Retaining too many of them could and probably would prolong this current situation as most of them would revert to their usual performance levels, but by being selective when it comes to who we do retain and only keeping the right characters we're protecting ourselves from that situation. At the moment McEveley should probably be kept, Flynn possibly on a heavily appearance based one year contract. That's about it though. In fact there aren't even that many left who are out of contract. Collins and Baxter get fucked off and suddenly the list looks a lot shorter. We'll still have to shift the likes of J Wallace, Harris, Freeman and Scougall though.

It's not that bad. J Wallace and Harris are out of contract, and inexplicably Scougall is in demand.

I will be surprised if Freeman plays for us again.

,he was playing very well up to the hand ball at Spurs ,.

This gets said a lot but isn’t strictly true. Oldham at home he got done far too easily to allow Jonathan Forte to score. MK Dons at home he gave away an unnecessary free kick allowing them to nick a last minute winner. Plymouth at home in the FA cup he gave away a daft penalty. The cracks were appearing before the Spurs game although that seemed like it finished him and he became a walking disaster for the following months culminating in Brayford suffering a serious injury after bailing out another of his blunders v Swindon in the playoffs. I was dismayed by the fact he got a new deal and even more so that he started the season in the team. But credit where it’s due. Since returning from his broken toe (December v Coventry I think) he’s been on the whole, pretty solid and one of our better performers. That for me though is not enough to warrant a new deal. This squad needs a huge overhaul and the only out of contract player I would renew is George Long. We have Kieron Wallace and the lad Kelly who can play left back. With the money saved on McEveley and Harris’ wages we ought to be able to go out and sign one really good first choice left back using those kids as cover.

I suspect next season's captain is already at the club. I took special notice of Dean Hammond yesterday and he was very vocal, encouraging and supportive to his team mates. (take note Collins). Also thought he had his best game for us yesterday, much helped by having progressive and energetic midfielders around him.

I agree Hammond was pretty good. He still gave the ball away a bit but he made some good tackles and played the odd forward pass. Especially impressive after discovering he was unwell. And to top it all, unbelievably, he didn’t get booked!

Plus the loans of Edgar, Baptiste, Hammond and Sammon expiring.

Still 9 there who are out of contract in the summer that I think we should be moving on. I’m sure Sammon will also go. I suspect Hammond will stay but not sure about Edgar and Baptiste Then bring in 6 or 7 of better quality and we might have a chance. If possible also move on Freeman, Scougall, McNulty and possibly Coutts and Woolford. Then we’ll have a small squad that will have room to get the U21s training with them and becoming involved. Adkins spoke of the importance of that on Saturday and I agree.

Unless it’s against Bradford’s Mark Marshall who tore him a new one.

The exception proves the rule :-)

He got booked very early on, looked certain to be sent off but survived - and their supply down that side was shut down (in part thanks to Sammon).

These days I expect him to win his 1v1s.

And in part because he got subbed.

I think he has improved over the last 3 months but over a period of nearly 2 seasons now, I don't think he's done enough to warrant a new deal.

Even if we get rid of all the out of contract players we're still over budget. We will still make a loss.

Who do you think is going to fund the loss? Who is going to pay transfer fees for the quality of player we need? Until we get the rest of the big earners like Coutts and Brayford off the wage bill there is little room to manoeuvre. I can't see us signing more than three permanent players.

This is where we find out whether we have any serious investment still to come. If we are able, it absolutely has to be quality over quantity. There's no point in paying decent wages to players who are on a par with, or only marginally better than a low paid young developing player. As we have Wallace and Kelly coming up in that position, McEveley's wage could be used elsewhere regardless of whether we can afford a better left back or have to prioritise elsewhere.

I'm not convinced Wallace is ready yet to be a first team regular and I know absolutely nothing about Kelly. I doubt we'll find anyone better on a free. Could use Woolford I suppose.

I thought Wallace did well when he was in the team before and he got forward and chipped in with a couple of assists. I don't know how good Kelly is but if he's on the bench now, Adkins must think he has something about him. I think there's currently little between Wallace and McEveley but Wallace will be on less money and is young enough to improve.

I'm not convinced by Wallace either, but better to sign one real quality replacement for McEveley and risk having to play Wallace for a few games with suspensions/injuries than our current situation of having Freeman, McEveley, Harris, and not one of them being up to the task. That's the way we need to start looking at our transfers.

Sharp must surely start to look cheap compared to the cumulative cost of all the Lyle Taylors and Forte and O'Halloran loan fees.

I don't disagree with that. I just don't think we will. What we should do and what we do are often very different.
I'd love the board to prove me wrong and spend some decent transfer fees on some good young players but until they're on contracts with us I won't believe it.
I'm sorry but I have no faith in anyone above Adkins.

We cant back track now lads we if we want to stay in this division ok if we want promotion the only players we want is Brayford,Done,Sharp,Long,Adams possibles Hammond,Coutts,Edgar,Baptiste and the young uns.
Mceverly,Flynn,Basham etc can go

Rather have someone consistent who isn't absolutely abysmal half a season.
