Blades 3 (Mills og, Field 2) Ipswich 1 (Lambert)

I was surprised that we had won against the media darlings, Ipswich, and my fears about getting relegation were disappearing fast. As I was at Mary Hare I didnt find out who had scored until the next morning. Only the prefects were allowed to read the newspapers until the papers were delivered in the Reading room at 11am. After breakfast I managed to persuade a prefect to find out who had scored for the Blades. He went to find out and came back to me saying "Mills own goal, Field two". Not the scorers I was expecting. It wasnt until a few days later that I found out Tony Field had scored a worldie when I got a letter from my dad through the post. It was weeks later I eventually saw Field's worldie on TV when "On the Ball" programme did a feature on SUFC. It was in 1993 when I first saw Mick Mills' own goal and Tony Field's first goal to put us 2 up when YTV released the 1968 to 1981 SUFC goals video!

Our goals are from 50 seconds in below link

The below link includes our goals and Ipswich's consolation goal. Ted Hemsley seems to be furious with Woody! From 15 mins 33 seconds

What a day to be alive that was

Blades 2 (Dearden, Woodward) Everton 2 (Lyons, Buckley)

My first visit to BDTBL in 8 weeks as I was home for the two week October holidays. I remember Woody's lovely goal. For many years, the ticket office in Cherry Street had the below photo hanging on the wall (I seem to remember it was still there in the 1980s, am I right, Rooks ?)

View attachment 194853

Not long after the 2nd goal there was a lot of fighting in the BLLT (I was in the BLUT watching several policemen go in the BLLT to stop the fighting and making arrests. Play carried on as normal on the pitch.

View attachment 194854

It was sickener when Mick Buckley equalised for Everton to make it 2-2

Have been waiting for this one Silent as it was my first visit to The Lane. I was 10 and I can still recall the excitement as I walked up the steps in the BLUT and saw the grass for the first time. That wow factor has never left me.

I love these articles you do and for your personal family insights. Much appreciated. Thanks.

Blades 1 (Field) Derby 2 (Lee2)

I dont remember the goals but remember Colin Boulton making a good save from TC's fierce shot at the Kop end also that it was a close game when the score was still 1-1, but it was Francis Lee who scored the winner. Thinking about it, if it was us that scored the winner and all the scores in the division were the same as it was before we played the last game at Birmingham then we would have needed a win at Birmingham to win the league! That was how close it was in the first division that season.

Leicester 3 (Worthington 2, Glover) Blades 0

A miserable day that I have a little memory of. On the way to the match my dad stopped at a Bookmakers to place his bets while myself, my dad's workmate (who had his girlfriend with us too) waited in the car. I was uncomfortable as the pair were cuddling, holding hands and kissing as if I wasnt in the car!

I realise it goes without saying but what a fantastic goal by Woody. The world class pass, the first touch and finish by Woody, absolutely magnificent. My dad and I had a season ticket for 6 seasons, 6 rows up from the “H” in Housleys and I was there sat behind your dad Silent.

One of my favourite Woody goals of all-time. I spent most of my youth trying to replicate it in our front room, in the garden, in the park, in the school playground...

Eric Taylor Testimonial match.

Wendy 0 England X1 5 (Currie, Brooking, Dobson, Worthington, Weller)

I was at the match with my dad sitting in the North stand. TC was made captain for the England side and I was expecting him to be a regular for the England International matches under Revie. How wrong was I!

I dont remember the goals, I dont remember Wendy fans giving TC stick during the match also that according to the reports he responded by giving the fans V signs after scoring the first goal!

Remember it well

Blades 3 (Dearden, Woodward, Eddy pen) Birmingham 2 (Hatton, Styles)

I can remember only two incidents of this match. When Birmingham's keeper, Dave Latchford, brought down Woody in the penalty box at the Lane End, I expected him to protest at the ref's decision to award a penalty but to my surprise he got up calmly and nodded his head as a sign that he agreed with the ref's decision. Eddy calmly took the penalty sending Latchford the wrong way to put us 3-1 up. The other incident was TC being substituted, I thought it was a mad decision and told my dad that he should stay on the pitch to see the game out. He replied "He deserved a rest so that he will be fit for England's match against Czechoslovakia on Wednesday". I told him that the game isnt safe yet and I was so annoyed!

