Reminded me of Ben Davies. Turned out to be a good player for the Blades. He as a great dead ball specialist and brought lots of experience to the side we had then.

Any idea what happened to him?

At 1-0 down I went for a piss in the hope it would bring us an equaliser - I heard their second go in as I was doing up my zip. I returned to my seat to a volley of abuse from those around me. Then we scored three in five minutes and all was forgiven.

Didn't we score late penalty winners at Colchester two years running?

It's funny, I was talking football today with a friend I hadnt seen for a while and he said didn't Ben Davies play for Sheff U?

Turns out he works with Ben's missus in Hull. Ben has just retired at 37 having played for Grimsby. He is currently doing his A licence.

Really? I never felt like he fit in anywhere in particular as rather than playing in multiple positions, he didn't really play in any of them and his good set pieces were his only redeeming feature. He dropped to League 2 after leaving, had a couple of years at Pompey, a few at Grimsby, and now plays for Boston.

I wasn't suggesting he was indispensable, but as someone who, at that time, could cover a few positions, he brought experience for the times he was selected.

I remember turning off the latest scores after we went 2 down in the 77th minute.........what a team we had back then!o_O

Yes ,what a team indeed . Reading the team sheet sent a shudder down my spine and I know I'm in for a sleepless night .

Over the years , it's been my misfortune to have to put up with a number of totally shit Blades teams , but that one has to be up there with the shittiest of them all .

That team is truly fkin awful. Whay a team young Clough had assembled. Was it really only 4 years ago that we were turning out teams of that calibre?

I see Basham was the only one in the squad still here, and he was on the bench. Blimey, how could he not get a game in that team of stars...

Looking at that starting line up and there's no surprise we stayed in the PPL1 for 6 seasons?

He went to Pompey after us. They loved him. Same sort of graft (obviously limited skill) but he played his socks off for them, with Doyle in midfield and McNulty up front as well. Obviously, after their financial demise, 'decent' player purchases were rare so they had to make do with United's cast offs (after we'd wrung them dry)

Found it....

Brilliant that video, best bit was after we scored the penalty winner the players run over to the fans to celebrate, look at the 2 blokes who are just sat there motionless with long faces. Either pissed or Colchester fans on the wrong end.

Skoogs came on and turned the game. If any of you fellas have played for a very good team and also for a very shit team you'll understand how very different a decent player can be when plying his trade in a shit team.......

I remember Scougall coming on and being absolutely brilliant in that game . Had high hopes for him after his performances the season before but he had started this one really poor. I thought this was going to be him back to his best but sadly he never recaptured his early form.
