Perhaps me just overthinking things here.. Or perhaps with the results of late and out inability to break teams down at times, a massive part of me would be option to alternative options in regards to shape and style of play. In recent weeks I just think we have been sussed out and stifled a bit in games, where key players have found themselves marked out of the game and ineffective?

Contrary to the title of this thread and contrary to my opening paragraph above, I don't think we should scrap the formation completely. Up until recent weeks, we have been pretty well drilled in our trademark formation and we have achieved a great deal of success in the process. I think it would be somewhat of a bum move if we moved away from it full stop, when it has been so fruitful in the past.....

But do we need to mix it up a bit?.....

And is this what Wilder is doing in his recent signings?

Many might argue that Wilder is simply continuing his trend in ensuring that we have competition for every single position on the pitch?

But then we have the arrival of Ricky Holmes, a player who Wilder previously utilised in a wider position for Northampton...Incidentally the position in which he is renowned as most dangerous. A great deal of his assists have come from his runs down the flanks and balls into the box and he has the natural ability to switch wings and play on both, despite mainly playing on the left.

Now we are rumoured with a couple of other wingers, the most notable being Adam Forshaw of Middlesborough. He can be played in a central position as with Holmes, however again he is another player who can play out wide on the right wing.

Finally.... Carter Vickers has been allowed to return to Spurs? Ok Leonard has arrived and he brings the flexibility of being able to play CB as well, we also have this young trialist from Manchester United who can also be deployed at CB or defensive midfield. BUT..... Is this just another hint that Wilder may be open to the idea of playing just two central defenders in a flat back four?

Should we expect that four at the back?

Perhaps 4-3-3 or even the standard 4-4-2 at times?

Is Wilder just recruiting to strengthen is trusty 3-5-2?... To bring more options to the table.....

One thing is for certain though.....If indeed Wilder is looking at the possibility of that flat back four, surely we would expect to see another full back come into the fold? Are Stevens and Lafferty enough?

Opines welcome.....

you're over thinking things. ;)

Maybe so but the signings coming in and the signings still rumoured, still offer the versatility to play differently.... Whilst Holmes can play in a more compact formation, he is also a highly talented and quite lethal wide man.

He said in his interview his competition was Duffy.

Being able to change formation in game without just putting more strikers on would be a good thing. 2 2 2 4 rarely works!

More talent coming in = more options. Don't think the base philosophy will change but I like the new players skill sets for bringing a bit of variety to our attacking play

The cup has come at a great time for us, he'll either put it somewhat out of his mind and put out a similar team to Ipswich in the regular formation and devote his time to working in the gap on new stuff on the training pitch, or he'll try a new formation in the cup with all the new lads since we've got a somewhat unimportant game against decent opposition to test stuff on.

Hopefully we can do something at Norwich though in the meantime.

The obsession with 442 is insane on here

When did I suggest that we revert to a 4-4-2? I called it as a potential alternative, along with 4-3-3 or pretty much whatever you want to play with a flat back four and wide men....

Unfortunately all the new signings bar Wilson are cup tied. Real pain in the arse that. Especially as we've got Wolves away 3 days later.

"I don't think we should scrap the formation completely."

Nor me, but we should be willing to tweak it, as we have done (maybe when necessity dictated, as at the Sty).

Having an extra midfielder in, with either Lundstram or Lee Evans "sitting" and with Fleck licensed to play more of a box-to-box role alongside the dynamic Leonard, would often suit away from home IMO. Yes, we'd lose one man up top (or the no.10 "link player"), but we'd have bodies arriving in the box. And we'd lure opposition defensive players into central areas, hopefully enabling better chances of overloads out wide.

Or we could use the 3-4-3 so common in the premier league now (as, I think, we made use of once Duffy had come on at Swillsboro), keeping the central midfield two as they are with the wingbacks outside. But with two "inside forwards" (any two from Brooks/Duffy/Holmes) behind the no.9.

Hopefully we'll keep the 3-5-2 as the "template" but maybe just amending it in ways such as these as circumstances warrant.

With the plethora of forwards we've now got (especially with Ched Evans soon to return, & with Wilson looking pretty intriguing despite failing to make much of an impact), I'd imagine we'll continue playing two up top most of the time. Maybe this itself will lead to a return to 4 at the back at times?

Sheeeit. The former then, let Knilly take the lead against PNE and Wilder can go to his fortress of solitude and work his tactical magic.

Oh and we won't even have CCV now either. So fuck knows how to approach that game. We want to be as strong as possible whilst playing as few who'll start v Wolves as possible. It would be good if Brooks could start but if not I'd go with something like this...

Blackman
Heneghan Stearman Wright
Baldock Lundstram Fleck Thomas
Carruthers
Sharp Wilson

If Wilder allows the deals to go through, there is still a bit of interest in Heneghan and Thomas....So may have even less options.

We'd be daft to loan those two out before the FA Cup game, where they should both be in the squad.

Wilder is still in the sniff for one more apparently? And if the loans of these two are going to facilitate this new arrival wages wise?

Where have you heard that? Has Wilder said so?

After the arrival of the trio last week, Wilder said he was still talking to a couple of targets. The discussion then moved on to what was happening with Ricky Holmes, in which he clarified that there was some truth in that deal.

Maybe Ched and Freeman will play in that, I've heard today from someone that Carruthers is off to Bury though, not sure where that came from but whether it's Bury or otherwise I think Samir is off

Probably stick a few yoofs on, give Slater another run out, it'd be great if Brooksy got back for it though as you say.

Said this on another post.

6th in table
3rd highest goal scorers

New players arriving attacking football.

Please close thread.

One thing I have noticed is that although when we play 3-5-2, it does mean that we are using every bit of space on the pitch as much as possible however I also feel like this has a negative impact on our wing backs.

I've noticed that Stevens if nearly ALWAYS wide literally stood on the line. I think this prevents what he can do which is run past players and also play more direct balls up to the strikers.

Here is an awful- quickly made diagram of what I mean.

Brown indicates where Stevens passes nearly ALWAYS end up going to.

Because of Stevens being pushed out so far wide, and a defender blocking any type of attacking run by Stevens/ball up top, it then means Stevens either has to pass sideways or pass it back to a defender. IMO this slows down our attacking play.

Playing Wide can be a huge benefit but it can also have negatives, and in the past 5 matches at least, i've seen far too much of this

The difference isn't about shape or being figured out. For some reason, we've slowed down our passing. Earlier in the season, we played some nice on-touch stuff, which really allowed the overlapping centre backs to hit teams quickly and get balls into the box. Our style recently has been the same shape and direction, but at about half the speed. You can see O'Connell and Basham's overlaps a mile off now, as we slowly work the ball across the midfield.

It's probably down to confidence (see "momentum"), and we'll get it back.