1973/74 County Cup Final

Blades 0 Rotherham 0. Blades won 4-2 on penalties, our takers were Badger (missed), Field, Garbett, Bradford and Cammack. Brown saved one Rotherham penalty.

I wasnt at the match as I went back to my boarding school on the day before. I dont remember receiving a match report from my dad through the post so he probably didnt bother going to the match.

In the next day at school I looked at the back pages of the newspapers to find out how England got on in their European qualifying match against Czechoslovakia. England won 3-0 but to my disappointment I discovered that TC didnt play as I thought he would. I didnt feel like celebrating the win. I dont think I was aware of the reason why TC got subbed in the match against Birmingham.

Blades 2 (Field 2) Carlisle 1 (McIlmoyle)

I wasnt at the match as I was at Mary Hare. In the video footage below I noticed that TC had given the ball away three times! He must have had a poor game? Awful goalkeeping by Carlisle's Tom Clarke for both goals!

I was one of the urchins clinging to the white railings for this game, but picture quality isn't quite up to picking me out. The thing I remember most about this game is my dad saying afterwards "You could hear a pin drop when McIlmoyle scored for Carlisle".

So come on, who here was a member of EDS? I've always considered myself to be an Educated Dedicated Supporter, but for a while, I could state it officially.

Unite-EDS! Unite-EDS! Unite-EDS!

I had my first season ticket in that year . I remember sitting in the John St stand - front row cop end , and there was a sole Carlisle fan , off his head , stood at the back of the terrance shouting Carlisle , Carlisle , Carlisle … non stop all game

Derek Dooley starts his new job at Bramall Lane 50 years ago this week! I did find it strange at the time that a Wendy legend would work at SUFC. I thought he did ok.

League Cup 4th round

Blades 2 (Woodward, Eddy pen) Norwich 2 (MacDougall 2)

That evening I asked John, a Man U fan from Malvern, if he could listen to the final score from his transistor radio because he was 3 years above me at school and his bedtime was about a hour later than me. Being a second former I had to be in bed by 8.30pm! Equally keen on finding out the score was my Norwich supporting mate, David. When I got up in the next morning at 7am I immediately went to John's dormitory which was a floor above my dormitory but John was still in a torpor state still asleep lying in his bed like most of his dormitory mates were so I decided to come back to my dormitory to get dressed and told David that John isnt up yet. About 20 minutes later I tried again going to John's dormitory but he was still in a torpor state! His dormitory mates, not keen on waking John up, advised me to wait in the dining hall downstairs.

John was a bit late for breakfast (started 7.45am) so I eventually approached him and asked for the score. He had half forgotten about listening for the Blades v Norwich score the previous night but said "I think you won 2-1 or 2-0". It was good enough for me and I was delighted, told my Norwich supporting mate. He was disappointed as I went to my place in dining table dreaming about the Blades reaching the League Cup final.

After breakfast, I rushed upstairs to make my bed, cleaned my teeth, polished my shoes and then headed straight to my classroom to read the newspaper. David stayed in Mansell House (Boys boarding house) a bit longer because he was one of the few boys on duty to clean the dining hall. When I got hold of the Daily Express I got a horrible shock when I saw the below photo on the back page.

I was so confused at the fact that the score was 2-2 not 2-0 or 2-1 as John had said during breakfast. My heart had sunk, I read the match report but thought "We are still in the cup and might win the replay" so I decided to return to the dining room to let David know the correct score. David, with a broom in his hands, was delighted when I told him the correct score, he was in a celebratory mood and tried to hug me but I pushed him away!

Remember that game like it was yesterday . EC getting sent off . I was on the Kop and the fight was on the right hand side just beyond the half way line (looking from the Kop) I remember Currie running to break up the skirmish.

Really disappointed we drew of course

I dont remember how I found out the score that day, I think playing regularly for the school's u13s team on Saturday afternoons had largely impaired my memory of how I got to find out the scores of our matches during the 1974-75 season.
