Other than one season, yes that pretty much sums it up.
I'm just trawling through my memories of SUFC now.....that little shield was nice for finishing 2nd.
well imagine being a 21 year old owls fan who started watching football in 2000-01 hes never seen a prem game , or even got close to getting there
theyve grown up being told they are massive but he has no idea why
Are you saying that all that matters to you is silverware and the final position in the table? Don't you enjoy any of the actual games, ever?
I'm also interested to know whether anyone agrees that we should start thinking about next season (I'm talking about the fans, not the players and manager) and whether Adkins should and will be afforded that much time to see it through.
Thoughts?
Can't help wondering if Adkins will want to stay around for that much time to see it through if it comes to a total rebuild. I think he will have come into this job thinking he was inheriting a squad that wasn't so far off given we did finish 5th last season.
Why do my debates with you always go the same way? We always end up talking about another team or situation that bares no relevance or similarity to the original subject matter.
I agree it's terrible to be a pig supporter (achievements aside) but I can't see why you would bring that up.
Someone has already mentioned Gambler's Fallacy.was told its worth the wait by a preston fan who had sat through 9 failures
eventually its got to happen
law of averages
I want a winning team that achieves things.
Revolutionary thinking![]()
you have to be in form and have goals in the side when the play offs come round.
UTB
because you go on like weve been pants for 40 years , despite us having a decent decade doing well in the championship constantly competing
So the answer to my (2nd) question is "no"?
really , have you watched any play offs

I've seen all of Sheffield United's play off finals - have you ?
Perhaps you can tell me how many goals we've scored in these finals.
Just ignore bladetoolong, he's a wind up. He has to be.I've seen all of Sheffield United's play off finals - have you ?

He's on here purely to get under the skin of rightly disgruntled fans.
To be fair to BTL I admire his optimism and ability to look at the positives in every situation. I may present a counter view on many occasions but I'm sure I'd enjoy a beer or two and a chat with the feller - as I do with most Blades fans I meet. I just find it very very hard to feel confident and positive after 5 years in this division and what appears to be no prospect of getting out of it for at least another year.Just ignore bladetoolong, he's a wind up. He has to be.

I think Clough probably knew the capabilities of the side
preston fans took some bookies to the cleaners then
well its much better than competing in league oneConstantly competing in the Championship. The height of expectation.
To be fair I'd take that now!
One of yer posts will be right as well.![]()

My expectation level for this season is now a mid table finish. I don't expect everyone to agree with that but that's where I'm at and I've come to terms with it. I'm now thinking about how soon we can start to rebuild, moving the existing dross out and bringing proper players in.....
We have a goalkeeper, central defenders and central midfield players to replace. All key positions with quality in those areas in relatively short supply and highly priced across the 92 teams. The aim of this thread is to work out a realistic timescale to get shut of what we don't need and bring in what we do.
I'm also interested to know whether anyone agrees that we should start thinking about next season (I'm talking about the fans, not the players and manager) and whether Adkins should and will be afforded that much time to see it through.

I can't help but think he's tried to be more positive and attack minded with a team that isn't capable of going out to win games on the front foot.
I think Clough probably knew the capabilities of the side, hence tried to hold a deep defensive line and pinch games by the odd goal. In hindsight (and I didn't advocate getting rid) he probably didn't do a lot wrong.
We have to rebuild by tempting the cream of league 1 to join us, like Wolves did. It's no good getting ex premiership/championship players down into League 1, we have seen it's a different ball game in league 1, and for me, they're not up for the fight.
We have to go that extra mile and pay the going rate - not doing this is why we are where we are.
I’d argue that he did plenty wrong in failing to assemble a squad capable of going out to win games on the front foot given the advantages in terms of resources he had over most of the division. Not saying he did everything wrong but his recruitment overall was poor. One stand out signing in Adams. Brayford is obviously quality but not really a find as we paid a fortune for him (though credit to Clough for identifying him as a youngster and recruiting him at Burton). Basham was a decent freeby and Freeman/K. Wallace/Done/Harris were decent enough bits of business. McNulty and Scougall were cheap players who have looked, in the most part average. J. Wallace as gamble that backfired. Higdon and Butler were disasters. Coutts has been largely disappointing. McGahey has failed to deliver on his potential as yet. Alcock mostly disappointing. McEveley is pants. JCR hit and miss.
I was largely on the fence as to whether he should go or not but can’t agree that he didn’t get a lot wrong. He also got some things very right such as the upturn in performance he brought out of Murphy, Flynn, Maguire, Doyle, Coady etc.
