or so the line goes in the song "Three Lions on my Shirt".

More like 46 years of hurt now for England fans.

I heard that on the radio yesterday and it got me thinking, how many years of hurt for Blades and when would the years of hurt start.

I've been looking at our cluhonours list on the OS and several dates stand out as posssibilities I guess.

1889 - obvious! That's when we were founded and it's been all downhill from there hasn't it?

No, the early years were pretty good actually and I remember when I was a nipper in the 50s my grandad telling me all the names of the players in the four Cup Finals we won. He was in his 70s then so was able to mix stories of the Blades, 'Fatty Foulkes', the Mooney Gang and Shillito at will! No wonder I became fascinated. I was fascinated by his accent as well; my parents sent me to Mylnhurst (where Warnock sent his kids) and I had elocution lessons so when my grandad would say things like "put sum coil on t'fire" I wouldn't have a clue what he was talking about. I had elocution lessons you see. One day I distinctly remember asking him if he was English! lol But my love of the Blades started then at his knee.

So not 1889 as we've won a few things since then.

1936 - FA Cup Final 1-0 defeat to the Arsenal when Jock Dodds hit the crossbar. Yes big match defeat at a neutral venue and no goal scored. Familiar or what? But we have won something since then.

1950 - pipped to a promotion place by .008 of a goal (average in those days) by our neighbours in S6. But we've won something since then.

1961 - another semi-final heart ache when we play Leicester City 3 times drawing 0-0 twice and the losing 2-0 .

But we've something since then. (Am I beginning to sound a bit ChrisTarrant now? ;) )

1971-1972 season - after a cracking start when we head the table until a certain match at Old Trafford, we slump to 10th

But dah-de-dah-de-dah...

1974-1975 season - we miss out on a place in Europe where oral tradition states we needed to beat Birmingham away in the last match to secure a place. We drew 0-0 and I remember that night as the night my much loved red Triumph Herald (literally) blew a gasket on the way there and on the way back I took the wrong turn up the M6 (never been on it before then) and finished up going to Manchester and across the Snake pass to get home! We finished 6th but it seemed so close at the time.

But we, but not much....

1980-1981 season. Now I don't recall this but according to the OS excellent year by year history we started the season at the top of the table but then of course we went into the 4th Division for the first and only time in out history

But we, and it was the next season, and that was it, apart from the occasional runners-up spot.

1993 the season we went to Wembley with the pork in the FA Cup Semi Final - at least we scored.

But we won something - er no we didn't. So did the years of hurt start here for most people?

1993-1994 season - relegated from the Premier League by a bizarre series of results that had us safe until you know what, allegedly!

1997 - Play Off Final at Wembley to get back to the Premiership versus Palarse - lost 1-0

1998 - FA Cup Semi-Final at Old Trafford versus Newcastle - lost 1-0, again

2002-2003 - surely this had to be the year we did it! Well did something, like score at a neutral venue maybe? No

FA Cup Semi-Final at Old Trafford - lost 1-0 (ho-hum) and denied by a referee that got too close to Michael Tonge, and one of the best saves of all time!

Worthington Cup Semi-final versus Liverpool over two legs. At least we won the home leg but the away leg was marred by the trashing of the Arkle by Liverpool idiots.

Play Off Final (Premiership here we come, again) versus Wolves at the Millenium. Surely now was our time! Third time lucky! Well there was a three in it. Lost 3-0

2007 - last match in the Premiership season and shades of 1981 and 1994 sees us relegated on the last day versus Wigan and this lead on to Tevezgate as we all know

2009 and another Premiership Play Off Final at Wembley and ooh! Guess what? We lose to Burnley by, oh, yes, 1-0! Nil - again!

So, when did the years of hurt start for you?

For me it was the 1993 Semi Final versus dear old crackling! 19 years -couldn't be 20 could it, or 25?

19 years so we can't say, what an anniversary and, what a great chance to end the years of hurt.

Maybe it's best that way!

;)

You've missed out 1968 when we were relegated from the top flight. On the last day of the season. Again.:(

Bizarrely (or is it 'cos I'm a bloody Jonah) I was at every one of these matches (including both legs against Liverpool, home to Walsall etc.) and I'll be at Wemberlee on Saturday (unless somebody pays me £1k to stay away...). Will Saturday be different to the catalogue of failures? I think it will be very even and I'm pinning my hopes on our bad luck running out. First Ched. Then BT. Then Hoskins. Maybe McD on Saturday. The run of foul luck that - whatever they may claim - saw our beloved neighbours sneak above us. With a team of loanees. After fiddling HMRC and screwing their suppliers.

But it's football, innit? Just think, for Chelsea it's all downhill from now on. They will never scale the same heights as last Saturday again, some much-loved players are on the way out, they'll miss out on Hazard and the managerial situation remains farcical.

But their new-found 'fans' will bellyache when it happens. Because their fans have never known true hurt.

The kind of hurt only United can offer.

our song line is
nothing else but hurt

and somehow I cant feel any sympathy for Chelseas bleak future
as Abramovich wants 4 more cl wins and will start spending another 500 million
yeah nothing but dull times for them ahead

Great posts, reading back you dont realise how much hurt there was, you tend to try and block it all out and forget it. Agree that the 1993 Semi final loss for me is when the pain started....... I have my morphene ready for Saturday!

The hurt starts the day you become a blade. Its an unwritten rule.
WOULDNT HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY

I was thinking about this on the way to work 93 is she it all started to turn to shit for me , ever since Alan corks goal ward effort trickled over the line and into the goal ever since the loudest chant I've ever heard in my life filled wembley stadium and blades hearts with hope and dreams of what may be
Yeah ever since then although I've always loved being a blade this big game shit is just getting boring now , time to bury it blades

Of course and thanks for pointing that out. Can't edit my post for some reason. Willie Carlin seemed to be the only player that day that gave a flying.... about trying to win the game and we lost some games 3-2 after being aheasd didn't we?

