I don't necessarily think that it does. I agree by pushing forward it makes the other team sit deeper however should they play on the counter and get in behind our midfield our current back 4 would be helpless. It seems to me that this is the decision NA as arrived at hence 'the wall' of 4 midfielders we currently have.

Also every time I see is trying to be more expansive it results on conceding lots more goals.

But I agree with your thoughts that we need to be more attacking but I think we need more than 1 player to be doing that given the players obvious limitations.

It's more about the threat that it offers. The opposition will be mindful of midfield players that can carry the ball and make good forward runs. They will start to deploy players to either mark them or occupy certain zones.

I take your point about counter attacking but if you get the balance right to push them back the other team will be far less inclined to push certain players forward on the break and it therefore dilutes any counter attacking play.

You can't win either way. You're just as likely to concede from giving the opposition too much territory and initiative as you are to an occasional counter attack.

There's a couple of phrases that are becoming very popular amongst fellow Blades and even our Nige has uttered the same things
"A win is a win" and "need to win ugly"
I agree with the sentiment, but they are just soundbites that just paper over the cracks.
The little run of results that straddled xmas was punctuated by the Bradford game, but in all the others we were awful.
People are puzzled why some fans are still grumbling (even after wins). Well the reason is they've never known a club "stumble" to promotion like many think United are destined to do.
