15 Championship clubs challenge FL over better deal

The Championship clubs had better be careful here.

If a European Super League goes ahead and and we lose lets say the top 5/6 clubs to it, then domestically SKY are going to be left with a big problem.

The solution could be 2 English leagues of Prem 1 and Prem 2, which may appease the remaining English fans and although the Prem league at the moment says they aren't interested in a 2 league structure, they may be if the big 5 or 6 decide to leave.

As for breaking away from L1 & L2, perhaps the forum members who live in Germany may want to comment - I believe they only have 2 fully professional leagues, which this type of action may lead to.

Hope we’re not one of those. Pure greed and self interest, same as what happened when the PL was formed and we were guilty of the same self interest then.

If we were still stuck down in League One we’d see this as bad news fearing being even more cut adrift. We should stand up and say we don’t want to be part of it.

We can’t moan about the greed of the Premier League then be part of this. Hypocritical.

True - but times change and I doubt many chairmen of football clubs have many scruples and quite possibly have to be hypocritical to get where they are. It would be interesting to know what proportion of clubs in the top two divisions are not owned/run by British involvement. A trend that shows little sign of abating.

Football has been going this way since home clubs stopped giving away teams attendance money.

When you take into consideration just how much less anyone who isn't in the premier league receives for TV money, it really isn't a surprise that clubs are getting pissed off about this deal.

Add to the pittance of an 'increase' in TV revenue for what would effectively be every midweek championship game being televised and the hit clubs would see as a result of said televised games, I'd be astonished if ANY championship club agrees to it!

The football leagues view is that it helps lower league clubs, which is inevitably will, but at the expense of the championship clubs. When you look at what Championship clubs are spending on transfer fees alone to try and get a piece of the premier league pie, is it any wonder that the likes of Derby & Leeds are kicking up a fuss about it?

Meanwhile, the premier league sides get yet another gross increase in TV revenue and parachute payments when they get relegated remain, to ensure they keep their financial might above everyone else.

Whoever thought that this 'deal' would be widely accepted has evidently been smoking some seriously strong shit.

Three named sides are Derby, Villa and Leeds. Coincidentally, three sides who have spent a shitload of money.

Could it be possible that the clubs demanding a bigger payday are the ones who are flying close to the sun in terms of their finances? Click here to find out.

A breakaway would be just stupid and is entirely about greed if the reason is money only. The article implies this though, but the article refers to concerns over internet and red button games, so perhaps there is more to it.

It sounds daft, but i am glad that the financial deal is only £119 per season, it highlights the obscenity of the PL deal where each team receive something like that in a single season! Keep the EFL deal as it is, but go after the Premier League to invest more into the game.

Can't get the link to work Tom, probably me.

Which may well have been brought about via the Blades 4th division season!

They've had a third for about a decade

surely the question to sky is why do 72 league clubs get less than man utd get per season

the deal is pathetic, in which universe is it fair, some championship clubs get bigger gates than some premier teams , so the viewing public are more likely to
watch leeds v villa than bournemouth v cardiff

<< Another sticking point appears to be a dispute over appearances on the red button and internet.
Many clubs believed that there would be just one match shown as an alternative on the platform on live midweek nights but plans to show several could affect gates, they believe >>

How is it possible that "many clubs" didn't know Sky would be showing all their midweek matches on the red button?
Either the clubs have cocked up or Sky have been breaking the terms of the agreement.
More likely to be the club's fault or they could just legally refuse to have their matches shown. Surely?

Pigs started it Friday; turn up but refuse to play.

But one could then say you’re being hypocritical by following a league team. The whole football industry is surrounded by money and greed. Hence why some have turned their back on league football and watch amateur football instead.
As we’re one of the bigger clubs then we will be in that group, it’s all about self interest, it’s normal.

I can't understand what the "big" clubs in the EFL stand to gain over this. A different shareout of the kitty would result in them getting an extra few hundred k's, maybe a million each. Which is a drop in the ocean in football terms and is unlikely to advance their cause one iota. Do any of them really think an extra million in their warchest in January is going to send them on their way to the promised land of the Premiership? On the other hand this amount of money is the difference between survival or otherwise for a L1/2 club.

By drip feeding the EFL this money - not enough to make a huge difference but enough to keep them at heel, Sky and the Premiership are toying with the EFL and they're too stupid to realise it. This is not helped by the Leeds/Forest/Villa clique who honestly believe they have a divine right to be in the Prem and don't give a shit about fair play within the EFL

All they’ll do is pay higher wages to players and then scream poverty again in five years time when they’ve overspent again.

If the EFL package is worth more, then find some fucker to pay more, like BT, or Amazon.

its not hypocrasy to want a fairer system
If , nay when we reach the prem Id gladly take 80 m rather than 120, to spread the money around

fOOTBALL SHOULD BE A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD , NOT THE HAVES AND HAVE NOT SYSTEM WE HAVE NOW

How can any cup game be fair when if you draw man city or liverpool in the cup you know their bench is worth more than your FL72 clubs spent in its history

Got this from the Sunderland forum, don’t know where the poster got it from. Neither Sheffield club mentioned. Actually would like to see both Sheffield clubs say they weren’t interested, two of the Championships biggest clubs saying no, we stand with the EFL.

“In addition to the leading duo, the 15 signatories are believed to include Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Reading, Preston North End, Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough, Swansea City and Birmingham City, with smaller clubs such as Rotherham United and Millwall siding with the EFL. Brentford are understood to be the only club of the 16 who attended the meeting not to support the threat to leave the EFL”

Get more money........pay more for players and wages. What is the point? No,really. What is the point?
Exactly because that is exactly what will happen. Nothing will change at all, it’ll just go into players and agents pockets making it more difficult each passing year for those clubs unfortunate enough to not be involved to compete.

Just like the Premier League now.
