Perhaps me just overthinking things here.. Or perhaps with the results of late and out inability to break teams down at times, a massive part of me would be option to alternative options in regards to shape and style of play. In recent weeks I just think we have been sussed out and stifled a bit in games, where key players have found themselves marked out of the game and ineffective?
Contrary to the title of this thread and contrary to my opening paragraph above, I don't think we should scrap the formation completely. Up until recent weeks, we have been pretty well drilled in our trademark formation and we have achieved a great deal of success in the process. I think it would be somewhat of a bum move if we moved away from it full stop, when it has been so fruitful in the past.....
But do we need to mix it up a bit?.....
And is this what Wilder is doing in his recent signings?
Many might argue that Wilder is simply continuing his trend in ensuring that we have competition for every single position on the pitch?
But then we have the arrival of Ricky Holmes, a player who Wilder previously utilised in a wider position for Northampton...Incidentally the position in which he is renowned as most dangerous. A great deal of his assists have come from his runs down the flanks and balls into the box and he has the natural ability to switch wings and play on both, despite mainly playing on the left.
Now we are rumoured with a couple of other wingers, the most notable being Adam Forshaw of Middlesborough. He can be played in a central position as with Holmes, however again he is another player who can play out wide on the right wing.
Finally.... Carter Vickers has been allowed to return to Spurs? Ok Leonard has arrived and he brings the flexibility of being able to play CB as well, we also have this young trialist from Manchester United who can also be deployed at CB or defensive midfield. BUT..... Is this just another hint that Wilder may be open to the idea of playing just two central defenders in a flat back four?
Should we expect that four at the back?
Perhaps 4-3-3 or even the standard 4-4-2 at times?
Is Wilder just recruiting to strengthen is trusty 3-5-2?... To bring more options to the table.....
One thing is for certain though.....If indeed Wilder is looking at the possibility of that flat back four, surely we would expect to see another full back come into the fold? Are Stevens and Lafferty enough?
Opines welcome.....
