Blades 0 Man United 1 (Best)

The match was the only time George Best scored a goal in a competitive game at Bramall Lane (he also scored one in TC's testimonial). In Alan Hodgkinson's autobiography "Between the Sticks" ghost written by Les Scott (a Stoke fan) who obviously didnt check out the facts properly. In the opening chapter Hodgy went into great lengths about George Best scoring against us at BDTBL but he said the match was in in October 1967, In fact the Manchester United goalscorers in their 3-0 win against us were Brian Kidd, Denis Law and John Aston.

Reading the below reports it does seem Best scored a lovely goal but not sure if it was the same as Hodgy described in his autobiography

Thank you to Silent Blade for continuing to post these items which make really interesting reading. One thing which struck me as odd was the reference to Wilson in the report by Peter Howard as “the former England left back”. Unless I have missed something this would appear to be Ray Wilson who went on to play in every England game in the 1966 World Cup. Had he fallen out of favour in January, 1965? His Wikipedia page makes no mention.

Puzzled me too

Even today we are still no wiser why Kettleborough was sent off.

Of course this was before red cards and I recall the confusion. It was the first time I'd seen a player dismissed.

im on that first picture silent me and a mate were stood in front of cricket pavilion for that game lol kettlebro was walking before ref even got to him

I've often thought there must be Blades who can see themselves on some of these old photos. There you are ancient - you come up with the goods.
yeah definetly on that picture somewhere in front of the cricket pavilion was only 12 and just started going but cant remember why we were stood there can remember having an oxo or bovril it was freezing lol

Both teams wore red and white, only time in our history when the ref allowed both teams wearing their red and white shirts?

My first season supporting the Blades this one.
I have the programme for the Blackburn game, so my Dad must have taken me,but have no particular memories of it.
Still remember those match days though, waiting outside a pub, don’t know which one with other kids, with pop n crisps, whilst my Dad had a couple inside..That first sight and smell of the Lane, and a rush to the front railings on John Street, to peer through the gaps to watch the match.Been hooked ever since.

1936 FA cup final was the same. I assume they thought stripes were sufficiently distinct from solids.

Match was supposed to be played on Saturday 20th March but it was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. In those days matches that were postponed were often rearranged for 2 days later.

I know it’s a bit belated, but went to the home game against Man U, on Boxing Day, ‘64
Had to laugh at what they said about Best in the programme notes.”A youngster of great promise”
They knew a bit about football, our programme writers back in the day.And yes he scored the winner.
