Imagine this set up
DOF - Dooley type with a lot of contacts and footballing knowledge. A seamless link between the management and board.
Manager - Someone that knows how to prioritise signings and has an eye for the right type of player.
Can anyone say with objectivity and evidence that Dooley was that influential? I don't even know what his duties were, yet alone how to measure his input.
As far as I can tell we appointed two good managers in Bassett and Warnock and let them get on with it for more than five minutes before binning them.
Ce n'est pas sorcier, Brian.
But he was a pig.I can tell you Derek Dooley was a really genuine bloke
I've played for him when he managed Rowlinson and Kestrels in the Sunday Leagues.
True gentleman and he new his football
He obviously did a good job and was a very knowledgable connection between the manager and the muppet board members.
During his tenure as managing director and chairman he was part of a team that oversaw two promotions to the top flight and also two very stable and consistent times in the clubs history under Bassett and Warnock.
No coincidence that since he left and wasn't adequately replaced there have been some awful decisions made at board room level.
The perfect guy to do a Dooley esq job would be Warnock. And that's not a 'Bladey' reason as some would say. We need someone with tremendous experience in the game, someone who knows what it's like to operate on a smaller budget, someone who has got a good eye for a player and a lot of contacts, someone who has experience of promotion and at all levels of the game and finally someone who is at the very end of his career management wise. If he's a blade and knows the expectation of our fans then that's a bonus.
The perfect candidate is Warnock.
David Holdsworth
Do you mean David Holdsworth as DoF?
Is that a possibility or just a suggesion?
Im sure we have met ,probably loads of times ,after following your posts ,we were at matches and in town in the same era.I've never met you but I've got a mental image of you and a statement like that doesn't fit.

Dooley was a pig no denying it ,there is even a restaurant called Dooleys at their place. He supported ,played and managed them. You cant change your team. His sons and grandsons are also pigs ,amongst other things.
He did an ok office job at the Lane but the statue is so wrong ,there are 100s more deserving cases.
I reckon he lost most of his alegience when they sacked him on Xmas eve but I agree with you Wendy probably was always his first.Im sure we have met ,probably loads of times ,after following your posts ,we were at matches and in town in the same era.

Don't agree with the statue hes way down the list in that department.Im sure we have met ,probably loads of times ,after following your posts ,we were at matches and in town in the same era.

I agree we need that type of person ,Warnock saw first hand what he did ,however I would put the start of our decline coinciding more with Warnock leaving than Dooley. Kenworthy says a lot of things about Dooley in his book ,lets say he wasn't his favourite person .great OP
Id not realised the time scale of our depressing run coinciding with Dooleys demise
The mans passsion was immense
This is the missing ingredient weve been lacking, the steady hand at the tiller
We need to find someone of a similar ilk a godfather figure , , we are a family club with no grandad at present doling out his experience
The main criteria for a DoF shouldn't be previous connections to the club and some sort of record as a manager.
It's more important to understand where the club is now, why it is where it is, and where it needs to go - it shouldn't take long to find these things out. Managers are generally used to short term thinking too and you don't want that in a DoF.
If you look at clubs with effective DoF/technical set ups at boardroom level you won't have heard of most of the DoF/technical directors, because they're not ex managers or even ex players in many if not most cases. The ones who are may often have a more hands on involvement in recruitment etc, the others can just ensure the scouts and management follow a process, which can make a big difference and shouldn't be hard to implement. We could surely find someone to do that.
