But Wilder is as big a Blade as you and me and everybody on here, it's in his blood.
I wouldn't take the United job if I was a successful football manager right now. It'd ruin my reputation because the board evidently don't have a clue. I'm sure it's tempting to him but he'd be a fool to do it in my eyes.
Still, maybe he'll be given a more favourable set of circumstances than Adkins was.

Yes perhaps Adkins has promised to take his shit with him.

Sounds to me like CW is favorite for the job, and we'll be getting a director of football.
Why it has to be worded like a 14year old girls txt message I will never know.
If you notice each and every one of his announcements have been in this style. A cynic might conclude that the bloke is narrowing the already slim possibility that someone from the club might be able to trace his usual wording habits from emails/letters etc.

Same here, from the second most confused person. Nigel had turned the corner imho.

Or maybe he's a footballer or ex-footballer?

I remember Chris had left us to go to Rotherham in 1992 but I was amazed when I saw him a few rows in front of me in the Everton v Blades match in May 1993, he was standing up with his and passionately singing for the Blades. In 1995 I played cricket against him and he asked for my thoughts on the Blades for the 1994-95 season when I was telling him that I am a Blades fan. After the penalty shoot out win against Coventry in March 1998 he ran onto the pitch with other Blades fans to celebrate the victory despite that he was a Bradford player at the time (Steve Thompson signed him a week or two later)

Yeah Chris Wilder lets tick that bladeyness box. Warnock in as DOF if he turns Rovrum down at the end of the season?

We can go for a hat trick and get Micky Adams in as U21's coach as well.

So was Mickey Adams mate :(

If I was Wilder I would NOT touch us with a bargepole. A club as dis-functional as it is demoralised from top to bottom, boardroom to pitch. Stay where you are Chris and flourish. We've become toxic, it's not worth the hassle.

Wilder would deffo take the job IMO...if offered...I've played footie against his teams, spoke to the bloke...he's 'a big Blade' as they say...no disrespect to Northampton but you're always going to want to manage 'your club'.

Would he risk his growing reputation working for these muppets though?

If it is Chris Wilder then best of luck to him, he's got a pretty good record with two clubs but that wasn't enough for Adkins unfortunately. Hopefully he can be our saviour. I don't doubt his abilities (I still don't doubt Adkins) but I do doubt the people above him making the decisions!
Best of luck to Adkins too.
A few years ago he was really going places and now it's fallen apart a bit. I hope he chooses his next club much more wisely next time and doesn't let anymore muppets take him for a ride like this lot.

I think for a manager in Wilder's position it's win-win.
If he fails, it's the club's fault, impossible task etc and it's back to L2....if he succeeds/makes a go of it and the fans get behind the team it's a big step up in terms of recognition in the game and he'll be doing it at his club.

IMO I'd see the appointment as a sign that we'll be playing most of the youth team next season....with ( to be positive) some cracking players from non-league/L2 Wilder might be able to tempt here...

There should barely be a player in those leagues we couldn't tempt anyway. It's just a matter of picking the ones who are up to the task. Not our strong suit that.

If this is true (I've not heard either way) it throws up many questions about the club. The plan this year was relative austerity whilst trying to maintain a promotion push. The Prince and KM didn't see adding significantly to the already steep net outlay, as the approach to take. We went more or less with what we had, and hoped that an inspirational managerial change would get a team to perform above the sum of its parts. Next season was the season we invested in transfer fees and wages for players that could get us promoted and competitive in the Championship. Or, ideally, to completely rebuild a promotion squad. So the current scenario had already been planned for and understood by all parties as a very likely outcome. Adkins has shown a level of frustration at an inability to get certain loan signings completed during the August and January loan windows, and has asked for the behind the seasons management to be improved. He has also tried to expand the scouting network and asked for further recruitment in this area in order to scout more extensively in new markets. The academies potential demise has also been pointed out to KM - see other thread. The op points to a director of football being appointed, and this wouldn't surprise me, whether Adkins is still at the club or not (given his criticisms of current staff). It should be noted, however, that KM has had extremely bad experiences with 'football appointments' in senior administrative roles: it would be unwise to say too much, except trusts have been broken and the club's finances mismanaged. They have proved very costly and imo caused a reticence to go down that route again. I think it would be fair to say KM hasn't had a positive experience since DD, and its proved expensive to trust the football 'experts'.

My concerns if Adkins has been sacked or resigned:
The club is failing to modernise off the pitch, they see a managerial change as the panacea to all structural/ staffing issues at the club..

Current staff in charge of football operation are woeful, and this may not change if their leading critic goes instead..

Scouting and academy systems are not seen as areas of huge concern, (despite Adkins and fan criticism)..

The finances are not being in place to pay large (by league one standards) transfer fees and attractive wages to young players (see Cuveliar, Baxter and Adams type signings).

There has been a public effort to show a united front between the Prince and KM. I wont be convinced until the transfer window opens.

A dissonance between the likely playing styles of the next permanent manager and the academy squads. Also the way we have started to play this season and the next managers style

Who the board pick as the director of football (if Adkins has had input will the next manager approve?)

At least it could be argued, Bladeyness aside that Wilder is a manager on the way up.

Adkins has now 2 failed attempts with us and Reading.

Wilder on the other hand turned Notthampton from relegation contenders to promotion runaways in little over a season. And realistically, how far can he go with Northampton?

For all our 'troubles', taking over a team with 18,000 gates in league one is a no brainier for someone who backs their own methods.

.

Failing in your last 2 jobs equates to not getting a team promoted within a season, with no resource to do so.

It's this continual short termism that's turned us to the worst state we've been in > 125 years.

Fuck me :(

UTB

No resources? He's added about 50k per week to the wage bill. We've recruited all 6 signings from leagues above and one of them cost a fee of 300-500k.

Some teams in this division probably don't even have a 50k wage bill overall.

Most teams won't spend any fees.

Honest question, what is your expectation in terms of fees available and wages for new signings to get out of League One?

Remember we are behind Burton, Walsall, Gillingham, Millwall, Bradford and Barnsley.

We already had 49 pros available to the cause who, minus one, had got us to 5th the previous year.

Unless you are comparing us just to Wigan alone, I would not, IMHO. see resourcing as a valid argument.

Are you taking into account the people he's got off the wage bill?

As alcoblade says, we now class failure as one season and the sack. What a joke.

Good job the same wasn't done with Warnock. Or Bassett.

After his first full season in charge Bassett got us up.

Warnock was at a higher more natural level for the club.

Sheffield United being in League One is akin to Man U being in the Championship. Anything less than automatic promotion as an aim in unacceptable.

Having us 8th, 18 off 2nd and 8 off 6th quite rightly calls into question your suitability for the role.

If we were in the Chanpionship it would be different and consolidation would be acceptable. But we're not, we're well below the level we should be.

It's also not just failure is it Pete? It the lack of achievement in any parts of the role which is cause for concern. Nothing is 'coming together'. It will be a blank slate for him as much as a new bloke. Apart the fact we already know he's not a good judge of a signing. The new bloke at least might be.
