2000 league wins!

I hope that this is correct but it doesn’t feel like it is. I can’t imagine that many Blades would think that we are the 6th most successful team since the league began, let alone non-Blades.
 
Those stats don't surprise me.

A negative of being a Blade
United have the unwanted claim to fame as being the biggest club to have not been in a single cup final since the war, last cup final was 1936.

A positive of being a Blade
We've spent 67 seasons outside the top flight, mostly in the 2nd tier
We have a great record (obviously one of the best if not the best) at being involved in promotion challenges, we've finished in the top 10 on 42 out of 67 seasons.

So being a Blade, when not in the top flight, roughly 66% of the time (2 in every 3 seasons) we are up there challenging for promotion.

Compare this to Coventry City, About 10 years ago I worked with an Agency worker from Coventry who was a Coventry City fan.
Nice guy but told him the truth that I thought Coventry City were a bland club and apart from the 1987 FA Cup final against Spurs don't register.
Their only claim to fame is probably having Jimmy Hill (Match of the Day presenter) as a fan, football memories are sparse.

He smiled and kind of agreed, then he told me that hardly anyone alive has witnessed Coventry being promoted, he said the last time they were promoted was 1967.
However he mentioned another amazing stat, saying that since he'd been alive (he was in his 30's) he's never even seen Coventry involved in a promotion race.

Made me think that as a Blade, maybe we should feel relatively lucky
I almost ALWAYS expect us to be challenging near the top of the table most season and have done for 50 years.

I've seen this stat before and did know we were near the top of the league for overall wins and it is accurate for 2 reasons.

1: We didn't play in the original league but our playing record starts not long after when the leagues were expanded to 2 divisions in the 1890's.
Several clubs like Arsenal, Spurs, Leeds, West Ham etc didn't enter the league until 20 years later, so we have a head start on them.

2: We don't have a great record for wins in the top flight but not many people might know this
When out of the top flight we have one of the THE BEST records, if not THE BEST of any club.
It used to be only 2 clubs promoted from the 2nd tier and we've several times finished 3rd, we had this habit of just missing out on promotion.
Hence the season after we'd build up plenty more wins, again going for promotion.

We've spent 62 years in the top flight and spent 67 years outside the top flight,
in those 67 years our record is very impressive, we've almost always (66% of the time) been involved in promotion challenges, which is incredible really.

Why not? We've spent a good chunk of our recent history outside the top flight where we play a lot more matches than in the top flight. So probably our win % is not top 6, but I don't doubt we've won that many matches.

I'd say success is measured by trophies won not matches. Quite clearly we are nowhere near being the 6th most successful club in the country. It means no more than saying we are the 6th club to score 30,000 goals.

In some ways it is a sign of a lack of success. If we had spent the past thirty years in the top flight we would have probably won fewer games. The best feeling in football though is winning a game so I am OK with that!

Depends if you mean comparitively to other clubs, or in general.
If we get automatic in 2nd place. That's huge success. If we have a reasonable place first season back in the Prem, huge success.
After that, our success or otherwise will be mainly on matches won, not trophies.

Another reason why we're so high in the WINS table is

3: More league matches are played (busier schedule) outside the top flight, so again another chance to win more games.

Good point from 1973Blade, if we'd had more success, we'd be playing more matches in the top flight, so it would be much more difficult to win matches.
However it's interesting to note, that Blades see more wins (on a consistent level) and more promotion challenges than almost any other club in the entire league.
However the fact that we aren't promoted so much, means that when involved in promotion challenges we've missed out on being promoted quite a lot.
Probably explains the cautions optimism and pessimism.

Like it or not our aim has to be to be in the top twenty six
To be competing for the premier league
If we fail to go up this season and the takeover doesnt change the financial situation then we will have to sell and rebuild
If we do go uo we have to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion at the very least

Wilders signings might not have had any impact on our premier keague relegation season but they certainly are now and thats what we have to aim to do

The gap between the haves and the have nots is going to get bigger and bigger and having new owners doesnt always help look at west brom now and wednesday ,bolton ,derby etc

In short if we go up it changes the future of the club for the next few seasons afterwards and hopefully with new owners we can build the clubs infrastructure to sustain that

You're complicating a simple situation. We can and have had success on occaision and getting promoted this season would add another success. The OP refers to a stat measured from Day 1 and our first game and means absolutely nothing per se in terms of success any more than announcing the 10th million Blades fan was clocked up to watch the game at Blackpool.

Nah. Winning titles and cups is no measure of success, why would anyone consider any of that matters. It's about how many you take to away games isn't it?
I mean why would a football fan care about their club winning trophies?

Saw this on Twitter but was sceptical looking at their tweets, anyone know if this is factually correct?
 
I think we are on 1999 league wins. It was 1984 before the start of this season and we have won 15 this season.

You're supposed to pick the stats that make you look best not the ones that most accurately describe something useful. Probably.

Is that stat by some objective measure? Or is it just pretty much everyone but us has?

"Biggest club" means different things to different people, so one could say it's subjective.
For some it's attendances, some it's trophies won, some it's season in the top flight, some it's potential.

Which ever criteria you choose to pick.....making it an objective/ factual statement
Sheff Utd are THE BIGGEST club in Britain, maybe even Europe, who have never reached a post war final, of course we've been in loads of semi-finals.

When I was younger there was only 2 other "reasonably big clubs" who could challenge us for that unwanted honour...regards never being in a post was final.
They were Middlesboro and Birmingham, however Boro reached a league cup final in 97 and Birmingham reached a league cup final in 2001.
