January 1997 in FA Cup at Carrow Road. I was sat behind the goal with my Norwich mate. Patterson takes corner, a group of players head it towards the goal but a Norwich defender clears the ball off the line and onto the bar, then a mad scramble follows ending with Holdsworth sliding the ball towards the goal, keeper Gunn blocks it but Holdsworth knocks the rebound to the inside the post leaving for Katchouro to blast his open chance against the underside of the bar before Gunn grabs the ball safely onto his chest! Norwich won the game with a John Polston goal

Once went in the Cup in Deane and Agana's heydays when we were on the way up the leagues. Norwich were 1st Division at the time. We played them off the park and lost 3-2 I think. Brilliant day, great perfprmance, great support, lost as usual when the big crowd turns up.

I cried after that game. The Green'un headline was "Brave Blades". I wasn't.

We still have that goal scoring problem now.

Biggest disappointment at Carrow Road was Delia's deluxe pies.

I like a good pie me and paid the extra 20 p or so to have the supposedly superior steak and local ale (Wherry?) pie.

It was a right rip off, tasted no better than a standard pie and was more hot air than meat (is that why it was called a Delia pie?)

I think we drew 1 - 1 or maybe lost one nil. Either way, football was far less memorable than the pie and that for all the wrong reasons.

Guess that's why she's a millionaire...

Fantastic stuff, typically a scramble like that ends up in favour of the opposition

As soon as I saw the thread title Silent Blade I knew it would be the Norwich game.

Who has the scuffed left foot shot from the edge of the area that leads to Holdsworth's chances? Is it Chris Short?
Will look when I get home after work. I remember Short was out of the team due to a stomach problem around that time

OK if we/re testing memories, anybody remember the Norwich 6th round game at BDTBL in the 50's. We drew and lost the replay.

My memory recalls a foggy night ? ( but may have been before the first floodlights which I also remember) and we drew. Whatever year it was I was under 10 and it must have been the biggest away support I had ever seen. There were 57000 in that day.I remember their bank of supporters, all in yellow of course, and to this day I remember the words to their song " On the ball City, never mind the danger. Carry on, now's your chance, hooray its a goa...al" Thinking back, that's how simple and innocent football songs were then. We all sang "Ilkley Moor bar Tat" in those days, that's why I always know the words to that as well!

Can't tell you how much pleasure that has given me, thank you so much. I was 11. See the crowd right round the cricket pitch. Great to see Willie Hamilton again. Is there a subscription for this stuff with British Pathe.?

I remember Fennoughty, Tom and his brother. Not my favourites but pure footballers, intelligent and obvious gentlemen.

"Brave Blades" personally i get sick of reading fuckin patronising star quotes...................what about victorious blades for once ! anyone else have any suggestions ?

First floodlights at BDTBL was in 1954, they remained there until being replaced by bigger and better ones in 1961-62 season

Usually, but not always. One of my favourite United goals of all time is the scruffy one Brian Deane scored in the 1990 promotion clincher at Leicester which was a similar scenario and seemed to last for 15-20 seconds. I was in the upper stand behind that goal and we must have oohed and aahed four or five times at near-misses before Deano joyfully forced the ball home. It was in the middle of a surreal few minutes in which everything you'd dreamed of the previous night actually came true before your very eyes and the afternoon as a whole remains one of the best ever in all my Blades-supporting days.

Not a problem, WWF. Glad to help.

I never met Tom Fenoughty. Remember him as a player, though. He'd been to the same school as my dad, De La Salle College, on Scott Road at Pitsmoor. I ended up there myself from 1971-1976.

I met and played with two of his brothers, Mick and Nick, in later life. Both had played for Matlock Town, as did Tom. Both very good footballers themselves and, equally importantly, good lads.

Can't watch the video clip while I'm at work so apologies if I'm repeating what is on there, but those misses against Norwich are featured on one of Nick Hancock's videos in which he says 'Sheffield United have four bites at the world's largest cherry' I think.

We got the rough end of the deal on those tapes. Off hand I can remember: The Norwich misses, a Pembo own goal, Alan Kelly attempting to dribble around Lee Hughes and Brian Gayle gift-wrapping Leeds the title. Nowt in our favour though.

Just looked up Complete Records, it was Mark Beard. Chris Short's comeback was in the league match at home to Norwich 5 weeks later. I remember him gasping for breath a few times after making his usual overlaps and at one point he was really struggling for breath but the Blades backroom staff ignored him and carried on watching the game. I was worried that he might have collapsed at anytime! We lost 3-2, Alan Kelly got injured and Roger Nilsen replaced him. The late David Rocastle was playing for Norwich in that match

Any One remember FA cup 6th round 3-1 win at Newcastle. 1961..
We beat Everton away 1-0 in the 3rd round Billy Russel scored all 4 goals

Thanks Silent, good shout. I had totally forgotton about Cgris Short being out of breath on his comeback but totally remember that now. A shame he got injured, him and Mitch Ward had a great partnership and he overlapped similar to Brayford.

Pretty certain that Norwich match was on the telly at a time when we were rarely on so it was quite a novelty still. Sure I watched it back a few times.

Russel also scored 2 in the 3-1 4th round win over Lincoln city and 1 in the 5th round win over Blackburn rovers at the lane..
