52 years ago today.....Leeds cup Q Final.

Went to this game. We caught a bus from Lane Top to Barnsley then another to Leeds. Sounds mad but it doesn't seem that long ago. We played very well that day but it wasn't to be.

I went to the match with my Dad and his season ticket mates. Although I was underage at the time we found a John Smith's pub and went in for a drink. They ordered four pints of Magnet and waited for them to be pulled. The barman produced four pint bottles of Magnet and put them on the bar. There were several backwards and forwards glances between the group and barman before my Dad said, 'No, DRAUGHT Magnet, not bottles' to which the barman replied, 'Never heard of it, all we have on draught is bitter.' I think they were surprised that being in the heartland of John Smith's territory they had never heard of draught Magnet. To this day I'm not sure if he barman was pissing up our backs or not.

"1968 my first away FA Cup tie and it was the heady heights of the quarter finals. Weeds away and thousands of Blades were on the motorway we went on the SUT. Big cheer goes up and the neighbours red and white estate car with a massive rosette on the back goes past. Old man says "bloody show offs". Little did I know four years later I would start dating the drivers niece and eventually end up marrying her. Lost 1-0 and Sprake did a swallow dive to pull a shot from behind the goal line."

I posted this on a previous thread about the FA Cup. We were stood on the side terracing which is their West Stand now. Most of Weeds supporters were congregated in the South and East Stands with a mixture on the West. The Kop, which was to become the Geldered End a month later when it was ripped out and rebuilt, was both Blades and Weeds fans. Blades had the top of the Kop and as a youngster I was fascinated watching the number of objects being thrown down at the Leeds fans during the game. Plenty of sporadic fighting after the game as we walked to the coach after a game we had deserved something out of.

Weeds and trouble were to feature in a number of games I attended in the next few years.
