After seeing United a fair amount this season, I can see the traits of a luckless relegation side.

History should dictate that any club can be relegated with constant downgrading of the quality in the 1st team squad inevitability leading to a poor league finish.

I firmly believe Mr McCabe and Mr Birch are blissfully ignorant to the warning signs that are getting bigger by the week.

11 years ago United played in the infamous Port Vale game ( I still have nightmares about Kozluk's cross from that night) a 3-1 defeat left us in the bottom three and sparked some nasty scenes resulting in Heath and McDonald resignation.

Since then United have been to 2 play off finals, 2 cup domestic semi finals and spent 1 season in the Premier League, after these dizzying heights of nearly achievement United have now it seems, regressed back to the standards on and off the pitch of 1999-2000.

On November the 20th United play Crystal Palace, I've got a sinking feeling SUFC will be back in the bottom 3 of the Championship, completely the cycle that will have taken 11 years nearly to the day to complete.

Unfortunately I don't think there's another Neil Warnock or Pre Recession Kevin McCabe to come swooping in to save us.

Sadly League One is not a possibility but an inevitably.

Well no, no it's not.

But I also see worrying signs of relegation. The ability to grind out ugly points on a regular basis is of particular concern.

I think it'll be close, but reckon we'll pull through.

I think we're all aware of our lack of quality but to say such an eventually is inevitable.....well thats a bit premature if you ask me. Its not inevitable at all its just a real possiblity that the eternal optimists and directors dont want to acknowledge. The players and hierarchy constantly talk about a promotion push and I find that sadly amusing if not a little baffling

In terms of ability our side is about as far away from a Championship promotion push as you can be without being in the division below! Some individuals need to stop pretending we're chasing the top flight because we're not. We're trying to fix what is broke so we dont go the other way.

United IMO have enough to avoid relegation comfortably but they have to be aware that no one is too good. All it takes is a bit of over confidence or to relax a bit too much and we could well find ourselves where we dont want to be. On paper and in reality there are probably half a dozen sides worse than us in this league but we still have work very hard to avoid being sucked into it.

It is important to be realistic, but whilst I'm concerned I'm not going to panic because I dont think there is any need to just yet.

Ah you're a happy soul aren't you :)

I disagree

>Ah you're a happy soul aren't you
but he does have a point.. i'm not optimistic either.. but if we got raided for all of the high earning 'talent' as a result (monty and elpiton) it would be a worthwhile exercise IMO

Having lived through some relegations, I can categorically state this is not a club that will go down. It's just going to be a dreary unexciting year.

I can categorically state this is not a club that will go down...

No you can't. How can you?

Whilst I think we might just scrape through this season, I say it with as much hope as expectation.

When you look at the squad you don't see anybody that you think "Ah, but he hasn't been playing, he'll make a massive difference" or "but we only need one or two and we'll be there or thereabouts".

We need a massive overhaul. We're poor up front, poor in midfield and our defence has been leaking dodgy goals of late, as has our keeper.

I was optimistic when Speed took over because he actually had us playing decent football with shit players, but if he doesn't get the backing, which I suspect will be the case, there's only so far we can go with him trying to get the most out of a very limited, both in terms of numbers and talent, squad.

Ahh, but Latters, how far is Ryan France off being fit? That could be the kick start we've been waiting for.

I'm sure, when we were recruiting top quality back up in the summer, I read a hundred times that we were only a signing or two away from glory. Or was I dreaming.

Oh yes, forgot about him, maybe things aren't that bad!

You weren't dreaming and I remember reading the same thing in disbelief.

I've so far stayed away from the other thread asking who we should sign because A. with the ambition of the board at the moment, nobody "within our reach" would make a difference as it seems we're unwilling to spend and B. it would take far too long to name the 7 or 8 first teamers plus back up that we could do with!

I waved goodbye to any chance of a play-off place once the transfer window closed.:hello:

I agree completely absolutely - there is no way that anyone should be talking about a promotion push. That said, anyone could finish in places 2-6 at the moment and everyone's beating each other - making it even more of a shitter that we've wasted the first half of this season at least.