That was a cracking season in many ways. We beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on Good Friday (see elsewhere for the story of my lift back on the team coach after the match) and Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor when Turf Moor was also a fortress. We got to the 6th round of ther FA Cup losing at Bellend Road to Weeds and Colin Addison had a shot that must have rebounded onto every bit of the woodwork before coming back into play (well seemed like every bit of the woodwork at the time)

The London trips were ace that year for an 18 year old lad...

The 2-3 game was v Fulham on 23/4/68. Woodward and Fenoughty put us 2-0 up before we collapsed.

It was our crap home record towards the end of that season that did for us. After beating Spurs 3-2 on Currie's debut on 26/2/68, we only took 1 point from our 6 remaining home games, whilst we took 8 points (2 points for a win then) from the 7 away games left including that 2-1 win at Anfield.

heh.. yeah me an'all .. sounds like our grandfathers were similar except mine used to go on about the 'tank gang' (mooney gang rivals).. we 'did' win in 1925 you know.. apparently my great grandfather went to that one :D 'used to put a newspaper in his coat across the shoulders so he didn't get wet'.. err.. apparently :)
i've given up on us ever winning anything.. it's all about the craic
edit: when did it all go wrong for me.. watneys cup final circa 72.. i was about six or something.. we lost on pens i think

You might want to skip to 7:08...

No hurt, yes defeat is disapointing and lives with you for ever but it's been a great ride since the early 90's. We might have lost most things but it's been great as well.

As a club that generally hangs around 1st/2nd divisions I don't think we do too bad. *0's were shite but the 70's were good, not done too bad during my time.

Thanks for the memories SUFC, can't beat being a Blade.
I don't expect to win anything major but cup semis, play offs, can't beat these days.

Best day was Ipswich away when we won a trip to Wembley, the tears flowed. Thats what it's all about.

I remember that sound - it was like something out Lord of the Rings...

doesnt matter how many times u watch that 2nd Owls goal, there's no excuse. totally unmarked, no man on the near post. even i wud have scored that.

broke my 9 year old heart sat behind the goal at the other end it did.

We've never been the same since TC was sold.
Selling Mick Jones was a mistake, selling TC was a crime
Same owd pisspot United.....soon as sumone shows a bit of class ....sell....sell....sell.

Deane was marking him, but moved towards the ball as it came over (presumably aiming to head it clear). Unfortunately, he totally misjudged it, leaving Bright with the free header.

It first went wrong for me at the relegation playoff in '88
Away to bristol City we lost and the home display was awful to watch. But I was young enough for the optimism to take over.
Plus the next season was the start of the good times watching Utd
Deane, Agana,Bryson etc Not always the best to watch but fantastic all the same.
For giving me those good years as a late teenager/early twentysomething is something I will thank Dave Bassett for forever.

Looking back it was the 93 semi, where at halftime we tore the roof off after Corky's goal, it is the date that the hurt really got to me first.
Was gutted that we lost a semi, although glad to of gone to Wembley to see my team, but sick that we lost to those bastards.

And here we are 19 years later, back down south for a third division promotion decider, after a fair few other piss poor attempts at going up this way.

19 years since Corky's facial hair and goal, 19 years since we let off flares and passed them round Wembley.
19 years since I stood up to leave at 90 mins relieved that we hadn't lost(fucking didn't realise there was extra time)
19 years since I thought can't get any worse than that feeling.

But it's Sheff Utd isn't it??!!!

Weirdly for the 1st time since then I have a good feeling about this. I have always felt we could lose at ALL the other attempts.

I suspect we will score on Satdi but will we still feck it up?? Play well and score but still bloody lose??

I will know in 3 days time

It's never easy being a Blade but Iam looking forward to seeing my mates, my fellow Blades and the team grace the hallowed turf.

1975/76 was the first season I went to just about every home game, missing only our wins against Burnley and Aston Villa, therefore meaning that when I did finally see us win that season, we were already down - a pretty good grounding for what was to follow I'd say.

Wouldn't have it any other way though...

Agreed, hurt and grabbing disappointment from the jaws of success are the norm....makes any good times all the sweeter mind

I replied in that vein to a Citeh fan today who'd emailed me good luck for Satdi that surely they've got a really big fall coming now.

Think people have forgotten about the Watney Cup. We lost that final too.
We had a cricketer called Ted Hemsley taking the last pen. I'd have him as our left back today though.

How did that team not walk that game? Didn't turn up I guess;)

Ted played for either Warwickshire or Worcestershire - latter I think- and can still be seen at the Lane in the Platinum Suite occasionally.

Where was the game played?

Did he not also play for Derbyshire? Not that I know much about cricket. I thinkm I was told he has or had a pub towards Chesterfield or is that Len Badger

Len Badger definitely has a pub. When I saw Ted in the Platinum Suite he still looked fit and slim so, no - can't be running a pub lol

54 years of hurt for me, watched my first game in 1958..... However Saturday for whatwever reason was the lowest I have felt, even lower than the relegations. I can't explain it, but I am still really numb from Saturday, this one really does hurt............I thought the others did, but not a patch on this one.

I'm a few years behind you. 70 for me.
It maybe because this is similar to 1979/1980 feeling. For me Burnley was worse because the whole club including us as fans was crap.
At least we have something to build on and as fans now we don't automatically think we have the right.
Although the novelty will wear off about these smaller grounds to visit if we get stuck, we won't. We do have these grounds to look forward to. Try to pick yourself up. After 09 I thought we'd never get the chance of a play off final again and although we did not get the result this time either, I now have a strange optimism that staying down could be the best long term thing.
