If he's making the announcement after the final whistle someone needs to stay and pass it on, we can't rely on the Scunthorpe fans, they could make anything up.

I'd volunteer myself but I always visit my Mum on a Sunday afternoon. :)

He always struck me as a man out of his depth.

That may very well be the case, but the man gave it a crack and fair play to him. Sometimes you have to try something different, I'm sure McCabe knew Jim's knowledge (or lack of) but the Prince trusted him and that's that. I'm sure things have not helped with his illness over the past few months.

Having been brought up on the plastic razzmatazz of American sport I think that Jim fundamentally had no understanding of the depth of feeling that football engenders in England.

It matters to us. It really matters to us. Occupies our thoughts for days or weeks before a game. Reduces us to bags of nerves in the match day build up. The result will make or ruin a weekend. Utter ecstasy or forum meltdown.

And as for the local rivalries - as heartfelt, meaningful and intense as anything you will see short of full scale civil disorder.

So engaging in twater battles while wearing a giant sponge hand and a 'Go Blades' tee shirt was never going to work out in the long term. He gave it a go but never had his finger on the pulse of Sheffield United Football Club.

Does this mean Phipps has had his chips?
Whatever he quips I've always liked Phipps.
Or will Phipps just reiterate how in the transfer market we were pipped?
Be classy Blades, at the end don't give Phipps no lips
I'm here all week - for bookings text foxy

Just a lazy stereotype I'm afraid. Americans have plenty of passion for their sport.

Maybe Jim's going to be modelling the new home/away kits for next season?

A little later than usual in announcing them.

To be fair, he's roughly the same shape as most of us who'd be wearing them so a perfect model really ;)

I'm just imagining the end of Mike Bassett where they all think he's going to resign only to turn round and shout 'four more years' with a fist pump.

No they're saving that for the out of contract players ;)

Maybe a stereotype but based on personal experience. I once went to a Chicago RedHawks game via a sports bar full of 'fans' wearing all the replica gear.

When the time came to leave and get to the stadium about 10% left the bar the rest were going to watch on TV. The stadium was much less than half full and had zero away support of course. No atmosphere either. You can't tell me the vast majority really gave a shit what happened. They didn't.

I'll defend Phipps all day long.

He had the most undesirable job of all. Acting as a buffer zone between a volatile fanbase and bullshitting ownership.

We slate him for not understanding football or the club, but he tried his best to engage with us, he immersed himself into a completely alien culture. He didn't just sit on his arse tweeting, he met real people, real fans and spoke to them, drank with them, even travelled with them.

At one point he was communicating with the supporters on a very regular basis. Angry, abusive ones fueled even more by the clubs worst performance in over 3 decades.
I'll tell you what, I get fucking depressed talking to Unitedites every day and I AM one.

So yes, I'll feel a bit sad when his says his goodbyes. Sad because under better circumstances his relationship with us could've worked out better. Sad because despite everything, his affinity to our club is genuine.

I wish him nothing but the best from here on.

For me JP may have got some things wrong, may have been undone at times by his lack of football pedigree and history but I always felt he was sincere, trying to do his best in a difficult position and committed.

One thing I do hope is that this is a business decision and not a major health issue. I wish him well and would want to say thanks for trying.

A caricature.

He's the only one who seemed to genuinely care from the non McCabe £2 split. As so often happens with a minority of Blades fans, he puts his heart and soul into in and gets slagged off and abused by people who haven't got a clue what he did or didn't do. These fans will obviously now moan that there is no communication from the board. United's problems certainly aren't/weren't down to Jim Phipps I know that. I hope his health improves and that he continues to support the Blades either from afar or at the Lane. Once a Blade......

I went for a piss at Coventry last week and there were as many 'Blades' trying to smash up the concourse as there were watching the game .Hes right lazy stereotyping ,many Americans are incredibly passionate about sport ,try travelling 900 miles for an away game taking 4 days off work ,or even 3000 miles to London for a league game.
Jim just struck me as quite a lonely character who wanted to be everyones friend and unfortunately many English wankers don't get that and would rather insult someone.

oh dear - moaning about fans - just waiting now for the hornets nest............

Social media is not a place for direct communication with fans.

.

I disagree in a general sense, but JP had obviously not has any social media training before inviting fans to follow him on Twitter and FB. It's necessary to keep a bit of distance and not get in trivial public arguments with fans. He should have posted far less, and there are some issues that he shouldn't have got involved with at all. Overall he came across as a decent Blades spokesman, we could have done far worse. If he is to quit, I hope his successor will stay on social media, and make use of the lessons that JP has learned

Concourse shenanigans will hopefully stop once United have a team worth getting back to your seat for.

And those (minority) of fans would never had slagged him if we were winning and playing well.the poor sod was there to be shot at this season, some people have to have a go at somebody and he was the nearest to the board that they could vent there spleen at, all the best for your future Jim, hope you return this time next season to enjoy our turkish promotion party

Correct ...... the idiots on the concourse at Coventry were creating their own entertainment because the feckless, spineless, over-paid footballer impersonators in our away kit on the pitch were a load of crap !! Again !!

I think the three transfer windows statement won't have done Jim any favours.
I find it hard to believe that a Co-chairman of a company would make a statement like this without the agreement of the other Co-chairman. Whatever you think of jp and McCabe, they are both very successful business people who, I'm sure, will know how businesses need to sing from the same hymn sheet.

Or maybe I'm too naive....

Bang on. An honest fool. A good man.

I will miss him at the Lane, he is a genuine man who did much more than just send a few tweets. At Morecambe he came up to me outside the ground asking for my opinions despite not knowing me from Adam. The bad news is that he may have listened to me and this explains our poor season!
