They are a weird thing cryptic crosswords, like their own language.

For that one, the clue refers to ‘purchase missing uranium’ - its asking you to think of a word that means purchase (BUY) then it is telling you that Uranium is missing - the chemical symbol for Uranium is U so you have to take that away from BUY to be left with BY…
