Neil Warnock
Kevin Blackwell
Talks about his time at the Blades.
The squash guy... a Sheffield Wednesday fan but an ambassador for Sheffield United.
Um, what?
Neil Warnock, Kevin Blackwell, bibbedy-bobbedy-boo
Put them together and what have ya got..
A self-centred ego-maniac and an half decent bricklayer.
Straight in at No.1

I agree with Blackwell's first point, they're adult footballers, not kids. The time for working on weaknesses has passed. Thanks for posting this.
A couple of notable points from Blackwell:
1. "You got to know a player's strengths and weaknesses...it's no use asking a player to do something he's no good at and then having a go at him for not doing it."
One could argue that's tantamount to asking Blackwell to manage (weakness?) rather than coach (strength?).
2. Thinly veiled dig at Adkins: "I came to the pre-season game against Newcastle and they {Blades} had 42 pros. If you can't find 11 out of 42 it's (shakes head), you know what I mean...." Biggs challenges this and suggests it might be "better to find 11 out of 25." Blackwell: "Well you've got more options, that's for sure."
This is probably no great surprise, given Adkins and Warnock/Blackwell are almost polar opposites in approach to management:
Adkins: science and stats-focused, hard-working and hands-on, generally considered and diplomatic, uncritical of referees, overtly and, some would say, superficially positive
Warnock: disregards sports science, works Thursday-Saturday (as he did during his time at SUFC), does his best work 5 mins before KO and at half-time, emotional and impulsive, blames referee for almost every defeat.
It's an interesting interview. Blackwell comes across as a knowledgable coach and limited communicator - probably why he is such a good foil for Warnock.
Good interviews, got to respect Warnock for what he's done in the game and what he did for us. I also like Blackwell, nice bloke and a good coach.
What did annoy me in the Blackwell interview was when he said "30,000" Wednesdayites. Drives me crazy when people say they get 30K every week. just the other day I met some bloke and he asked where I was from, who I supported then said "oh Wednesday are a big club, they get 30,000 every game".....no they don't!! Just cus they have a big stadium doesn't mean they fill the thing.
1. "You got to know a player's strengths and weaknesses...it's no use asking a player to do something he's no good at and then having a go at him for not doing it."
Interestingly, Warnock also advocated giving all the players a fresh start when you come into a club.
Good point. He also signed Leon Britton, the most unsuitable cm for a long ball team ever and I've still no idea what he thought he was going to do with Evans when he tended to prefer 451.It's great rhetoric, but isn't that exactly what he did with Billy Sharp before ultimately selling him?
Being a Blade you'd expect him to. Has he not done it Rotherham? That maybe what he says in public but that's never how he's actually operated. Which is fine, btw. He had very clear ideas of who he wanted out when he took over at the Lane.

Lol, I should know that, I've read his book too. Good read but he does come across as someone who holds a grudge for a long time.I'm not very up on it, actually. I'd be interested to know.
To be fair, in his biography he says he was convinced he was going to get rid of Murphy the second he arrived but Murphy's application persuaded him otherwise. He was pretty ruthless with Ribeiro though, as I think someone alluded to earlier today.

A much better example – a signing where you wondered if Blackwell had ever seen him play.
Keith Gillespie's book does not paint Blackwell in a good light in terms of man management, particularly in relation to his handling of Sharp and Cotterill. I can't ever remember a United player saying a good word about him actually.[/QU
I was going to make the same point re Blackwell and Gillespie. I'm sure Gillespie wasn't the easiest the manage but Warnock managed it when he brought him in and he did wonders and played a decent part of the promotion squad as well as doing well in the Premier League. My take on Warnock and Blackwell is this: Blackwell is the tactician but essentially not gifted in man management. Warnock is the opposite. Put them together and it works really well. Warnock still did well without Blackwell but not as well as he did with us. Blackwell has been indifferent as we al know. I remember seeing Shaun Derry by fluke once in Nottingham and he said that Warnock thought tactics were a type of sweet! He did add his motivation of players was second to none.
If Warnock goes somewhere without Blackwell next season I'd have my doubts, especially if its a Northern club as he is Southern based and will be leaving the day to day to his assistant.
I still like both of them and we owe them a lot. Saying that I have lost respect for Warnock as a Blade, after he flirted with the Pigs job.
Sorry, I've been trying to hold back but I'm in a belligerent mood today. He's fucking useless as a manager. He can coach, I'll give him that, but his man management and recruitment is truly woeful. He has no idea how to run a club successfully and every club he's managed has gone down after he left. His scattergun approach cost our club a huge amount of wasted money and our place in the championship. Speed, and then Adams, had as little chance of sorting out the shit he left as Adkins has had with what Clough left him.Made this point higher up but cocked it up! Re Gillespie. I'll add this from before. I can't believe Blackwell criticising Adkins when Adkins record is so much better than Blackwell it's untrue! Listening to the Blackwell interview he's even more arrogant than Warnock, but at least Warnock has the promotions to back it up! Blackwell should stick to been a coach and leave it there! When he talks about management appointments they will have been in League 2 I would have thought, That said, I wrote him a letter once actually supporting him and I have to say he did write a long letter back, and that was nice, but my views on him remain that he is a limited manager, but a very good coach.

And his interview shows his lack of professionalism and integrity.
