Nigel Adkins during Sheffield United's 0-0 draw with Blackpool

Sheffield United are expected to make a fourth approach for Fulham defender Dan Burn after the Championship club moved a step closer to signing Michael Madl from Sturm Graz.

Nigel Adkins has failed on three previous occasions to capture the centre-half with an undisclosed bid, described as a “six figure sum” by the United manager, understood to have been rejected by Craven Cottage’s board of directors last week.

But with the Football League imposing a transfer embargo on Slaviša Jokanovic’s side last month, the Serb could be forced to dispense with a player before Madl, a former Austria under-21 international, can be registered. The ruling only permits Fulham to add new names to their roster if they have 24 or less established professionals, aged 21 or older, on their books.

Dan Burn, in action against Sheffield United, remains a Blades target
Adkins, speaking after last night’s 0-0 draw with Blackpool, refused to divulge his list of targets but said: “There’s been lots going on behind the scenes. Lots of conversations. Whether we can get what we want to do across the line, we’ll have to wait and see. But that’s our focus now and we want to be busy.” There’s a domino effect, you always see it,” Adkins added. “That’s what happens everywhere.”

Burn, reportedly one of the players Jokanovic could declare surplus to requirements should Madl arrive, was on the verge of joining United earlier this season before Fulham’s failure to identify a replacement stalled the deal.

A compromise agreement, which would have seen the 23-year-old head north on emergency loan, also collapsed when Fulham suffered an injury crisis at centre-half.

United hope the fact that Burn’s contract is scheduled to expire this summer will persuade the Londoners to sell before next week’s deadline for permanent signings although Adkins, whose team were without the injured Chris Basham and Matt Done at Bloomfield Road, has hinted he could also seek to pursue another temporary arrangement should that prove an impossibility.

Why do we always leave matters to the last moment?

For sure, a transfer may hinge on other deals being made, but you would think we might occasionally be after a player who really is surplus to requirements elsewhere.

Very frustrating, as we all know we never end up with a completed shopping list.

Yup, read this in the Star earlier.

Tell you what Fatso, if we do eventually land him it's to be hopes that he's some good.

Looked ok against us, the couple of times or so that I've seen him but I don't really have an informed view of him. What do the Fulham, Brum and Yeovil supporters say about him - do you know?

If we want him enough we'll offer an amount of money Fulham see as acceptable and he'll become our player, whether they have sufficient defensive cover or not. It will certainly go someway to showing a sign of intent and backing for the manager.
Our purchasing of players always seems such a long, difficult and drawn out procedure when most other clubs get business done in a matter of days and make it look easy.

no offense but does a 4th bid seem like last minute to u mate weve made 2 bids in this transfer window alone we haven't been leaving it to the last minute weve been trying for months to get this guy

Fulham fans , on the whole, don't rate him but maybe its just at the wrong club for him. I have to admit ive only seen him a few times but he's always looked fairly solid if not very slow

That said, ive just looked and he won their man of the match award on Saturday against Hull so maybe he's improved of late. Seems strange that he has started most of Fulhams recent games yet we think we have a chance of getting him

*yawn*

again?

Are we prepared to offer £100,001 now or something?

Agreed, 4 chuffing bids over 2 transfer windows for 1 player. If this 1 is knocked back (which is likely) will we scramble in a 5th on Monday afternoon just to say how hard we kept trying or will we actually do what every single other club does and pursue other, more realistic targets?

We really are quite incompetent when it comes to transfer dealings, well inward deals anyway. We seem to have no such problems shipping decent players out.

It's funny how we never insist on bringing in a replacement for a player before we sell them.

We literally do have the most stupid, fucking nob heads around running this club

But but but remember we never plan on selling X player, it comes out of the blue..................

Shades of Dean Hammond with this, lets hope if he does come he doesn't disappoint like Hammond has.

What confuses me is about this is why a Championship player playing regularly for his club would leave to join a League 1 side. I realise he wants to move North but I'd be surprised if a Championship club doesn't come in for him given how cheap he'll cost.

Why not put this in the Dan Burn thread that already has umpteen pages?

I can probably guess why.

And yet if we made 1 bid, had it knocked back and then walked away, there would be cries from many quarters that we don't try hard enough.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

There surely has to be other cb's in the whole of the football league that could be classed as realistic targets, because at the 4th attempt it starts to smack of desperation

If there aren't any realistic targets then we need some new scouts

Gets a good write up - see below:

It is very pleasing to see Jokanovic keep faith in towering defender Dan Burn who has been an ever-present since he took over. Burn has always impressed me since making his debut under Rene Meulensteen and I believed he should have been the first name on the team sheet in recent seasons. With a run of games we are starting to see the best of the Burn. He was man of the match against Hull with his no nonsense approach to defending, Burn cleaned up on numerous times and made a number of important tackles to prevent Abel Hernandez from leading a counter attack.

He's not the messiah...

We better be careful or we'll apply god like status and be really disappointed when we see him in the talent sapping white "blades" shirt...

Hope to god I'm very, very wrong...and we sign another player with skill, drive, guts and determination, to play with Brayford and sharp... You know the other two with those qualities...

I understand that and I am not normally the type to start slating the club as soon as something doesn't come off but we have needed 2 new CBs for a long time now. Edgar was brought in fair enough but you would think there aren't any other suitable players out there. The rumour mill should always taken with a pinch of salt but twitter et al normally gets wind of things nowadays and Burn aside I don't recall hearing of a single bid being made for a defender. It just doesn't make sense continually putting all of your eggs in one basket.

It's called the Ogrady factor, remember the outcome of that, waited all summer and bought Higdon on the strength of a YouTube video...

The whole buying thing stinks of doing it on the cheap...

McCevely has been our outstanding player in a few games.

Make of this what you will. Post on BM:

"Morning all.

All doesnt seem to be lost with Dan Burn. This from a reliable source. Situation with Dan Burn is nothing but "clever business" on Fulhams part.

The deal is not dead by any means. However, it seems that Dan Burn has signed a contract to earn himself extra cash. It seems that Fulham have signed him up to generate a higher fee, but Mr Burn has been promised a "cut" of the fee for severance of the contract.

So to put it simply:-

Burn signs extra year.
Ball in Fulhams court as they can command a higher fee
Burn promised a highter % of fee Utd pay.
Everyones a winner..
Fulham are willing however to keep Burn on books if there valuation isnt met.

Its a situatiom quite similar to Wilfried Bony and Swansea. Swansea paid millions in signing on fee to Bony to sign a new contract which took out a lower buy out clause.

Believe if you like, but there you go.

I will say this though. If Utd dont get this kid and we've put our eggs in one basket, itll p1ss me off reight."

Only thing I will say on that is, everyone's a winner except us
