I don't believe it

You've hit the nail on the head re my point mate. People wanting it as a souvenir of a big game. It's a 3rd round cup draw against what's likely to be an understregnth mu side. I hate it when people quote our big club status, but have we really become this small?

But for some that's exactly what it is : a big cup game against Man Utd. The details about understrength, third round, etc are just that - details.

There are threads on here on how to spend the day, about how many tickets we've sold etc.

We usually take about 1500 - 2000 away paying about £20 each, we'll likely take more than 7000, paying ~£40 or more each, and if we sell out >8000.

And it's not a big game?

I don't think it is WHF....not for me anyway. I'd rather question why there is such a gap between us than celebrate the fact.

I've been to many "bigger", some "as big", and mainly those "smaller" but I've never seen any that way. I'm going to support my team and hope they win. The only time winning means more to me is when we play the swine herd from S6 so maybe that's the only fixture I see as a big game - and I don't see many wearing the colours of both teams there.

We're not going to agree on this one mate. We've both made our point and I appreciate yours. Would be happy to discuss further but am now off for an afternoon of fun in the hostelries of Sheffield with Mrs hby. Have a good day all.;)

Most posts on this thread seem to boil down to: I don't like it therefore no-one should like it.

No, most posts are saying that they don't understand why you would want to wear the colours of another club around your neck.
It's probably the reason why you don't see scarves made in the colour of the clubs away kit so that they are not mistaken for another team

This 3rd round tie against the mancs is a big deal and we will be close to selling out. If the tickets were priced more cheaply then we would sell the lot. This in itself proves want fans think of this game.
We will see how many tickets reach general sale - that's when 'some' glory hunters can jump on board.

You seem to be attempting to start an entirely new and unrelated argument.

Having just read this thread I can't help think this is having a knock at the club and does seem rather we ought to be billy big bollocks and now we aren't?

If you don't like them don't buy them. Plenty of kids will. I won't buy one but I am excited by the occasion and if you were to re-read the posts after the cup draw most, maybe all were excited by the draw also.

The club shop sells a load of tat I wouldn't dream of buying but plenty of folk do and seem to enjoy it. If the club makes a few quid surely that's good isn't it? A few folk on here need to chill and get over themselves with all this proper supporter stuff.

Anyway I'm just off to have a shandy, half and half, do yer get it........

Not really Pete, just picking up on the comments of this fixture being an insignificant match.
For the record I dislike the 50/50 crap as well!
The only way that this type of thing could work is if was for the club and country. I could see more selling as most (not all) would support both.
I still wouldn't buy one though.

No one has said the match was insignificant, the general point has been that we've not sunk that low as to need half and half scarves.

It's more a hatred of the scarves.

Absolutely Pete. If I've suggested that this is a pop at fans then apologies to all. I did mention "glory hunters" as that is the kind of people who I believe wear this kind of scarf and, by that term, I meant those who wouldn't normally go to many home games (let alone away) are the type of people I believe would wear half and half scarves.

Which country though?

It grieves me to say it, but we are in the age of the football tourist. There is no greater architect of this phenomenon than MUFC themselves. These so called friendship scarves are just another way to celebrate a match attended as opposed to supporting a particular team.

Without doubt the threads knocking the scarves, not the club

It grieves me to say it, but we are in the age of the football tourist.

I am a football tourist! When I visit a different part of the country I always try to find a local non-league match to go and see. And when Family HB went to Munich we took ourselves off to Augsburg. So.. guilty as charged... But I can defend myself by saying... I don't think I ever prevent the "proper" fans coming to the match. I am not one of those that would be paying over the odds to see "classic" derby matches, that's not what motivates me.

Although I suppose that's because I experience those matches and associated emotions when we play that other side, and that's enough.

Firstly, it's nothing to do with how big this game is (based on how many fans will go). I expect us to sell out our allocation of this kind of match every time. We are in the worst position, with the worst squad and the lowest crowds that we will see for this point on (I fervently hope / expect), so if we're going to sell out now, we will sell out every time in the future that we play one of the major PL teams in any FA cup round.
These scarves are "commemorative" scarves, in other words, they are to announce to the world "I was there, that day, when we beat them". If we lose they'll all get binned. If we win, people will walk around with their "statement" around their necks, probably for years - and that's the point. That's what is hated by some fans. It is saying that this game is a big moment in our history, to be remembered for posterity. On that basis, especially as this is a third round tie (I could understand it more for a final), it demeans the stature of the club. If we were playing Man U twice a season in the league, no one would dream of making a scarf like this.
Those who object are objecting to the seeming acceptance by people that this is who we are, where we are, what we've become. Perhaps they shouldn't be in denial, or perhaps they're right to object.
Despite the obvious commercial advantage of making money off them, I admit, I'm disappointed that the club have made them.

They are designed for the occasion, bought by those attending the occasion. Whether they are the football tourist, or the one big match a season type. Regular, genuine supporters don't see the point and many hate them, because they aren't there because of the occasion, they are there to support as they do regularly.

I'd never buy one, not even if it was for the FA Cup Final itself, which is an occasion I've dreamed of since first going to BDTBL. And I could understand anyone wanting a commemoration of that, even a 50/50 scarf.

Can sympathise with the tourist part to a degree...

It would be hypocritical of me to say otherwise when the S24SU home office has a collection decorating the walls from places we've been all over the world - usually pick one up only if we've been to the ground of a match there...

But a half and half is just wrong :)

I'd never get a scarf of an opposing team the Blades played either (friendly matches such as Portadown, Newry etc obviously aside).

Have modern supporters really moved so far that "the occasion" is a bigger thing than their support?
Whether my travels with United take me to Dagenham or the Bernabeu (I wish), I'm there to support my team alone, and I'd prefer not to have the oppositions colours around my neck in the process.

I can't argue with a club flogging them, after all in this day and age they'd sell dogshit if it was profitable. But it does irk me to see people wearing them. Have a bit of self-respect for fucks sake
