The game had everything...2 red cards (including 1 when the player had been subbed) a saved penalty and a good goal. Gutted we lost but we could have sneaked an equaliser at the end and with 10 men I expected us to lose. The ref was a total ****, yep Kilgallon's challenge wasn't good and maybe a red card although some refs would have given a yellow. However, their player used an elbow into the side of Naughton's face and got a yellow. Very dangerous play but no red card.

generally a poor performance, Kyle Naughton excepted, but the game was decided by the referee I feel. Paddy had a rush of blood, actually he had two; came for one earlier and missed it and was determined to make up for it, unfortunately. Shame that the ref didn't see the Johnson elbow, without doubt a worse challenge than Kilgallon, which was no worse than a yellow. But then again I wasn't overly impressed when I heard Mike Dean had the game, likes the limelight too much does that one!! Stokes did OK for the time he was on, quite impressed by that and Howard showed a few useful touches, but maybe not the type of game for him. We'll be ok I'm sure!!!

Not a good game for anyone to really shine unfortunately. Horribly stop/start and utterly dominated by the referee.

I HATE to see a red card come out first without so much as a word in an ear before hand - unless the situation genuinely demands it. A very juvenile decision from Mike Dean I'm afraid.

Mike Dean - Likes the sound of his own whistle.

load of crap, naughton was only decent player, stokes looked ok when he came on

Damn sight happier than I was after we'd lost last time anyway!

ABSOLUTE SHITE....................the pigs deserved the win.

You kidding right?

Maybe before we went down to ten men yeah but second half we were the better side without really creating that many chances. Apart from the goal and the pen then hardly threatened in my opinion and we deserved at least a draw.

Referee ruined the game, no flow completely changed game with that crazy decision. Everyone in ground knew it was wrong decision. Still personally I saw plenty of positives in the second half. We could have folded but we were the team that were most likely to score to be fair.

It's a horrible one to take but it happens and lets look forward to February and the return.

BB do you actually support united?

My take on yesterday being the first Blades game I have seen stone cold sober for some time !

I agree with SEB about his feelings for the ref. As soon as I saw him leading the teams out I thought "Oh shit, its the Mike Dean show"

Wednesday started by far the brighter with 25K squealers and banging trotters behind them. They attacked with pace which is not something our back 4 are traditionally good at coping with. We then upped our game and started to look dangerous ourselves with some good interplay. But for some better delivery from Cotterill in particular we might have taken the lead. At this point I could see the Blades taking control of the match after the initial shaky period. Then up stepped Mr. Dean.

Kilgallons foot was high admittedly but not stupidly high and there was no intent he was merely trying to regain control of the ball. Never a red in a million years. It will definitely be overturned on appeal. It was at this point the ref ruined the game.

Their goal was one of those things. Paddy had come for a ball initially and punched it. We all know this is not a strong part of his game so he should have stayed put. When the ball came back in he decided to come again. Whether he shouted for Morgs to leave it we'll never know.(If you look at the Sky footage after the goal when Paddy pushed Morgs, Morgs seems to mouth "I didn't hear . . "). It was a good defensive header by Morgs, high and away, and Watson would never have tried shooting if Paddy hadn't been stranded. Also 99 times out of 100 he would not have got it on target.

Speed got booked immediately after the restart. He had obviously seen the reply of the red card incident at half-time and told Dean he was a cheat.

The penalty was definitely a pen. Personally I think it should have been re-taken because Paddy was a good yard off his line when the ball was struck. People have said the ref was trying to level things up by allowing the save to stand. I don't agree because if that was the case he wouldn't have given it in the first place. Fact of the matter is, this ref is a prick. What about Laws turning his back? "I can't watch, that'll look good on the telly". Wanker.

Johnson should have gone for the elbow on Naughton. The ref was a little unsighted but why did he give a yellow? he must have seen something. Where was the refs Arse-istant?

As for Johnson with the water bottle. If he could hit the ball like that they would have been 3 up at half-time. Anyone else notice it nearly hit Blackie? That would have been interesting if it had caught him straight in the kite. Interesting point - If a fan had thrown a full water bottle at a football match, he would have been banned for life from football grounds. Incredible show of petulance from somebody who has an attitude problem.

Positives:- Naughton(again), Stokes looked decent when he came on, he could be a solution to our left-sided problem. We had a lot more passion and commitment than the performance at the sty last season. I think a lot of people are getting carried away with negative comments because of who the opposition were and they wanted desparately to win. It wasn't that bad a performance and if the ref hadn't spoiled it, it would have been a different game altogether.

We're still in the shake-up, three points against Southampton and another three against Preston will see us pushing for the top two places. Let's get behind the lads. The pigs might be above us but I know who I'd rather be supporting.

Come on you red and white wizaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaards!!!!!

I thought that we started the game poorly again and Wednesday looked the more likely to score with the pace of Johnson proving to be a real problem for our deffence.

We had just started to gain some momentum in the five minute spell before the sending off and from this point onwards we huffed and puffed but Lee Grant was rarely troubled.

It was a typcial derby and there was not much quality on show but i do feel that Wednesday deserved to win the game; who knows what would have happened if it were 11 against 11 but the bottom line is that it wasn't.

I'm not going to go on about the referee but he made a massive error and it had a big effect on the game. Everyone makes mistakes and we should look a little closer to home before we dish out the blame because the goal came about due to some pretty appauling deffending.

That said the sending off killed the game in my opinion because we could not afford to be on the end of a heavy defeat in a derby match and as such we couldn't afford to throw everything at them and risk being picked off on the counter attack.

I was gutted but i'm pleased that we have a home game so soon after the derby in order to get that defeat out of our system; i have a very strong feeling that Southampton will be on the end of a real hiding.

Up the blades.

Sorry to revert back the the cheating ref, but was it Mike Dean who allowed Skrtle to karate kick a Man City player?

Mike Dean has quite an interesting past if you look around the wonders of the interweb...

[edit] Involvement with betting syndicate
On February 26, 2005, Dean was suspended due to his involvement with a horse racing betting company, in which he appeared to be violating his refereeing contract by using his football status to help promote the betting company. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited, which supplies Premiership referees, investigated Dean's links with Arbitros Racing and ruled that he should not officiate until the matter had been resolved to the board's satisfaction.[7] A statement was later made that Mike Dean had been suspended until May 31, 2005 by the PGMOL, for breaching the terms of his employment contract, which require match officials to seek permission from them for any business ventures or the use of their status as a PGMOL official for promotional purposes. He was also required to cease his involvement with this venture and any similar activities.[8][9]

He also decided to turn the Sheffield derby (19/10/08) into the Mike Dean show with a series of blunders. He sent United's Matt Kilgallon off for a nothing challenge, and missed an elbow by Wednesday's Jermaine Johnson on Kyle Naughton. He did eventually show Johnson a second yellow card AFTER he had been subbed.

On full time it was described as Mike Dean 1-0 Sheffield United
