You’ve not mentioned the 3 failures against Leicester in the 1961 FA cup semi final, 2 draws then lost the 2nd replay.

So it that 20th time lucky?

Pretty incredible really….a 2 horse race and we never win.
It’s like going on the roulette table and putting £100 on red it comes up black.
So you put £100 on black but this time it comes up red, so you try black again, still red, black again still red.
The switch it to red but this time it’s back to black.

Is this a trick? Why do we never win in massive (history changing) matches?

When we do have favourable results in massive matches…..it ends up making no difference.
For example the 5-2 away at Leicester when we won, we would have been promoted anyway becuase Newcastle lost.
We were basically playing for the league title but Leeds won, so our win made no difference to our position. We could have lost and still been promoted.

The other massive game was Burnley 0 Hull City 2.
The season had finished but (shockingly) Hull were allowed to play a re-arranged match after the season ended and they need to win 3-0 to pip us for promotion.
Hull were really unlucky and should have scored at least 3 goals, however I’m thinking it’s rare that a club celebrates promotion with no fans at the match.
So regards that promotion in 1984 we were deprived our mass promotion party. I reckon if 15K Blades had attended then Hull would have won 3 or 4-0.

21st time lucky if we're counting all semi finals and finals.

We also lost the 1936 FA Cup Final.

We've only lost 7 in a row, as we won the 2012 play off semi-final. So we can all relax.

Edit: it's none, we're on a winning streak of two wins since Monday.

We should have won 6 of those ties in my opinion...

All 4 PO finals + Yeovil and Swindon

Dont forget the horrendus relegation matches , where we managed to get defeat from certain safety , if we are having a despot thread let`s have one

What about FA Cup Semi 1961 ? ...lost to Leicester after 3 matches....?.

I could be wrong, but I think the last time we won a "big game" were losing would have made a difference was in the 6-1 win over Tottenham in the last game in 38-39 that sealed promotion from division 2. Had we lost, Wednesday would gone up instead.

I reckon that in all 4 previous play off finals we were favourites to win as we were the most highly placed team and there's also been 5 occasions since the war when.we needed a result from our last game to stay up and would have been favourites to get that result (49, 68. 81, 94, 07) but didn't get it.
So that's 9 failures against the odds.

Conversely I can't think.of any post war successes against the odds. The nearest would be the 84 promotion, but pre game Hull needed a 3 goal win at a decent ish Burnley team to.pip us. Few thought they would get it. It was only when they were 2 up with 25 mins left that we looked doomed. For once,.we weren't

Wigan 2007 alone blows all play-off final losses combined out of the water in terms of shitness.

We didn't even need to win that match if I recall correctly and Wigan went down to 10 men with 15 minutes left to play.

We needed a draw, that's it, the same as Chelsea in 94 and Walsall in 81!

Wigan was a fucker as Warnock thought he'd done it after we'd beat West ham and gave up on the other games, infuriatingly at Villa where he practically admitted he would let Villa win.

He never once played the same side again after WH and like the total twat he is made the week leading up to Wigan about his contract, and played Jags out of position.

I knew at kick of wed lose we just weren't at it, special shout out to Webber missing a sitter. That was on Warnock that one.

If you count the semi final losses do you not need to count the semi final wins as breaks in the chain.

100% this. You can’t count play off semi final losses, but ignore the play off semi final wins.

It’s the same flawed logic as “why do we always fall at the final hurdle?”, then citing defeats in various rounds of the FA Cup. Or “it’s the final pass that let us down” (the final pass, by definition, is the one that went to the opposition!).

That's the lowest I have felt ever leaving a match.

But we DID win a "playoff" in 1893. We beat div 1 Accrington when we were in div 2 and took their place and they were relegated, much the same as our games with Bristol City. Copied this from Wikki.

The 1892–93 season Test Matches were played on 22 April 1893. Accrington of Division One played Sheffield United of Division Two in a game at Trent Bridge, Nottingham which United won 1–0. A goal from United's Scottish forward John Drummond was enough to clinch victory for the Yorkshire side and saw them promoted to play in the First Division for the following season, with Accrington taking their place in the second.

Aye I’ve got all those appearances too for a full house on my Blades Failure Bingo Card 😂⚔️

Yep, that Villa game and how we handled it (they were a mediocre side and had packed up for the season) was beyond appalling. We could have gone there, had a right pop at them, and even if we had lost it would probably have only been by the odd goal, making it nearly impossible for Wigan to overtake us on goal difference on the final day. Blades fans were in fancy dress that day. It was like the team were too. Just needed one professional performance and we were safe, but as usual we made a right cock up of it and lost 3 nil i think. I knew that night driving home that we were probably going down due to our unprofessional attitude. Warnock acting the all about me, tw@t didn't help matters.

The Villa away match in 2007 is probably the most spineless, pointless performance I’ve ever seen from us.
