What a fantastic performance last weekend by Matthew Fitzpatrick to win the British Masters Golf tournament at the age of just 21! Although he had previously won the US Amateur Championship in 2013, this was Matthew's first professional win and with this he is ranked in the top 60 in the world. With his acceptance speech and the interviews he gave this week he seems a really level headed young man who we hope is going to do great things in his sport. I bet his family and friends in Sheffield are rightly proud of him!
With Joe Root the top batsman in world cricket (in my view) another Blade - we need those in Red & White to step up!!
Come on, lads!
Listening to Mark Roe on Sky Sports proudly announce that Matthew was a mad keen Blade - and that we were winning on Sat - I sensed he was one of us too?

Unfortunately our team is full of jocks and scousers. See another Sheffield lad, Jamie Vardy, isn't doing too badly either. Also a week when a former blade captained England with another also having a good game (Walker).

Matthew used to sit with his Dad and his Grandad every week in the South Stand but it seems he's been practicing his golf a bit instead in recent years.

Yes, he is. In the 1990s my dad did electrical work at his house and Mark is a Blade. I have seen him at matches.

I watched the 1994 British Open (2nd day) at Turnberry. I was wearing the new 1994/95 shirt. I could tell Mark was looking at my shirt when walking down the fairway at one of the holes

Unfortunately, a fan of SWFC, so there is no "warm glow" when he appears on TV, not like when you see Kell Brook or Joe Root, and you smile to yourself and think "yep, he is one of us".

Vardy was released from SWFC youth team aged 16 for not being good enough. Ended up being the first million pound non-league player I think?

The fact that they released him and he ends up playing for England and being worth millions is surely some small satisfaction.

However, didn't we basically do the same with Kevin Davies?

My mate claims he can tell if someone is a Blade or a fan of SWFC just from their appearance, mannerisms, character etc. I think he's talking bollocks.

Yes. Our youth system under Bassett was awful

I'd never really thought about it before but I can only think of Dane Whitehouse under Bassett and presumably he was already almost the finished article. However didn't Mitch Ward come through the ranks? I remember John Reed showing promise too before getting a bad injury.

I suppose this is one area that Uncle Neil did sort out.

He certainly has. He is going to be a world star. I understand his 16 year old brother plays off +4 as well and may prove to be as good as Matt. Astonishing! Well done young Blade. ❤️⚽⛳

Whitehouse and Ward were signed long before Bassett joined us. Reed was just about Bassett's success story even though he didnt play many 1st team matches

Not like you to get so excited about young players with potential....surely you should be saying, 'he has proved nothing until he is playing off scratch and has actually won something'. We can't use potential heroes for anything in Sheffield.

Wasn't he released because he was some kind of dickhead? Misbehaving or out drinking or something?

No special power really. Just go down to Morrisons at the barracks on a Thursday morning for fuel and you will spot loads of pigs a mile off! All lined up outside the job centre waiting to sign on the dotted line to relelase the funds for a top up on Lynx Ultra Plus lager.

Matt won the U.S. Amateur (a hugely prestigious tournament full of future PGA Tour players) at 19. Now aged 21, in his first season on the European Tour, he has five top 3 finishes including a win on last week's British Masters, beating Ryder Cup stars like Poulter and McDowell in the process. He's going to win a lot of tournaments and challenge on the world stage.

Joe Root is already world class and destined to be an all time great batsman. These two are heroic Blades to be proud of.

Then there's Reed, Long and Kennedy with a long hard road to get anywhere near them....

Wasn't Lee Morris signed up as a youngster when Bassett was in charge (have a vague recollection of a photo in the programme with a young Morris signing pitch side alongside dad, Colin and manager, Bassett)? And possibly Wayne Quinn was another? Admittedly both didn't make their first team debuts until Bassett had long since departed.

Apparently he is a regular up at the Hallamshire.

Golf is a sport of champions. It is a lot harder to do that riding a bloody push iron all day.

Are they many other of my fellow golfers on here?

I worked with his dad for 7 years up to 2013, just on the cusp of his rise.

Really stable background and level headed family.

His younger brother was always thought to have the greater potential ... not sure where that's at now!

Definately were all ST holders on south stand and his dad was a typical cynical blade. We had a few decent blades conversations !!

Cuffed to bits about his rise and wish I'd backed him !
