never mind S(front bottom)thorpe - we'll wipe the floor with them on Saturday - I'm more worried about Bristol Rovers next Tuesday. We owe them one for the Watney Cup final defeat in 1970 summat. (Bloody Ted Hemsley eh?). I'm feeling chipper and I reckon it will be 6 of the best!

Then someone can start another "when was the last time?" thread!

Got a feeling we will come flying out of the blocks. The fans are well up for it and confidence amongst players must be higher than its been in the last couple of years

Let's ask em shall we?

I struggle to come to terms with being worried about front bottom United.

That's what 6 years of this piss poor league does to you. You know we are going to lose games at this level but when you become worried about reasonably decent league one opposition it shows how low we've fallen. Onwards and upwards now IMO

We won 7 league matches in a row without conceding a single goal in 2014 under Clough.

It'll be decades before that feat is repeated.

I was enjoying reading this thread, now I feel down, off to the pub, that always makes the world seem better

Under Kendall, when Vonk and Ablett were the Centre-Backs, we conceded a ridiculously low number. I think something like 3 in 12 games?

Decent but Kendall never came close to 7 clean sheets in a row.

Neither did Warnock.

Vonk was a great no nonsense centre half. I remember when he did one of his many fouls, we'd say the opponent had been Vonked.

He was terrific. He and Ablett were rock solid in Kendall's first season. Ablett was only on loan though and left at the end of the season to join Birmingham. We then brought in David Holdsworth I think. Can't remember when Vonk left but he was replaced by Carl Tiler. Silent Blade will be able to fill in the detail.

I liked Vonk, solid and reliable. It was a shame Ablett didn't hang around, it was a great pairing. In fact Kendall never really got it right defensively after that. Couldn't seem to get it to knit together.

I remember Vonk being great. Then he got injured. Then he came back and managed to score an own goal, concede a penalty gift the opposition another goal and get sent off in the space of 2 games. I think he left not long after that.

Birmingham offered Ablett more money than we did in summer 1996 and our fans gave him a lot of stick during the 4-4 draw against Birmingham in the 2nd game of the 1996-97 season.

Vonk got sent off in the 2-1 defeat at Norwich in Dec 1997 (after Tiler left us) and I don't think he played many games after that due to injuries and he returned to Holland in 1998
