This shows how it happened in real time.

Having returned from Stamford Bridge I sat down that night in the TV room at University to watch Match of the Day. Walked out before the highlights started. Couldn’t stomach it. I don’t think I could watch it now.

I went to watch the reserves play at the Lane that afternoon and there was a real sense of shock walking out of the ground. I would've been 10 so didn't really pick up too much on the anger around me or what it really meant though either.

In true United fashion we blew it. The writing was on the wall when we sold Deano that summer going into the season and didn't adequately replace him. He really had carried us for a couple of years.

Burnley v Hull was an amazing experience. Turf Moor was packed with fans of three teams, Burnley, Hull and Blades. I think there were more Blades in the ground than fans of either team that was actually playing. Never seen anything like it before or since. I don’t think it could even be possible now.

It was an incredible atmosphere…we were really nervous, particularly as Hull (Brian Marwood) scored early. They absolutely dominated the game, hitting the post a couple of times, having several goal line scirmishes and going close many, many times. How they didn’t score six or seven, I’ll never know. But they only scored one more and bizarrely, almost unbelievably we were promoted…our goal difference was identical, but we went up because we’d scored more goals, I think maybe just one more.

We couldn’t believe it. This couldn’t be happening. Joy was unconfined on the Blades end.
Still one of my most memorable nights as a Blade 👌👌

Out of curiosity I searched for who won the league in the last season before the prem started, and saw that we finished 9th that season (for context I’m 27 and my earliest season I remember is 2006/07)

I looked for the next few seasons how the blades did, until I reached the 1993/94 season, and the more I kept looking at the numbers of our relegation that year, the more I couldn’t quite believe I’ve not been told more about this season.

I’ve been told about the Everton cheating saga that season, but no one has ever mentioned to me that
1. Ipswich got a point away at 2nd placed Blackburn to stay up
2. Southampton got a 3-3 draw (I think they would’ve been safe anyway)
3. We fell to 2 late goals against Chelsea to lose 3-2
4. Everton came back from 2-0 down to beat Wimbledon is suspicious circumstances.

Ironically, my first season was the West Ham stuff, which had shades of this season in terms of cheating and 1st/2nd place teams not doing their jobs against our rivals, but this last day just seems insane!!!

I wondered (if not too painful) any blades could share what the feeling was on that day? The circumstances almost seem too ridiculous to assign normal disappointment to!
In Macro, watching on teletext in utter shock. Young un's won't have a clue what I am on about.

Aye
Often (correctly?) attributed to an Edwards (brave) header in an abject (3-1) defeat at Bolton on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon
Consensus was that we’d blown it as ‘ull were playing @ home later that day & were ‘nailed on’ to win but lost.
They then only drew on the following Saturday whilst we won to be 3 points & 2 goals ahead having completed our fixtures & them having their last game @ Turf Moor.
The ulcer birthed that week has been a constant ‘companion’ ever since.

I’d be interested to see if one of tge statto’s could confirm my suspicions that Everton have had more last day (or last two matches) escapes than any other team in PL history. And, how many were due to “shock” results.
Liverpool call them 'The turd that won't flush!'

I was at Chelsea, high up in what I think was there only decent stand, But Wigan in 07 felt a bigger wasted opportunity and Walsall in 81 was off the scale with the penalty drama at the end. And wasn’t there a full scale pitch invasion and fighting on the pitch after a 2-2 draw with Leicester in 1979 when we were relegated to the old division 3, although I seem to remember it was out of our own hands that evening anyhow.

Yeh like a good few on here I’ve had the full i went to the last game ups but def more downs experience watching our lot

Walsall ( H ) 81 - Relegated
Burnley Hull 84 - Promoted
Leicester ( A ) 90 - Promoted
Chelsea ( A ) 94 - Relegated
Palace 97 - POF - Lost
Wolves 03 - POF - Lost
Cardiff 06 - Promoted
Wigan 07- Relegated
Burnley 09 POF - Lost
Huddersfield 12 POF - Lost
Ipswich ( H) 20 - Promoted

And not to mention 5 play off semi final defeats didn’t go to the Yeovil , Swindon or Forest ones .. but went to Sunderland & Bristol City ⚔️

Went to the 2-2 home to Leicester in 79 but from I remember we were pretty much relegated anyway ⚔️

I remember watching football focus vidiprinter on BBC. I was 10.
I didn't understand what had happened. I knew we'd lost, but my older brother had to explain what relegation meant etc.

At that age there was no sadness or disappointment, i just put Emlyn Hughes International Soccer on, on the Commodore 64

We thought we’d fucked it in the last away game at Bolton in the 3-1 defeat , little did we know at the time how important would Edwards stooping headed consolation goal that resulted in him being stretchered off after being kicked in the head would be .
I went to Turf Moor along with about another 2k+ Blades to watch Burnley vs Hull game , by the time we got in 7:35 Hull were already 1-0 up through Marwood . Hull laid seige to the Burnley goal for 90 mins and went 2-0 ( needing to win 3-0 to get promoted ) and Roger Hansbury had an absolute blinder in goal for Burnley that night . I don’t think I’ve ever shit myself as much watching a game of football that didn’t involve my team & an Imodium extra family pack would have come in useful 😂 . It was the longest last 10 mins of a game I’ve ever known . I remember at the end all the Burnley fans ( that had run off from their Kop around onto the long side terrace ) coming over at the end & shaking hands with a lot of the Blades . We stopped off for a celebratory pint after , flagging off all the passing Hull coaches as they drive past … happy days ⚔️👍
I missed the first goal too! I went with Mrs Trig who was expecting Trig Jnr (TE) and I still claim that as his first football match though he wasn’t born until July.

