This looks like it’s actually happening, so has become worth thinking about. I have mixed feelings.

1- I’m not a huge fan of Cannon as a player from what I’ve seen (total eye test, probably only 3 or 4 games). To me, he doesn’t stand out though at 22 he should improve. But whatever you think of him he’s not a £10m player, especially for a championship club.

2- The forward line now looks stacked, possibly too stacked as I’d imagine some players will not get enough a game time. Hamer, BBD, Cannon, Moore, Campbell, Oné, O’Hare, Rak-Sakyi and Brooks is serious talent.

3- £10m! Whilst we’re in the championship! We’re no longer plucky little Sheffield United. It’s encouraging the new owners are willing to spend that much and back Wilder (I still have fear that they’ll sack him as soon as we have a bad run).
Who do you believe is around the level of a £10m player? A lot of people seem seem to share this opinion but given that players like Anthony cost £85m I'm not sure what everyone thinks we're going to get for that sort of money? It's really not a lot of money in football today.

Keep the faith. There's obviously plan. Looks like we've got 2 quality signings so far. Which gives us extra bodies bit even add quality
Oh I don't disagree with BBD & Cannon.
And CW has said 5.
Which presumably is 2 more loans plus JJK permanent.

I wasn't expecting a RB so JJK is a bit surprising.

The last 2 need to be a Souttar quality replacement

and probably a midfielder.

Vini's fitness & yellows bother me.
Hamer is bound to get a 2 match and a 3 match ban before the season is over - that's a quarter of the remaining games.
Davies is quite injury-prone.
And of course we've lost Blaster.
Shackleton doesn't seem to be available when needed.
And Peck is getting pushed sooner than ideal.

I hope CW isn't thinking of sacrificing a CB in order to get 2 midfielders.
Anyway , he seems very upbeat in his interview this morning !

I think someone like BBD is who I’d be happy with us spending £10m on.

Antony was never worth £85m. Man U are renowned for overspending and Antony is the worst case of it.

It’s a lot of money for a championship club.

Both Cannon and Kenny have been at Everton so I assume Jamie Hoyland has recommended them. If we can't take the advice of the recruitment team then what's the point of having one?

Even taking inflation into account this will be our highest transfer fee ever paid whilst in the 2nd tier although in relative terms the fee for Beattie was huge at that time.

Thinking back you can't fault McCabe for putting some serious wedge in to try and get straight back up that season. His only fault was giving it to that clown Robson.

Beattie got the highest ever Championship wage at the time (£40k a week) and we had the likes of Hendrie and Ugo on £20k plus.
I used to go ont Kop for 17s/6p. Prices go up. Let’s just be happy we are evolving as a club and going for it instead of limping into PL in 2nd place with a half decent championship squad that will get annihilated every game.

Missed the point completely and absolutely nowhere in that post do I say I'm not happy. I'm very happy with how things are progressing atm.

Just pointing out it's the biggest fee we've ever paid in the 2nd tier which shows the owners are happy to make that final push for promotion this season.

Believe it or not……they were saying how he loves it so much at Stoke and the fans love him too.
With many suggesting he’d rather be at Stoke on loan than Sheff Utd or Sunderland.

Talk about deluded…why would he want to be at a little club like Stoke involved in a relegation battle.
Surely he’d want to advance his career?

Yeah they seemed to have fallen for the old "every player who plays for us loves the club as much as I do" thing. We're also a shit club to play for Screenshot_20250120-191232.webp

If people don’t know…….Rifleman is a Middlesbrough fan….so he’s talking from experience regards Wilder.
He’s unpopular amongst Boro fans.
Wrong again, dunno why this line keeps being trotted out. I haven’t liked wilder since sandwichgate ……….: thanks 👍

Kin ‘ell
Even allowing for “prices go(ing) up” that was a tad pricy 🤔

Maybe. Probably not. If Wilder either has a bad run or has a difference in views from the owners he could be sacked.

It’s a thing new owners sometimes do.
Isn’t that something all owners have always done?

Yeah I bet he loves having a different manager every other month!

A pattern emerges....

With Tom Cannons transfer fee reputedly being £10 million plus add-ons up to £13 million and some of us raising an eye brow at this I thought I would have a little look at comparable players and their records.

These stats relate to all football played professionally since they were in the U18's

Tom Cannon, Age 22, games played 55, goals scored 73, 1.33 goals per game, Transfer Fee £10-13m
Jay Stansfield, Age 22, games played 56, goals scored 76, 1.36 goals per game, Transfer Fee £15m
Liam Delap, Age 21 (22 in Feb), games played 51, goals scored 68, 1.33 goals per game, Transfer Fee £20m
Cameron Archer, Age 23, games played 44, goals scored 54, 1.23 goals per game, Transfer Fee £15m

Perhaps it's not as bad a fee as I initially thought. It's definitely the going rate, or just under, based on my small sample.
Is that XG goals per game?
