It does, but 3 wins in 9 isn't promotion form either.. even in a league as bad as this.

I'm not negative in the slightest mate, infact i'm a hell of a lot positive than most.

We beat a dire side last night without playing well, but we did a lot of that in the first season and ended up on 92 points. People forget we didn't always play fantastic and I forget the number of times Ched bailed us out by scoring, just as Che and Billy did last night.

I was merely pointing out a different stat to yours. Stats can do anything you want them too, but they don'y hide the fact either way that there's a lot of work to do on the pitch.

I've got 50quid on Us and Pompey to win our league so i've certainly no need to be negative.

Your post isn't the most coherent, but what I can take from it is that I bring a negative vibe for other posters? Being honest I think that's a load of shite.

We beat a dire side last night without playing well,
what sort of line is that
we beat a side weve never ever beaten before
we beat another team from league one

gills fans would have said on day one we won 4-0 but they were a dire side that sheffield united

you play whos in front of you

not beat someone 3-0 then make up excuses about how poor they were to avoid saying we out played them
why oh why do blades fans start and finish everything negatively
it astounds me
we lose we are crap we win they were crap is the only reason

why bother

At which point did I make an excuse? It's a simple fact. We beat a dire team without playing well.

Two weeks ago we beat a decent Rochdale side, again without playing well.

Gillingham certainly did beat a dire Sheffield United side on the opening day, they were probably questioning how they only scored four!

You do play who's in front of you, and you can only beat what you play against, but in my opinion if we play like that week in week out we won't get automatic promotion. I also think Adkins knows this and will look to address it further than Hammond, if not now then certainly in January.

beg to differ
if we win games 3-0 without breaking sweat Id say it augers well

man utd and chelsea got rather big doing just that

Last season we said these are the teams we have to beat, we did that last night not in the most convincing way but a win, I am relativity happy at the moment if we was mid table then I would be worried.

Pleased with the 3 points, clean sheet and +3 GD but we wouldn't have beaten a better team than Fleetwood last night. That has to improve by Saturday or we won't beat Millwall.

Then we'll have to agree to disagree my friend.

I do agree there were good signs last night, but in my opinion we only played well for a 15 minute spell where we scored the two goals. On another night, a better side would have took advantage of the other 75 minutes where we looked rank average, particularly the first half.

That said, come May I certainly hope that you are right and I am wrong :)

that's right, they had a big day out at S2 last season, not so this season. As you say these are the teams we have to beat.

football stats are wonderful arent they

They are - we are third highest scorers in the division and sticking it in at one end. But we are in the bottom half on goals against, so good to get that clean sheet last night.

Hope you've got huge odds on us and Pompey to win our league !!!

I guess I can see where you are both coming from here so to an extent you are both right and it isn't worth arguing.

On paper we are a much improved team and very much heading in the right direction. We are up there as one of the top goalscorers in the league and we are tightening things up at the back. Happy days!

This can not be used however to detract from the fact that we still aren't good enough and need significant improvement. We won't get away with flat performances every week. We bizarrely came out of last nights drab performance with a 3-0 win and we will happily take that however a similar poor performance on Saturday saw us drop 2 points at Oldham.

August was a good month for us but September was a more forgettable one! At present October looks to be a month of recovery and stability however this doesn't make us a good team.

The next 6 fixtures now offer the opportunity to kick on, hit a run of form and get some points on the board however we do 100% need to see improvements.

Adkins measures and patience are starting to show dividends
we arent the finished article, but last night saw us sweep away a side we previously have struggled against with ease
if we cant take positives from a 3-0 win a clean sheet only conceding 6 in last 7 showing the defence is tightening up and the fact we can score goals we should all stay at home
We are gradually addressing the long standing lack of quality in the squad ,
Its a bit like putting an Ikea cupboard together with only swedish instructions
be all right when its all assembled though

So you post in Swedish, there was I thinking it was bollocks. ;)

A poor showing, 5 or 6 "starters" still missing, a Make shift defence, a new man in midfield, against a team 3 days ago beat a team we couldn't 4-0 and we do it without getting out of second gear with a clean sheet to boot and STILL the doom merchants aren't happy, I despair, I really do.
Onwards and upwards UTB

What points were Adkins' Southampton on at this stage?

3 wins out of 4. Should have been 4 but for some missed sitters on saturday.

We've finally got our finger out of our arses when it comes to bringing somebody in.

We won very easily last night. We were patient, controlled things, bided our time and wore Fleetwood down. Commendable from the players to keep that patience and discipline and stick to the game plan given the number of knownowts on their backs every time a pass went backwards.

You can't quote a fact to suit your argument then slag someone else when they quote a fact to suit theirs.
Last night was better but certainly not outstanding. Plenty of room for improvement but as you say 1 defeat in 8. Roll on Saturday and let's make it maximum points from these two home games

I wouldn't bother. When losing an argument, this is the guy that makes up lies and pretends you've said things to suit his nonsensical argument.

All new to this site Pete. So basically he's related to the good doctor?

He may as well be.

As an example I said that I expected Portsmouth to challenge next season and he changed this to "I wanted to force Michael Doyle out of our club" and then ignores when you question what the hell he's on about.

I think he confuses himself.

But what is it you despair of?

The fact that most people don't behave like giddy schoolboys when we win a game? The fact people can see it isn't the finished article and dare to say so? The fact it just wasn't a very good game and people are prepared to say so? The fact the "doom merchants" are prepared not to go having a wank on the back of a game like that?

I understand there are those who only see the result and can't understand that winning isn't the only criteria for enjoyment and that playing well might have a part to play but to "despair" of those that have a more balanced view is quite bizarre in my view. Bonkers in fact.

My wife, who knows or cares nothing for football, was surprised I hadn't enjoyed the game more ("it was OK, been to better games") when I got in last night because we'd won 3-0. Like I say, she knows fuck all about the game. I expect better on here. Not from everyone obviously . . . . .