Part way through the second half at 2-0 to Hull, I said to Mrs Trig something like “there’s half an hour left, can’t see Burnley holding out” and she’d just heard a Hull bloke behind say “half an hour left, we’ll never score” Happily, I was wrong and he was right.

It went downhill for Burnley after that and by 1987, they were struggling to stay in the Football League and only survived on the last day with a 2-1 win v Orient. Big crowd that day but they were as low as 1700 at one point.

Yeh they’d spent some money that season buying experienced old top flight players at the wrong end of their careers and were one of the favs for promotion pre season .. like you say Trigger they went into a proper downward spiral after that 👍

Remember it well. Listening on the radio and ceefax as the results came in. It was disappointing but I felt worse in 07. I was pretty sure we would bounce back quickly with Bassett in charge and a team who had equipped themselves well in the prem. probably how we would have felt if Wilder had still been in charge after our relegation in 21. I bought a season ticket pretty quickly afterwards as I was excited to see us get promoted as hadn’t been quite old enough to see the one in 90. Little did I know we wouldn’t bounce back for 12 years.

In fact, when was the last time we needed to get a result in the final game of a season to stay up and actually achieved it?
Every time I remember, we've lost and been relegated.
My first game May 1968 home to Chelsea. Had to win to stay in the 1st division. 1-0 up lost 2-1 and were relegated.Set the pattern for the rest of my time supporting.

Painful memories. Thanks for that.

I didn't go to Stamford Bridge, but can remember feeling safe as houses at half-time. Then, the house of cards just started falling. It was surreal and I must have sat staring at the floor for an hour. It hurt way more than Wigan. Against Wigan I was just angry that we didn't have the bottle to get a result and threw it away. It felt like we went down with a whimper, rather than a fight.

It has been painful being a blade at times, which is why we need to enjoy the current situation as much as possible. For some clubs, this is as good as it gets. Some teams go decades without a play-off, a promotion, a cup run....... nothing. We have had it all. In the immortal words of Ronan Keating "life is a rollercoaster, up the blades"

My apologies 😂

Ahh 94z My dad said I can’t be bothered with this shite again.

Said the same in 97

Said the same in 07

Same the same in 09

Said the same in 12

Said the same last season.

Still got his OAP season ticket.
Haha. The amount of times i have said "that's me done".... then buy a ticket for my 11th trip to Norwich.

Coventry had a number of amazing escapes until they were eventually relegated from the top tier in 2001.

In 1968 they survived their first season in the top tier by drawing at Southampton in the last day of the season and we were relegated after we lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea.

1969. The bottom of the first division looked like this when Coventry completed their fixtures that season

1734945088780.webp

Leicester won 2 and drew 1 of their next 4 fixtures but lost 3-2 their last game at Man U

1977 as explained in below link

1984
Beat Norwich in final day of the season to finish a point above Birmingham who drew at home to Soythampton

1985

Coventry had three more games left after Norwich had completed their fixtures. There was an 8 point gap between them and Coventry needed to win all their remaining games against Stoke, Luton and champions Everton

1734946204452.webp
Coventry won at Stoke, beat Luton at home then beat Everton 4-1 !

They remained a turd that wouldnt flush out of the top tier until 2001

I went to the Leicester match....we needed to win it 9-0.
I was only young and naively thought we had a chance ha ha. We ended up drawing 2-2.
Remember a Blade running on to the pitch from the John Street and punching the Leicster centre back in the face.

Regards your list.....all the wins ended up being irrelevant as our rivals ended up losing.
Also in some of those home games we only needed a draw but ended up losing to relegation rivals (Walsall and Wigan).

It's so typical that the only time a last match of season went on our favour.....we weren't even playing in it.
I was listening to the Burnley v Hull game on Radio Sheffield, it wasn't live but they kept having a reporter giving updates every 10 minutes
and I remember Hull being all over Burnley. They needed to win 3-0 and were unlucky not to achieve it, instead they only won 2-0.

Remember celebrating promotion, so excited at home and thinking it's not happened at a stadium, so we've missed out on a normal promotion.

I was in the car with my Dad at Crystal Peaks. Waiting for my Mum to finish shopping. We had it on the radio. I was 7 but out of everything you get up to as a kid this sticks in my memory. Must have been the enormity of the fuck up.

Other notable reasons we went down

The most catastrophic one, selling Deane
Then not adequately replacing him
Drawing to many games, we should have for example beaten Liverpool on boxing day
Not playing Blake when we signed him
Not parking the bus when we went 2 1 up at Stamford bridge
Drawing the Pigs at the Lane

remember all these games starting with the 1 - 2 loss to chelsea last game 68 we were 1 up and had enough chances that day to put the game to bed loads of wednesday fans mixed in with chelsea on the lane end ive already made my feelings known about the everton v wimbledon game on other threads one of the biggest fixed games in history

I had just come out of hospital after a major op. Kicking something on the floor when that last goal went in was not the most sensible thing I have ever done !!
However I am still here thanks to a wonderful doctor and nursing staff.
