Long interview 15'
  • Baxter - fitter, needs to hit good passes more consistently
  • Hammond - does unsung work connecting the team - still needs to adjust though
  • Scoogs - good going forward - sometimes we don't get him the ball in the right area
  • Coutts - need to get fitness levels up
  • Consistency of selection - a theme throughout
  • Wallace - needs to get fit (says he might never have done a full week's training - in his whole career)
  • DDG - injured, needs to get fit, then look for a loan
  • Injuries - gives nothing away
  • Been creating chances - need to be as clinical as possible
There's more than that. Worth listening to. But I always think that.

I always appreciate it when people tell me that a player does good things that I don't notice.
Obviously unless they get 2 goals, 3 assists and make 3 goal line clearances in a game- I'm oblivious to what a players contribution really is.

I stopped listening to Adkins as I find a lot of what he says irritating because most of it is rarely backed up.

Scougs for example has been extremely frustrating, runs around a lot and is hardly ever in the positions he should be.

We're 16 league games in and Adkins is saying a lot of similar things to what he said 10 games ago.

It is sounding a bit similar isn't it, on Hammond, why isn't he driving forward with the ball and making things happen like he was supposed to, don't forget he's dropped two divisions and still looks tired and plodding just passin it sideways for an easy life, how do we cop for them fuuuk knows...

Apart from Fleetwood, I've seen every game Hammond has played....Adkins is absolutely right. I haven't noticed him make a crunching tackle, nor have I noticed him play a slide rule pass, make a great covering tackle, create space for others, win his share of headers or get a shot on target. Knows his stuff does our leader. Cant wait for the adjustment.

I never listen to these supposed interviews as him, as a person, gets on my nerves.

He's full of cliches, sayings and other prepared phrases but hardly ever is there any actual substance behind them.

He's getting more and more annoying as the days go by. And that's an aside from the remarkably poor managerial performance to date.

what a fuck up Clough made with the majority of his signings.

The ability to play & complete a 90 minute game of football should have been the number 1 consideration on his mind when signing players. And now NA has to pick up the pieces.
Of those listed above Baxter, Hammond, and Diego weren't signed by clough.

Spot on regarding Adkins interviews. Still big question marks on his managerial ability at United

Who decided that driving forward making things happen was his role?

And do you really think he turns up to work wanting an easy life so he'll pass it sideways?

What a fuck up Atkins made of this summer's transfer window. Wasn't he supposed to be watching DVDs of last season's matches?

Rather than identifying areas we could all see as the major weaknesses (central defence and central midfield) his first signings were Sharp, Sammon and Woolford.

And yes, agree with Barny, Atkins' interviews are consistently dreadful. For all of Clough's faults, he interviewed really well and I always made a point of listening on audioboo.

His "we've got a calls in" became a little bit wearisome, but he was fairly cliche free. He always seemed to give proper answers to the questions and was honest, and often quite critical, when asked for his opinion on our performance.

You know he's called Adkins, right?

Hmmm....

I'm sure the chap isn't a WUM, but even if he was I agree with every word he's said.

Clough could be a twat sometimes, but he was a dour bloody minded twat, and it felt like he hurt as bad as we did.

When you watch the team completely spasm against Crewe or some other League 1 identify, I don't want to hear how we've got a team of 'hard working professionals playing in a 1-4-4-2 formation'. To be fair, it doesn't help that he's Scouse, so the accent naturally grates on the ears.

So you even notice the things you don't notice?

Things are pretty shit right now, but it's a decent interview, tbf. Covers lots of bases, & sounds in control & full of belief.

Can't complain really (well at least not till we get humiliated at home to that orange-faced bastard's bunch of fourth-division estuarine cloggers, that is...).

Cheers for the summary again WHF mate.

Of course the easy thing to do would be to have a good at Adkins because things aren't going right. On paper we are no better than how we played under Clough and since Adkins took charge at the beginning of the season, we haven't really moved forward in any way.

However.....

I'm not sure if the caller was in any way connected to this forum however I had a listen to Praise or Moan on the radio last night and a Blade made a few very decent points that I concur with and in a roundabout sort of way, regardless of where fans point the finger of blame I think that we all share a general consensus.

We have a squad that is littered with inconsistent, mediocre players and over the years we have adapted to this league by allowing our better players to leave (for whatever reason) and we haven't replaced them with the same sort of quality. Now I don't want this to escalate into a bash the board brigade because whether my opinion differ to others or not, I honestly believe that the sales of Maguire and Murphy were as they board say inevitable and our hands were tied behind our backs.

I have to hold up big question marks though when it comes to recruitment? I don't think you can question the quantity of players that have walked into Bramall Lane over the last couple of years however I think we are well within our rights to question the quality. I think we have all had the wool pulled over our eyes by a couple of cracking cup runs in all fairness as this has some what distracted us from just how inconsistently poor our squad have been in the league.

I honestly feel for Adkins because it is blatently obvious that he wants to play a certain style of football and really take the bull by the horns however he hasn't been in a position to do so since he came into the club. A massive part of me now realises that promotion this season might be a little far fetched and for the life of me I sincerely hope I am wrong and that it can be rectified in January.

Unfortunately we are now facing the transition that has been required for a few years, it should have been addressed correctly but it hasn't!

Wholesale changes are required and quality replacements sought. We don't have to mass recruit as I don't think it has come that far (nearly) but not quite.

Recruitment under the previous regime was garbage. Typically a good manager probably gets 50-60% of signings right, but under the last manager we seemed determined to sign loads of mediocre, weak-willed and or injury beset players. Christ Shaun Barker was on the cards at one point!

Roll on the summer.

Sounds about right. I think we all want it to be higher but the reality might be different. This might even be worth a thread of its own. One complicating factor is a signing like Sammon: some think he's rubbish, others (including more than one set of opposition fans) think he changes the game in our favour when he plays.

The_Green_Man it was touched on the other day that recruitment, whilst mediocre in quality, quantity was something that was a conscious decision by the Club to avoid the tired legs at the end of last season. It's baffling that it was allowed to happen because all the permanent signings were brought in on 2-3 year contracts. He'll have seen the staff list when he arrived

The injury situation though, was a little unique, but with the exception of James Wallace and Coutts, I think the rest of the signings picked up injuries once they arrived, even then it'd be surprising if alarm bells weren't rung with medical staff when Wallace and coutts arrived. Adkins has inherited a lot of injuries but again they were known when he arrived

I don't think either are really excuses, others have mentioned, we desperately needed a centre half or two, but he brought in two strikers and a winger initially.

All of the above aside, Adkins hasn't yet shown progress in 16 league games. If anything things should be improving as players come back to fitness. The only players I can say that I've been truly impressed with are Billy and Kieran Wallace, perhaps throw Baxter in there as well.

Phipps and Adkins have both claimed mitigating circumstances for the bad start, Phipps blaming Clough for much of it. It makes me wonder what Adkins did before he took the job and more so since he's arrived.

It's great that Adkins covers bases in interviews and he talks positively, but he's got to start taking some responsibility for things that haven't worked. He's talked up players and what he wants from them for 5 months now and it's not worked.

On the same token, I'd be interested to know what has worked for him. He said when Hammond came in that he was a leader and an athlete. Not on present showings he's not. Will he reassess in January and perhaps state he's not the player he was 5 years ago? Or will we sign him on a two year deal?
