10 Game Review

They always say that 10 games is when you should first sit back and assess where you are - so here is my assessment.

At the start of the season I went through our fixtures and plotted what I felt was the easiest way that those fixtures could produce 40 points for us. My 40 point target is plotted here against our actual results - and also, for interest, against our last Prem performance. Clearly, our efforts have put us comfortably ahead of my target and of our last Prem season in 06/07 - so all good.



However, if we are going to survive - then we need to be17th or better - and so I also began monitoring our performance against the last 3 teams to finish 17th. This plot shows that comparison - and we are only just level with the worst of those 3 performances (Southampton in 17/18) and behind the other 2.



So although we seem to be well on target for safety, history might suggest that things are somewhat tighter. I think that the reason for this apparent contradiction is that we have had a particularly challenging 10-game programme, having played 5 of our 10 games against top 6 clubs.

Teacher's Report - Excellent Progress this far, but we will need to maintain this level of effort.

The 17th one pretty useless with the league as it is currently, 4 of the "big 6" are beatable, 2 are currently dog awful and below us, so supposed lesser teams taking maximum points is skewing it all against previous seasons where you were lucky to get a point home or away.

Interesting though nonetheless, good effort.

My 10-game review is impression-based rather than statistical: all 10 games, against teams from top to bottom of the league, have been competitive. We have shown that we can put out a team which has the ability and the mentality to give any PL team a hard game, and to give themselves a chance of winning points. Plenty of things can go wrong, but at the moment we are mid-table on merit. Way above my expectations.

My experience of the top division that once it gets into the second half of the season the more established clubs start to get their act together and start to dig out results

The less established teams can struggle and get cut off at this point so I'm just looking at us to get as many points in the bag as we can before this period kicks in

I think we’re clearly a midfielder and a striker short still.

Sharp hasn’t looked up to it in the premier league I don’t think and although he’ll always have a role to play with his clinical finishing his general play just isn’t quick enough at this level. Reference the sending off, can see he’s stepping over the ball to put his body between the man and the ball and underestimates how fast their player was coming. He’s had some serious minutes recently and I thought he was largely ineffective.

I still think Lundstram flatters to deceive and still isn’t up to it. Puts a lot of effort in and defensively solid but if we could have a midfielder that could take a grip of the game we’d be much better off. Reference his game vs Arsenal - passes the ball 3 times in a row to our players who are forced to give the ball away under either pressure or from having to deal with the bad pass. Today he switched it twice under no pressure and zabaleta effortlessly knocked it away and took it under control in one situation. Kicks the ball out of play a lot too. I don’t think he’s awful, I just think we’re good enough to be able to do better in that department.

I think Norwood is still finding his feet and hasn’t been as accurate nor consistent YET this year. Hopefully it’ll come as he is the best passer of the ball at the lane in a very long time but he’s been loose in possession a few too many times and due to his deep lying “quarterback” style it can leave us gaping open if he doesn’t take care of the ball.

I think McBurnie will prove to be a very good player for us however we need to stop pumping it up to him when he’s on the pitch. For Swansea he was best when linking play from deep then continuing his run higher up the pitch. He needs to add a stone onto his frame which is easily done in the next 2-3 years at his age.

I think we’ve started as good as anyone could imagine but sometimes we have to believe in ourselves a little more, we’re f’cking good.

Wilder and Knill so far - tactical geniuses.

Thanks interesting graphs.I reckon we have had only one disappointing or against expectations result and that was 1-0 loss to Southampton goal of month. 4 points from last two games particularly good. Our strong unchanged defence has been main asset and we will be lucky to keep this as season progresses. Got some ' easier' fixtures coming up before Christmas so we need to start scoring more, particularly at home. Season report so far in 7th place ? You fill up my senses...

Done fine so far, Biggest worry is if we picked up a long term injury to either Egan or JOC.

Agree lundstrum has been brilliant all season and played really well yesterday, he was class against Arsenal. As for Sharp (original comment from pittsburg) he's hardly had any game time, when he's come on he's done well, caused defenders problems, kept the ball well, won fouls when we've been under the cosh. He's just not had enough time to get on the end of any chances.

The 17th club has been 2,3 and 6 points respectively above safety over the last 3 seasons.

Superb first 10 games. It would be great at some point to 'click' and dominate for a prolonged spell. Hopefully behind the scenes they can start planning the JTW for a tricky second season in the top flight rather than panic buys to avoid relegation and selling the saleable playing assets. Not that I am sure we will have any money left. No complaints from me LMA manager of the year 2 years running?
