Warnock was recently asked on SheffieldLive about a return to the Blades and responded "never say never", I'm not advocating he returns as manager but I definitely think he should be considered for a return in a role similar to the one successfully fulfilled by the late Derek Dooley.

Characters like Warnock are few and far between in football these days and he comes with a wealth of experience, in my opinion now is the time for Warnock to make his return.

He's nothing like Derek Dooley. Dooley didn't seek publicity, got on with the job and knew when his time was up.

Why would we want a DOF who was simply a motivator? If that's the criteria from the past Bassett would be a far better choice.

In any event DD wasn't a DOF. Ever.

There's already a space for his tractor.
I'm sure One day be it manager or not he'll have another 'relationship' with the club.

Just because he's old doesn't mean he'd be a good DoF. If Warnock comes back it has to be as manager.

No.

Totally agree Director of Football, Team Coach load of bollocks
Can we just stick with Manager,Coach,Trainer with the Manager being the top man
I think both systems can work (although I prefer manager at the top) but it's about if those people are right for those roles. Most people on here seem to think Warnock was a good motivator and good with less funds, but when he had a budget he often wasted it on players like, Akinbiyi, Horsfield and no doubt some more. Not that all of the signings were bad but if he was DoF he'd probably only sanction the signing of strikers!

Maybe if he cared about the club - rather than himself - then his response would have been something like, "Sheffield United have a manager and I wish him all the best in getting them promoted."

Trouble is with Warnock is, he would never let any manager just get on with it. And then whenever things go wrong, it will always be everyone else's fault and not his!

Our current manager will not work with a Director of Football

It's a simple enough game, it really is. It's just being made needlessly more complicated by the modern age unfortunately.
And i'd agree... however, we have owners and a board that seem to know best when it comes to football matters, so a DoF would perhaps bring some sort of sanity to the footballing decisions.

We've seen what can happen when the manager is the top man with Clough. Not all managers are responsible.

I can't see that being the outcome at a club like ours though unfortunately. The role would just be used as another layer of bullshit to justify the boards actions. In which case Warnock and anyone else with self-respect wouldn't take it on.

I mentioned something similar on here after watching it, though it luckily went under the radar given the reaction to your post. While I'm not convinced NW has the temperament (or restraint) for this sort of intermediary role, I do think it would be in our best interest to get someone with a decent understanding of football into a Dooley-esque role, as the current experience within the current board is solely McCabe's – which has given us, as we've been painfully shown in recent years, mostly awful results.

which is not what Dooley did and isn't what the OP was suggesting either

A director of football ?. . . . Absolutely not.
A dynamic and visably active CEO?. . Most fuckin definitely.

Seriously cos I Iz a bit fik. What does a DOF actually do or what is he supposed to do? Signings? Contracts? Bonus schemes, negotiations with agents? Anything contractual that is football player related? I thought that was a Brannigan job when Clough was here?
