2 new signings

Freeman and Coutts. Freeman has bulked right up and it has benefited his game no end. Fantastic today. The big big plus for me today though was Coutts. He was always showing for the ball and finding space for himself. This isn't the same player I've watched the past 2 seasons, he was really really good today. I even saw him tackling people. No idea what Wilder has done to him but hats off because I thought he was a lost cause. I did put on another thread that we wouldn't get promoted with him in the side, and I'm happy to say he's making me look an idiot at the minute!!

Given the amount of players we had in the squad last year and the year before its odd that more focus wasn't given to improving the players already here by Adkins and Clough. Much cheaper than making new signings.

These players clearly already had talent, it must be a case of either confidence or getting the right application from them on the pitch.

Big positive in wilders defence for me as i don't think anyone expected them to contribute as much as they have.

Hopefully we see similar from Scougal too - as he looked good pre season.

Always knew he is a good player since the 2-0 win at Barnsley in April 2015. At last many of those who kept on criticising him now see what he brings to the team

for many it will take at least three seasons to banish their prejudices.

When Coutts was on form last season he was very good.

He just was never consistently on form.

Coutts is flourishing - ask for the ball and keep things ticking over. Do that and if others do there job then we have a decent chance.

Coutts has been a pathetic player to this season. Great if he can keep this form going but he needs to add some goals assists before I rate him.

Coutts best position in in front of the back 4. Good at finding space and then when he gets the ball, with one or two touches his pass goes to a player who is in a better position to move the ball forward. Strong on the ball and very good at shielding it

He was used differently last season as Brayford liked to play with him on the right

Again Sharp didnt have a good game today

Harsh on Freeman to get dropped last season, and Coutts has been good in last few games.

He's always been very capable technically but he's stepped it up for sure. He's playing with more aggression now. The transfer window's gone but he's still in the last year of his contract and is playing for his future. And maybe Wilder's motivated him too. Good news for us this season.

Coutts hardly played consistently well for a full 90 minutes last season. In fact he barely played a 90 minutes at a time.

Would be a fantastic bonus if he could become a tidy CM who keeps the team ticking over

I don't think the issue with Freeman is regarding him going forwards.It's more to do with his defensive qualities and tendency to switch off. Today the formation Gillingham played (and the back 3 for us) helped him enormously as he had an awful lot of space to get behind their diamond in the first half especially. He took full advantage of that and the disappearance of a disaffected Brayford was hardly apparent. He had a good game today.
