I thought Hammond had a see-saw game. He'd play a great pass across to Done. then an amateurish hospital ball to give away possession. He'd get over and close down his man which he didn't do last time I saw him, then he'd 'close down' in the manner that BergenBlade pointed out.
I can cope with him until the end of the season, but he's 33 for God's sake. I wouldn't even have him on a year's deal. A blend of youth and experience is a good combination, but if experience's legs are shagged then it's a waste of fucking time, innit?
Whiteman made a couple of mistakes but had a very promising full debut. Great to see another young 'un coming through. What I will say is that there were a couple times in the game where he looked a little lost, almost panicky. Call it nerves or whatever, but I felt what the lad needed was for his captain to have a word and put a hand on his shoulder. That bit of leadership to calm his head and he'd have had a 10/10 game. We ain't got that in this side. We need a proper leader on the pitch.
Let's be honest, the first assist was a product of the ball not sitting up for Whiteman to shoot. Passing to Brayford was a back up.
That said, hit them like he does for the reserves and he'll score a few
We have a man who has captained Southampton to back to back promotions and captained Leicester to the Premier League.
We have a man who is captain of his national team
We have our own captain
We have Billy blade who would run through brick walls for the club.
We have the beard who shows honest commitment.
We have the combative, energetic Chris Basham
We have Matt Done whose enthusiasm is (or should be) infectious.
And we still don't have enough leadership in the team? I'd argue that perhaps the issue is with the other players if they need more leadership than that.
I'm not sure how your points about Brayford, Basham and Done mean that they have good leadership qualities, but I take your points about the others. However, as I said, it needs to be shown on the pitch. Saturday was a better performance, but let's not forget the occasions this season where Sheffield United have looked like a team of complete strangers.
Doyle was a crap player but a good captain. He knew how to rally the troops and try to stop people's heads dropping. I've not seen a great deal of that leadership quality on the pitch this season. I have, however, seen us losing 1-0 to Burton and not even talking to each other whilst there was a break in play (someone off injured; lack of communication during the break spoke volumes to me). Times like that are where we need our captain, the captain of Canada, the former captain of Southampton or our Billy Blade to rally the troops and give everyone a kick up the backside.

Players like Drinkwater and Hammond are there to provide a platform for others to show their skills. They often look shit because they're running around covering and screening, holding positions to allow others forward. It's primarily about what they do off the ball, rather than their skills on the ball. Most teams have one and they tend to be undervalued by supporters.I was watching the Leicester-Newcastle game last night and thought Hammond had been recalled as I watched Danny Drinkwater essentially do exactly that for 90 minutes – mixed bag on his passing, missed tackles, but lots of effort and ground covered. I was amazed to then see him given the motm award, when Kante next to him seemed to do everything far better. Maybe Adkins is right on the "unnoticed work" front, because I thought Drinkwater was one of their poorer players – let alone the top performer on the night.
In Hammond's defence, I think Rochdale and Burton were two of our main displays of spinelessness this season and both occurred when he was banned. Rochdale, we played well first half but as soon as the going got tough, we looked like scared little schoolgirls not taking any responsibility. Like you say at Burton, leadership was lacking. I don't think Hammond lacks that ability. It's his lack of mobility which is an issue and Adkins needs to decide whether he is willing to live with that in exchange for the leadership he does bring to the table.
My point about Brayford, Basham and Done was that whilst they are not vocal, they are triers who somewhat lead by example or at least don't need others to tell them to work hard and compete. If some other players showed that off their own back, perhaps we wouldn't be questioning the leaders as much?
It is closing down like this that makes me worried that he'll be A) signed permanently B) on very high wages and C) on a two year deal.
He's got experience and strength and is not bad in the air, but we have to be careful about spending a lot of money on players whose physique are on the decline.

I can't. I lack foresight.Seeing a pattern here. No issue with having the sort of player in our side. My issue is the bit where Hammond is 33 and he doesn't cover a great deal of ground as it stands.
Now imagine him in a year?...
I can't. I lack foresight.
He might be knackered like some players are at that age or he might be like Scholes and Giggs and go on forever.
If we don't sign Hammond, we'll need someone like him.
You mean 34 year old Doyle, who some would have back.Otherwise it'll be "we miss Hammond" "Hammond wasn't great but at least he had bottle" "we lack leadership without Hammond" etc. Just like we've had this season with Doyle.

It will indeed. We need fresh faces of decent quality in the Summer to halt this flow of weird, misplaced, misguided nostalgia which appears to have spread throughout some of our fanbase.
If I hear anyone say we miss Collins next season, I'll piss in their Bovril.

So of the starters Che and Billy are the ones to get less.
Did whoever compiles the YP team see all the teams play that day?Maybe so but he was the best player in Hammond's position for the Blades on the day, and apparently whoever compiles the Yorkshire Post 'Yorkshire' team of the week felt he was the best player in that position of all the Yorkshire teams of the weekend.
Did whoever compiles the YP team see all the teams play that day?
So you point out that the YP choose Hammond as the player to occupy his own position in an imaginary team, to what aim, to conflict with mine and most other fans on here who actually saw the game in person s view that he was the 3rd lowest rated starting player?
Well I will and most others who actually attended the game take the ratings of those who actually attended and go with them. Even if i don't agree with them (which in this case it seems I do) against some tin pot Leeds sports journalist who gets his information from possibly one source without actually attending the game.
unless of course you can point out that he got his information from a larger contingent who actually attended the game?
By the way, who did he have playing best in Flynn s position and from how many sources?
My opening on the subject was a disagreement about how well he played. so there is no problem with that. And as such their is no problem with someone backing up their opinion either. You may well wish to accept the opinion of the YP bloke I would never accept the opinion of someone who did not witness it so I will take the majority verdict of those on here who actually went. It may well conflict with my own sometimes. when that happens I have no problem accepting that. I think that is why so many get annoyed at Barney He comments on situations through hearsay. You claim you know nothing but if that is true I would still rather take your opinion over his because you were there. To add balance Boo. I thought he played alright but of course I Know Nowt (no really I don't, I did go by the way). I was simply pointing out that someone else had them in their team of the week. No idea if YP journalist was there but I imagine the Star reporter was and maybe he passed on his opinion.
"to what aim, to conflict with mine and most other fans on here who actually saw the game in person s view".
Surely that is allowed on a football fan forum, or do we have to all go with the opinions of the loudest or even the majority for fear of being singled out for having a different opinion. Just sayin' Boo.![]()
It Roy of the Rovers was real life, Leicester would get a whole load of injuries, recall Hammond with 1 game to go. He's made captain for the last game, they win the league and the photo of him lifting the trophy is on the back page of every newspaper in the land.
