I'm hearing all sorts of shit quotes this morning, such as Dermot Gallagher on SSN:

"The ref's watch didn't buzz, so he can't give the goal".

Why can't he? The process should be the ref decision first, then look to the technology. Not the other way around. The above quote almost suggests that the refs are being more passive, paying less attention "oh it'll be alright, if it goes in, the watch will let me know..."

This is what’s annoying me, had it been a netbuster and his watch didn’t go off the goal would have been given regardless. That statement from Gallagher is a lie.

Things like this have happened for as long as football has existed technology and hundreds of cameras just mean we know about it more now. Refs getting pens wrong etc. etc. All just part of the game I’m afraid. Nobody will set a precedent by rewriting history for this game.

Imagine if we replayed it, lost and Norwood and Bash picked up injuries.

It’s fucking infuriating but it didn’t cost us the game, playing crap did. We might have gone on to win or we might have sat back, tried to hold onto the lead and ended up losing, we’ll never know. I’d have been a lot more annoyed if it was the 89th minute and still 0-0. In fact, I’d be buying a new TV and furniture if it had been.

No the points shouldn’t be added retrospectively.
There’s no way of knowing how the rest of the game could have panned out if the goal had been given correctly.

However, what there should be is some explanation and clear evidence to refute what is starting to look like some kind of conspiracy and favouritism towards the traditional top 6 teams.
The “product” on display is casting a question as to the integrity of the sport. And given the business model relies on the fan base as a whole rising and paying to watch they are putting the whole football pyramid at risk.

If (as i suspect) They cannot produce such evidence they need to be making changes to the system to ensure that this technology is applied transparently and consistently.
If they can’t produce those changes then the whole system of technology in football needs binning. Because since it came in the suggestion of bias and corruption has actually become worse than when decisions were left to the three officials on the pitch.

The club should definitely fight for the points in my opinion. The match officials, Sheffield United and the Premier League were let down by a product that is relied on for 100% accuracy. It's not human error, or even a dodgy VAR call. An essential product of a Premier League fixture was not functioning. It's a situation that hasn't happened before and won't happen again, resulting in unfair competition.

Yes, there was a full half to play, but the fact is we were not given a clear and obvious goal in a 0-0 draw due to failure of a Premier League funded product. Villa can keep their point, but we should fight for the 3.
