Yawn.
Not really slagging the club off. And 're emerged' would imply that I ever disappeared... forgot we weren't allowed an opinion on a player. If you think Hanson is good enough fair enough - I'm happy enough to revisit this in January when we all decide he isn't good enough.
He was a good but short sighted signing for league one for me. End of story as far as I'm concerned.
Normally agree with many of your posts.
I know what you mean about Hanson but it's not a fair reflection.
I remember the Fleetwood home match and their tactics showed a clear blueprint how to best us everytime.
Defend really deep with big men in the middle.
Defending deep means they deny space for Duffy and co to play their smart though balls.
Big physical defenders will make mincemeat of Sharp, Lavery and Clarke (who was surprisingly lightweight in early months). The tactic was don't worry about us having plenty of the ball but break positively at speed in numbers. Fleetwood beat us 2-0 but it could easily have been a deserved 3-0.
I left that match concerned because a team had found our weakness of no pace or physicality up top.
Then we sign Hanson and all of a sudden our weakness has gone.
Teams can sit back and park the bus but sooner or later Hanson will force a mistake.
Also EEL height and physicality was a vital component of our defence. When he was dropped I noticed that it was Hanson dropping deep defending corners and free kicks (he was the reason we didn't miss EEL).
Basically I agree Hansons lack ability but he WAS really effective when teams defended deep in numbers (which many did in league 1) and he helped us win promotion. He's a great joker in the pack (a tactical option) that you can bring on to ruffle some feathers when teams sit back hoping to frustrate us. Also if we're having an off day where nothing is working we go back to basics and bring on Hanson playing it long.
