I go to quite a few away matches and last night went to Wigan with a mate who's a Wigan fan, his niece and my wife. Me and the missis sat with the Blades in front of another couple. It started after a few minutes when the first goal went in, a bitter and incessant barking of bile and invective targeted at, the ref (maybe he deserved it) plus, Adkins, Sharp, Baxter, Hammond from some supporters around us. The couple behind us went somewhere else.
I laughed at one of the mindless comments and one orc, eyes bulging started spattering at me. 'So this is f***g ok is it you c***........... there was no reasoning with him and then his mates started, you all get the picture by now?. My wife went to stand somewhere else, they scored a second, it was half time.

We went to stand somewhere else and it started again with some other 90 decibel obscene ranting and raving from a different set of contorted faces. Then 3-0, more venom.

Now those first 60 minutes of football were poor, we are all disappointed and some angry. I'm no prude, no angel, my Sheffield steelworks English is as as good/bad as anyone. But I was ashamed to be associated with these morons whose behaviour I'm sure is putting ordinary fans off. It was bad enough at Oldham and Walsall but last night was awful.

I don't know any other walk of life where such behaviour is tolerated, so why should mindless, pissed (presumably) nehanderthals get way with it at football matches? I feel really sorry for them, some of them my age (late 50s) whose idea of a good day out is to lose control of their anger and act like spoilt brats when we lose the ball or don't win. It not passion, its pathetic. Its certainly not helping. Its not support.

I don't think my wife will go away again this season, it wont stop me, but in future, where possible I'll be passing on seat details to the club, I don't want to put up with it.

O yes, great comeback, we won a point. Why the f**** didn't Adkins do something sooner, were f*****g shit was the final comment as we went out.

Happy Days. I'm just glad I didn't take my Aussie nieces.

Couldn't agree more. :-(

Steady Eskimo, the internet Police will be crawling all over you!

Your Lambretta by the way?

Sorry you and yours had to endure that, every club has idiots in its fan base. Dont let them put you off because it needs to be stressed that the vast majority of Blades who keep attending away games are nothing short of incredible, when you consider what has occurred for the last 6 years.

You seem to be tarring us all with the same brush, lets just get one thing straight, it's a small minority that were probably getting frustrated with all things United. There were shitloads of other seats in the stand to go and sit instead of having a little standoff with them.

You say it doesn't help but something got across to the players at some point last night;)

Sorry to hear what happen to you, but it does happen quite a lot fans will be fans especially when we are losing 3-0, it never puts me or my son going to the away matches you just get on with it. This Friday we will set off to Colchester staying over night at Stansted Hilton, then off to Colchester on Saturday the away games are so much fun compared to home games, I had my car broke into at Morecombe smashing my back window and this week will be our third away game in 7 days, we live in Blyth Northumberland which means that we will have travelled 1,260 miles which is on average 22 hours on the road and spent over £400.00 including everything. The point is if you love something , makes you happy then sometimes you have to put up with the bad side at times.

"We're fucking shit," repeated over and over again last night was a real low point in watching United.

To be fair, 'you're just as shit' after we equalised was funny :)

Yeah, the same people were standing and applauding the players off the pitch at the end, funny old game.

Everything considered, anger with United is understandable. Away fans get angry because they care. Some of them will vent that anger. You need to accept it and get on with it.

Pretty sure the club don't keep a record of any individual's away seat. Even if they did, most probably don't even end up in their allocated seat anyway. So unlucky on that one. What would you expect the club to do anyway, ban them? On what grounds?

This thread just needs a 'won't somebody please think of the children' job now.

I realise it's possible to take this all too seriously and too literally, but I thought that denigrated the achievements of the players.

We equalised because we played very well, as a team, and a manager. We should have shouting that from the roof tops - if we could get past the stewards.

I stopped going to away games a few years ago for similar reasons, and then I've gone even less since I got married, because my wife basically wouldn't want to be near the sort of chanting that goes on, let alone the vile stuff you get. As ever, the majority are decent fans, but its always the isolated few, usually in their late teens who go just to goad the opposition and hardly watch the match. The answer is as you say, just move to another part of the stand, if possible or not going at all, but that's a shame for the decent majority who behave themselves.

It's always been like that as far as I can remember. The team takes a right slagging if we're losing or it looks like we're not trying. But normally the away fans are among the best in the land when we're leading.

You should try the kop at the back. I think you'd like it.

A stewards job at any ground is to cut out obscene chants etc, but they rarely do, especially if its more than a few because they're simple outnumbered. I totally get how its frustration from fans and also that if you don't like it then don't go etc, but that doesn't make it right in my view shouting abuse at players etc isn't going to motivate them is it? I'd love to see how these individuals would get on if a few players turned up at their work place and shouted abuse at them.

Sadly this is one of the many negative effects to being in a league below where we should be, and under performing in it too boot. Still doesn't make it right though I'd much rather they get behind the lads and then at the end vent their frustration. Its like the fans who boo or sigh at a misplaced pass. Is that really going to help?!

The problem is with this argument is that if most of us don't perform we're out of the door without a second glance.

Adkins, generally speaking in his after the match interview makes reference to the excellent Blades support. I noted last night he didn't. Maybe it was the chants of 'We are shit....'

Shame really when probably the majority of fans who travelled last night did not get involved in the chant. All tarred with the same brush.

Some shocking scenes where I was sat too. Obscene language, uncontrollable ranting, objects thrown. And I didn't even go - I was sat in the living room with my wife and son listening to it on RS.
Keith Edwards has that effect, mate;)

You could be forgiven for thinking it's like going into a warzone (or even a genuinely hostile football environment) when you see comments about it putting people off going.

If people had passion for what you did and paid good money and invested a lot of time to watch you doing something you get paid incredibly well for then I think you've got to accept everything that goes with it. It's a very small price to pay ultimately. Ideally you don't want abuse etc, but it's always going to happen as long as players underperform. Those who are strong characters should actually be more motivated when criticised anyway.

I've seen plenty of heated arguments get started by the "Fuck Off To Hillsborough" brigade whenever somebody voices criticism of the team during a match. I was in one such argument at home to Rochdale a couple of months back. So it certainly works both ways.

I don't condone verbal or threatening behaviour and I would never initiate it but it's a volatile fanbase has always has been. If you put a crowd of several thousand people together in any walk of life, you're going to find some of them to be cunts unfortunately.

How dare you criticise the fans?!

It's the era of the "Nu Blade" I'm afraid. Sing shit new songs, dish out personal bile to players and act the proverbial. Happy days :(

I think we should apply the same barrage of abuse at posters on here who
don't perform to certain levels, grammar, spelling, misuse of words, cliched usernames,
posting UTB after every post, etc etc, etc.

That should see the "poor" contributors dismissed to the reserves or in forum case, WAB, where they can
realise their full potential, failing to do so would see them there forever.
If for other reasons, there's a chance of becoming a regular poster but you just need to
sharpen up a little, a loan deal to BM could be arranged?
