“Our best ever transfer window”

We are morphing into the 06/07 Warnock side by the week. Stick 11 men behind the ball and shit ourselves when we get over the halfway line.

I was so glad last year to see us taking the game to the oppostition, especially against the top 6, but I really hate the way we just set up and wait for the inevitable this season.

A lot of our current problems stem from that awful transfer window:

  • Didnt replace JOC when we knew he was injured all summer
  • Didnt add two/three players to instantly improve the first 11 (akin to Norwood/Egan in Champ)
  • Signed two lads from Derby for positions that were not a priority - two lads, who are obviously not good enough for the PL
  • Didnt add creativity to the midfield
  • Didnt sign a single midfielder so now CW has no choice but to play a wantaway Lunny
  • Quite obviously missed out on most of our main targets (Cash, Swift etc)

How on earth Wilder thought it was the best window he's ever had is just bizarre.

Right let’s go threw your list.

We value O’Connell at 40 million...would take 30 mill to replace him but the problem is his position is a specialist role.
would probably take a year to learn it and develop a partnership with his left back.

Average PL players are at least 30 million..maybe 40 million.

Creativity in midfield at PL level costs 50 millon.
Average PL midfielders coat 30 to 40 million.

Our transfer targets were all Championship players with ZERO PL experience...so all would gambles.
The asking prices were inflated to 15 million plus.

So your suggestion is to save 10 million on the Derby defenders. Assume your also want to save 5 million by not signing Burke and instead spend over 150 million on what we’ve already spent. So you want out net spend over the Summer to be 150 minus 15 plus the Brewster transfer = over 150 mill expenditure.

Bearing in mind we’ve just broken our transfer record by buying one of the hottest young strikers in the game.
We’ve also bought one of the hottest young goalkeepers in the game. Brewster and Ramsdale are still kids and should improve over many years.

Also we’re in a covid crisis so I’m sure you agree that spending 150 million a season would be madness.
Many might reply that we don’t need to spend that amount because we can buy free transfers...however there’s no such thing as a “free” transfer
The agent factors in the salary negotiation that there no transfer so they justify why £200K a week is a “reasonable” salary expectation.

I just can't get my head around how quickly we've gone from swashbuckling attack at will to Wilder saying "what am I meant to do, open up and let it get to 6s and 7s" when we've just lost 4-1. I'm glad we've got this international break. He needs to maybe take a few days off and re-evaluate.

So are you saying the transfer window was good enough? I dont think you are. Yes, we can't spend at the levels Chelsea etc do, but not being able to afford top dollar players does not give the manager/club a free pass on the business that was done - as based on what we have seen so far, it wasnt good enough. The spending we did do has not kicked us on as a PL side.
