still not mathmatically impossible, are there 9 winnable games , I hope so
we dont seem to do draws
but 8 and 2 draws could suffice

I always look at games in little groups and think what would be a good return from them irrespective of where the points come.

After West Brom I thought we needed 5 points from Chelsea, West Ham, and Fulham.

Still on although I can't help thinking last night was a sign. That game summed up our season for me.

We could easily have got a draw despite being second best. In fact, if we don't give that stupid goal away so soon after the equaliser, who knows we might even have knicked it against the run of play.

A point, and especially 3, would have been a big psychological advantage IMHO.

Win the next two however, and the mindset changes hugely again.

just to see what we need here is a list of 18th placed teams over 12 seasons
17th and safety is one point more
  • 2003-04: 33 points (Leicester City)
  • 2004-05: 33 points (Crystal Palace)
  • 2005-06: 34 points (Birmingham City)
  • 2006-07: 38 points (Sheffield United)
  • 2007-08: 36 points (Reading)
  • 2008-09: 34 points (Newcastle United)
  • 2009-10: 30 points (Burnley)
  • 2010-11: 39 points (Birmingham City)
  • 2011-12: 36 points (Bolton Wanderers)
  • 2012-13: 36 points (Wigan Athletic)
  • 2013-14: 33 points (Norwich City)
  • 2014-15: 35 points (Hull City)
  • 7 out of those 12 35 and points would have sealed survival
  • only 1 10/11 needed 40
The Premier League clubs with the fewest points to survive:since 20 team league
  • =5. Bradford, Fulham, West Brom, Southampton, Brighton – 36 points.
  • Hull City, 2008/09 – 35 points.
  • West Ham, 2009/10 – 35 points.
  • Aston Villa, 2019/20 – 35 points.
  • West Brom, 2004/05 – 34 points.
one team could have survived on31 once and 42 was needed once so cancel each other out
the average is 37 /38 is safety
9 teams have survived wioth 36 or less , only 2 have needed over 39

If Brighton, Burnley and Newcastle were in freefall I would be more optimistic but they are managing to pick up points to keep a buffer between the bottom three. Looking at the remaining fixtures I reckon we'll win three/four more games but who knows.

That's the killer - there's no one going Tom Petty on us. As well as the size of the gap . There is normally one that drops like a stone.

We have won 3 and drew 2 in 23 games.

We are not winning 8 and drawing 2 in the final 15.

We might win 2 or 3 at a push and draw a few. I'd take 20+ points at this point.

weve also won 3 in last 5
what happened pre xmas has gone
weve lost to three top clubs in 2021 , spurs chelsea and man city
of the 15 left we only have liverpool and arsenal of the big clubs to play both at home and they are both faltering
leicester are probably the toughest game left
of the games left we won 7 and drew 3 last season ,not counting fulham away

dont understand just throwing in the towel

west ham didnt in 2007 10 points adrift with only 9 games left stayed up by 3 points in the end ie 13 point overhaul in 10 games

we are hampered by feeble minded fans with no faith, never heard one hammer offer it was over

records are there to be broken, its belief not happy clapping ,
many doubters xmas 2019 were still sayiong we d get relegated when 6th

whats up with our fans and defeatism , is it inbred

You do know that the gap to 17th keeps getting wider?

This nonsense has been going on for several weeks.

First it was, "we only need 1.2 points per game"
Then "we only need 1.4 points per game"
Next "we only need 1.5 points per game"
...and so on.

Now we're up to 15 Cup FInals.

Performances have been better since 2021 started and the F.A. kindly allowed us to play Bristol Rovers. That's good.

But I also have to admire the unrelenting optimism (even if it's slightly annoying) of those people who watched us last night and still think we'll be able to perform like Everton for the rest of this season.

Only one record we need to concern ourselves with and that's Derby's.

Fair comment blade too long

We haven't got as many games for this all conquering Blades juggernaut to overcome the teams in front of us though.

Helps when they had a forward line of Zamora and Tevez. We have no one at all near that quality.

theyd be shit most of the season till the end
they were 10 points adrift for a reason after 28 games

its about getting results , we match the remaining games last seasons scores to whats left we can get 38 points with a win at fulham

I assume you mean Neville Chamberlain rather than Atlee?

However, your steadfast refusal to accept the inevitable and plough on regardless puts you more in the mindset of the bloke who was leading the other side.

Done, finished, kaput. I have seen nothing that gives me any cause for optimism. It would help if we could hold onto the ball occasionally.

We're not really playing Fulham on the 20th at 9pm are we, Didzy, Billy and Jags have to be back in the care home at 10. Suppose they will have to play first half only and be subbed off
