Knowing what we know now i would say Matty Taylor, before this season probably Leon due to experience and his tally. In hindsight he has not been good enough so far but when we signed him we all thought he would do a job. Taylor might flop at brizzle city.

I'm confused were we offered Taylor for £300k but we said 'no we got Clarke'

Clarke's fee was less of a problem than his wages + 3 year contract have become.

why do people start threads about players CW didnt bother chasing in a we shudda as Clarkes been disappointing sort of way

Clarkes stats show he should be the better choice

might still be , but feel free to write him off as usual, its the blades way

since the season turned around after the first 4 games
clarke has played in 12 league games of which weve won 9 and drawn 1

dont count cup games as we played seriously weakened teams

and we get Leon Clarke not Marty Taylor who would u choose ?

What a stupid question?

During the Summer anyone with half a brain would have chosen Clarke.
He was tried and tested where as Taylor would have been a big risk.
Taylor has spent almost all his career in the non league.
Imagine the melt down on here in the Summer choosing Taylor instead of Clarke.
But in restrospect of course Taylor looks better but that's only because Clarke hasn't delivered yet.
Clarke could go to another league 1 club and suddenly be their star player, he's well capable.

We needed to show ambition in the Summer and bring in a proven scorer to back up Sharp, not taking risks on players who have never played in league 1. Hence went for Clarke.

Maybe true about the wages, just goes to show, you get what you pay for, and we've ended up with a wank stain.

My guess would be this clause in Matty Taylor's contract was only for teams in higher divisions, otherwise I've no doubt Charlton or someone would have snapped him up

If you ignore all the games we've either lost or drawn, we've got a 100% record this season!

Are you for real?

Check their records?
Taylors is a joke in comparison to Clarke

Are you saying that Sheff Utd should take risks and adopt a policy of buying the best players from the non league?

Thought 99% of Blades had decided we need to buy players for the here and now.
So we look went for a policy of mopping up all the best players in league 1.
Players that know the division and have proven records.

In the Summer Taylor didn't have a proven record and we needed to show ambition, hence Clarke was chosen above Taylor, which was the right choice at the time.

No one has a crystal ball but you have to appreciate that if a club wants the best chance then they shorten the odds and go for the tried and tested.

Clarke was great in league 1 as recently as last season.

I go on actual stats
those are the league games clarkes started / played in since the last week in august, nothing massaged or selected out of context

if it doesnt back up a theory hes a jinx , well cant help

only league games matter
Ive edited out cup games , where hes scored, but as I stated these were not representative as we played reserve teams

Don't ever change BTL :D

clarke can only play in games hes selected for cant he

those are the games hes played in
we suffered 2 defeats in those games , one v walsall was freakish as we shouldnt have lost
didnt sharp miss a penalty

yet clarkes the scapegoat
its baffling at times how some players are chosen as reasons for failure
we just cant seem to help looking for faults , in minute detail

and I dont think Clarke was the reason we lost 4-1 at walsall
defenders were totally at fault

we lost out on Omar Bogle big time
mind you we didnt chase him either
lets start another 100 threads about players we didnt chase

Le Fondre perhaps ,the 4 goals in the last 2 years superstar we missed out on

... but we'll ignore the games he started in August that we lost and saw him lose his place because it makes our argument look daft

At the start of the season I would have taken Clarke every time, more worrying is that both are journeymen and not the kind of signings we should be making.

well it was a different team then , wed all like to forget the start
then long in goal brayford hammond

Itook it from the proper season start , our first win

The thing with Boggle and Marty Taylor last year is that they are BIG risks.

Many players from the non league move up a few divisions and struggle badly.
If we were desperate (like Wigan) or had plenty of money to spare then I think we'd target the cream from the lower divisions

BUT at present we just need to get out of this division.
Hence this seasons policy of buying PROVEN excellent players at league 1 level Hussey, Fleck and Clarke. In previous years we've tended to go for Championship rejects hoping they'll impress when moving down a level to league 1.

Le Fondre is an interesting one.
I thing he has similarities playing style to Sharp.
In that he's not tall /physical, has no pace and won't create his own chances.
Le Fondre needs setting up then he's a great finisher.
But will Boltons physical style suit him and now that Zak Clough has left they may lack the creativity to create enough chances for Le Fondre.

Apart from I never mentioned Taylor?
Not really bothered about Taylor eather to be honest.
Oh and to answer the question, yes in for real, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!
Clarkes follows in the footsteps of Higdon and Hammond, absolute disappointment!

So what's your next argument??

all players are punts
risks
some soar , some are ok some just dont fit
even alex ferguson bought some donkeys, when you deal at our level not all will be sparkling diamonds
there will be the odd glass bead

Yeah, it was a different team - Leon Clarke was one of the differences!

And Hammond? This season? Getting your years mixed up a little?

meant hussey but was reading about hammond on another site

but since sept hes been in just 2 league defeats Clarke and as I said wasnt culpable for either
shows how some players arent given the benifit

I'm not sure if we could've got Taylor for 300k. If we could it's shocking if we didn't try to sign him, but the same could be said for many other clubs. Maybe the clause only applied to teams from the Championship. Either way it was an absolute shithouse move from him and his agent because it's below the minimum he could've been worth. If you're going to show loyalty, show loyalty. Don't sign a new contract knowing the club are going to be screwed over at some point.

No one is telling me Clarke made more sense than Taylor if he would've only cost 300k. There was never any doubt that he'd do well in L1, he was fantastic for Bristol Rovers in L2 last season and was scoring in every game in the second half of the season. He was on fire. The most impressive striker in L2 for quite a while. And as it turns out he couldn't have been any less suitable alongside Sharp than Clarke - and that's possibly a key reason we didn't pursue him. On paper Sharp and Taylor are a bit too similar.

Obviously, I've been following this football thing for a few years now, I've picked up a few snippets of how it works and I think I have a basic understanding of it now, even down to, if we put that round thing into that white rectangular thing with the net on, more than the other group in different coloured shirts, we should win. Thats about right isn't it??

Pointing out the obvious doesn't always help, but I can't understand anyone that doesn't think Clarke is a total disappointment and, for want of a better word, shite!
Now there's taking a punt on a player with a decent record in this division, granted, but a 3 year contract at his age, and the fact he and Sharp have had issues in the past and obviously can't play together, means we're paying 100% more than he's worth in my eyes.
He'd be better out on loan, but, with his current form and, what seems to be an affliction to injuries, we're stuck with him.
I really do hope Hanson is the answer, because what with Done, Mcnulty, and Clarke being next to useless, we're going to need abit of luck.
