CLOUGH TO BURTON?

Nigel Clough has agreed in principle to return to Burton Albion as the club's manager, according to Sky sources.

Clough oversaw Burton's rise from the Northern Premier League to the top of the Conference in his decade at the club, before leaving for Derby County in 2009.

Discussions are now focussing on Clough's backroom staff, but sources are optimistic a deal can be struck, and that he will be in charge for next weekend's game at Gillingham.

Well if we can offload underperforming (or even non-performing) players, preferably for a fee, this could turn out to be good for us.

Unless they start performing.
 
All the hard work has been done for him, if he fails to get them up from there then he will be confirmed as a loser.

If he gets them up he will be open to the charge that it was really JFH's success.

Good luck to him – he probably feels there's unfinished business there given he ditched them before promotion to the Football League.

Given what we know of him, who would he legitimately be interested in picking up from us that Burton might be able to afford? Someone like Coutts for example presumably would be too pricey.
 
Speaking to a Burton fan the other day, this would come as no surprise. Clough is a well-respected figure at the club and his return would be warmly received by many of their fans.

Coutts, Freeman, Alcock, Higdon, McNulty, Scougall, McGahey, Cuvelier, Wallace J - he's welcome to the lot of them, in fact I'll drive them to Burton for him.

I doubt he'd take Cuvelier, suspect he might not think McGahey has progressed as expected. Alcock I reckon is already set to go to Donny permanently. Coutts we'd surely have to pay a chunk of wages to enable that to happen. Higgo and Wallace he'd presumably have changed his mind on based on last year. McNulty, questionable whether either party would be keen. Freeman and Scougs then? Think he'd also take Flynn if he was available too.

Just thinking through the process of what Clough might think on said players sort of highlights the problems we're going to have next month trying to move people on...
 
Not sure this is a good thing, sure we all wanted clough to get a job to come and take all our players but, can burton pay their wages?

He won't take any. It's the best two fingers he can give us.
 



I'm just glad he's not getting a job he really doesn't deserve, like Forest.

Now is your chance to prove the Sheffield United fans wrong and show that you're not stubborn or pig-headed. If you were to sign Neil Collins you would prove that you're a man of integrity and one who doesn't hold a grudge. It would show us how wrong we've been about you and make us look stupid. There's no hard feelings on our behalf, and should you take Neil away from us, the club would like to make the gesture of giving you a parting gift of £50k. Think of it as an early Christmas present and that there are no hard feelings between us.

this is going to make our 1st home league game v burton albion very tasty on 1st march

No Clough also realises they are shit so will be after, different but shit players. Also can't see Burton paying the wages.
 
It will be interesting to see how he goes about the job. A team doing well, playing attacking football and getting results. Will he keep with it or will he go about it how he did here and put his own marker down.

That's not a dig at him, the clubs he has took over before have been in trouble, now he's got a club what are exceeding any expectations.
 
They'd have to have a spectacular crash in form not to finish in the top 6, what a job JFH has done.

Can Clough get them into the top 2 at the end ? That will be tough but presumably they have a good defensive unit which he will like.

He left us with deeper problems than he is inheriting now.

JFH has done well but I think Rowett is the man who put the foundations down. I don't think JFH will do well at QPR.

Howard, Collins, McEveley, Scougal, Wallace, Coutts, Couvellier, Basham, Higdon, Sammon, and as a bonus, if you take that lot, you can have Billy Sharp as well !!

Clough will have a brief honeymoon period, then teams will suss him out. He'll revert to form and go ultra-defensive, allowing teams to come on to Burton. Clough will then revert to Plan B. With Clough there is no Plan B. No imaginative substitutions, no change of tactics. At the first sign of pressure from the opposition, he'll pull all eleven back, concede midfield and a goal for the opposition will become inevitable. He'll sign dross, suck the finances out of Burton by 'employing' half his family and his true worth as a manager will be plain for all to see.

Expect a mid-table position for Burton next May. Probably better than us, but it would still be a monumental fuck-up after JFH has done the hard graft for nearly half a season.
