While foolish to say, he's not wrong. I can't recall a season where our fans haven't moaned – even when we were promoted in 2006 we had a fair number.
It is an interesting one this isn't it. I would say that it is a problem of expectation, and our expectation is greater than our ability to deliver that expectation.
I shall be bold here. As half a Yorkie, we are not known for shall we say not being honest or as some might say 'blunt' (no pun intended re Blades). Given the size of Sheffield as a place, its football history, both us and
them have quite under achieved, certainly since WWII.
As described in another thread, it wasn't until the late 1970's we finished below 11th in the second tier. Yep better than Man U, Everton Man City, Wednesday. Only Arsenal could better that. But as a club we were probably like my academic skills, quite good but never finished top or won sod all, and in time I think that started to become a bit of a sore with fans.
In the 60's and early 70's when I was a kid, teams I likened us to in ability/support were West Ham, Wolves, Norwich, Stoke yet they all won things (usually the League Cup). And what did we do? Bugger all, that's what! For something like 20 bloody years we never got past the 4th round of the FA bleedin cup. For Pete's sake! It was awful. I think it was DB that broke that hoodoo. So if you build that frustration up one can see how the 'Moaning Minnie' brigade/perceptions started. We just under achieve.
And then we had the Hassall years that took us down, down, deeper and down and only Uncle Reg addressed it. I remember standing on the Kop that Spring evening when we died and got relegated to the third division. It was awful. We'd lost I think to bloody Blackburn Rovers 1-0.
So when you put our early history, the size of the city, the size of the fan base, our inability to win absolutely nothing for so long (we haven't won a knock out competition featuring non South Yorkshire sides since 1925 - a frigging disgrace) I can understand why so many fans feel the need to moan.
I'd say we are a Championship sized club that needs to make the step up. But at this rate we are in danger of becoming the Rovers, Park Avenue or County (Bristol, Bradford, Notts) to our city rivals, and that to me is not acceptable.
