We appointed Bryan Robson.

During our decline I have never moaned about Kevin McCabe because, at the time, I have agreed with every team manager appointment.

Except this one.

Every fan knew that this was wrong. We wanted someone like Robson with contacts at the top - but definitely not Robson. Its like when Newcastle appointed McClaren. You just knew it would end in tears.

The Robson appointment was the root cause of our decline IMO. Hopefully we are on the point of reversing this decline.

Totally and utterly agree.

An absolute disaster of an appointment that wasted and squandered the biggest budget we've ever had and couldn't even get himself sober for match day.

An absolute leech on football who I also think has a lot to answer for where we are today.

Captain Marvel-ous wanker.

This is the only time ever I vowed never to return to Bramall Lane until he had gone. Fortunately he was sacked before I had to carry out my threat.

We got that one so horrendously wrong. Even with the loss of Jagielka and CKR, I thought we were strongly placed to immediately bounce back, as teams have done since. I'd wanted McCall to get it. McCabe when interviewed said that he would of course be interviewed – next minute we had Robinson saying he wouldn't be interviewed because he hadn't had experience of leading a team following a relegation (or something like that).

Robson was already repeatedly-damaged goods, and completely ill-suited to make the best of the squad he'd inherit – it was plain to see, and was the first time as a fan that I was wholly opposed to it. I got behind him, but I hated the decision. It made we laugh when I saw the reaction to Wilson's appointment with the embarrassing car park demo – the case for Wilson at the very least could be made, even though he wasn't my first or second choice. Robson shouldn't have been anywhere near it. We stretched the wage bill in a way McCabe never did for Warnock, and which we should have done in January when other teams (eg Blackburn re: Stephen Warnock) pipped us for our targets.

It was a total unmitigated disaster. We were unlucky on the Tevez stuff the season before that we couldn't control – but McCabe was completely responsible for that idiotic piece of business that we had complete control over. That wasn't hindsight – I said it was dreadful at the time, as a great many did. The repercussions have been enormous.

Appointing Robson was utterly ridiculous but it's not the appointments that are always bad, it's what McCabe chooses to do with said appointments as in letting the shackles off with the wrong people. McCabes' decision making when it comes to football decisions is on the whole nothing short of atrocious.

I will never understand why we appointed the cunt - I was fucking furious, that fat bastard Robinson had an hand in it. Also Mcabe offered to give the Alcholic bastard a job when he sacked him.

That summer Chris Coleman was available and Mcabe said he'd not had a promotion experience so fucking what?

I can't recall any fucker been happy the time we appointed him.

This was the worst fucking decision ever and we are still paying for it to this day.

I remember posting at the time that I understood why McCabe did it. Robson had a second tier promotion on his CV (when backed with similar cash), and McCabe wanted a big name for his "international ambitions", whatever the hell they were.

Anyway, whilst I saw what McCabe's logic was, I was still horrified. Just because Gary Glitter made some records that kids enjoyed, doesn't mean you have him round babysitting.

I can't recall anyone on this forum that was in favour of Robson being appointed.

I honestly do not know what Kevin McCabe was smoking the day he thought Robson was a good idea. Then to give him such a huge amount of spending power was just football suicide.

Then somehow we managed to stabilize under Blackwell but McCabe managed to fuck that up by sacking Blackwell at the wrong time, even though Blackwell had offered his resignation after the Play Offs!

Apparently this is all just "bad luck" and some sort of curse according to Kev.

I'm getting angry again just thinking about the useless twat and his little folding table in the technical area for his glass of "water".

I know every manager since has had stick from the fans but I've never known anything like the Kop singing "United hate fucking Robson" for games on end. And the thing is he absolutely deserved it.

No matter how shit we were at times under Clough or Adkins, or even in the relegation season, it's never felt that bad again since to me.

McCabe's international interest at the time, and the appointment of Robson, could well have been the first cog set in motion to getting HRH on board (whether we consider that a positive thing or not). We all remember that undercover documentary about foreign investment starring Captain Marvel, right?

Didn't someone run down to the dugout from the south stand and throw their season ticket card at him?

God aye, I remember that! Proper furious, ran a fair way to get there and got cheered as they bundled him out of the ground

Funnily enough the only other managers that I can think of that have had season tickets thrown at them are McLaren and Pardew.

I've always thought the appointment of Robson was tied in with looking for a buyer for the club, which at the time was a channel 4 hoax -remember that shit?
I'd love to have a name as to who was behind that clever dick idea.

You mean this programme How to Buy a Football Club? Yeah Robbo was on it.

Right you are Pete. Robson and Kidd, what a total disaster they were. Employed beyond their capability to do the job. The fact that both went on to be given jobs for the boys at their former clubs gets right on my tits.

Did nothing but sign ageing players on the way down on massive wages. Gary Naysmith 30 grand a week.

What a fucking genius.

To be fair to Robson some of the signings he made were fine overall but he is a pisshead not a manager.

Blackwell got results with some of the players Robson signed.

They obviously weren't bad players, how could they be on money like that?

He was a complete moron for spending the budget as he did and McCabe was equally culpable for allowing him to do so. Especially as only two years later it would mean selling someone like Kyle Walker for a pittance in an attempt to balance the books.

All we had to do was sign the best players at Championship level (and, God forbid, the best from the league below) but we inexplicably felt an urge to go for the big names and pay them the big wages to show how big we are.

The biggest financial disaster in the history of the club. Makes Cloughie look like a storm in a teacup.

The biggest single reason we are where we are for me . I really don't think anyone at the club realised then or now just how much that appointment destroyed all the good work that had been done to the club in the previous years

Who knows where we would be now if we had appointed someone , almost anyone, else.

I knew we should have stuck with Warnock. But had we appointed any half decent Championship manager we'd have pissed the league that season - West Brom won it on about 80 points.

Sorry but the decisions at the top are where we are today.
Blackwell stopped the decline and if he was not the right man then the decision not to sack him after the play off is the main one. Not 3 games into a new season.
McCabe just started the decline again and continues to do so.
He will get it right because he will not let go till he does. Will he deserve praise- No the ones who deserve praise are the fans who have kept going through these crap seasons.
Robson may well have been bad but there is only one man responsible for this worst period in our history.
