quietly getting on with it, clearing our lines, winning the headers at our end and scoring at the other. Made a mistake out wide yesterday when covering for McCevely who had left his post. Still think we would have done much better last season with him and Butler in as CB's. Lesson in manager getting bigger than club.

Personally I think he's awful, no coincidence that we've conceded so many goals

Didn't say he was a Keon but he's steady and he's scored 3 already
He was poor and our left back, and current scapegoat of choice, was left exposed more time by Collins than the reverse. Collins shows no leadership or organisational skills and just blames anyone else when he's dropped one. His distribution was nothing short of awful and he left his man on set pieces on numerous occasions. He did cry on a radio interview once though, cos it means so much to him.

Well yes he's scored goals, but he's also cost us. We conceded a soft second yesterday and it's good a defender stepped up and put us back in front.

Collins did something amazing on the halfway line yesterday too, he spun on the ball and put the ball out of play for a Rochdale throw. Brilliant.

Defenders first priority is to defend, not to piss about with the ball.

It's funny you also mention butler, have you seen where Donny are at the moment?

Agree that he's doing his job well, and with obvious passion and commitment.

(The bit about the manager got bigger than the club - can't agree with.)

Interesting. Might keep an eye on that on BP later (when you can often end up seeing the game entirely differently). First run through I saw Collins winning numerous clear and powerful headers as he often does.

When discussing Collins you have to compare with others playing at the same level. I'm not sure he's out of place in league 1.
If you want to watch top quality players then I'm afraid you need to watch football at a higher level. I think our midfield and keeper are more to blame. It's too easy for teams to run straight through our midfield giving the defence no help.

he was at fault for their 2nd by dropping deeper and deeper and couldn't get across.. Has a head like a sheriff's badge and spoon feet. Blames everyone else for his own mistakes. He's a fucking liability, but it's ok he cried one time so people give him a pass. McEverley's confidence is shot, and nothing goes right for him, even throwings but I think Collins is thick skinned or doesn't care as much as he says he does. How people have him as playing well yesterday is really beyond me. Even Baxter gets raved about for his one pass, when for most of the game he was awful. Apart from maybe the last 15 minutes.

Have we become so meh about being in this division that Collins gets a free pass.

I'd rather have Collins name on the team sheet rather than any other CB that we have at the club at the moment, maybe a sad but true reflection where we currently sit, Edgar's form gone right off, no one has confidence in Mac, Basham s role clearly in midfield , Alcock(as tried last season) the worst we have had in that position and Brayfords not a CB.
We need to find a Stancliffe, Gayle, Morgan type, true leaders hard and committed.Maguire wasn't the finished article but his departure left us in a bad place.
I like the look of Kennedy, but missing too many games due to chronic injury.
We will score plenty of goals but will ship almost as many unless we find that talisman.
I believe we will bring in a couple of signings soon and get automatic, only because looking at the teams above they are poor.

He was heading when they were free headers, Basham was winning everything in the first half and McGahey in the 2nd when they had to be competed for.

I s'pose the short answer to that is yes :)

He is good enough for what we need, so long as the midfields stands up, like when Basham is in there

First half yesterday reminded me of Clough, making do at the back by pushing Basham back there

And scrappy midgetry in midfield

Last Seasons flaws are still there, even tho' Clough aint

I did wonder. Still, in many ways it's an improvement on last season when no-one won any headers at all

Another thing to keep an eye out for on BP.

Important header to win the game but his distribution was awful yesterday. We need to land his successor and then he can provide squad cover for the rest of the season.

Unbelievable. If J Mc had made as many errors as in Collins yesterday this forum would have gone to overload.
What was that about offering an option for J Mc to throw back towards our own corner where there attacker clearly had him covered everytime. If anyof those throws went wrong the attacker had a massive clear advantage over Collins.
He quite simply should have gone more central.
Yes he will get goals but the cost will mostly be higher. However we have to put up with the situation.

Spot on. No one near him and he's fine. Gets support because of the Clough factor last season. The bench are constantly shouting for him to get out quickly. Plus his distribution is poor even for a lump of a CB.

Yes, he scored the winner but missed an easier one in the first half when he headed miles over !
Defensively, he is a liability yet still he bollocks everyone and anyone whenever he makes a mistake !

I must admit I think he's atrocious. Was easily worse than McEveley in the first half yesterday. And McGahey didn't look any worse in the second.

He's the pick of a bad bunch at the minute, but maybe after donkeys years here and being one of the signings along with Doyle that heralded the demise of the club to league one mediocrity he's now just good enough to divide opinion as a seasoned league one defender..

Was it Adams who signed them, it's so long ago, what I haven't forgot is the reaction of pretty much everyone at the lane when they first took to the pitch, not one unitedite I know rated either of them..

We need to buy quality, we need to go up with a team capable of staying up as well, we need to spend well, look what happens when you don't..

Collins biggest issue that Clough sussed out (problem was he did not replace him with anything better - maybe worse) is that he continually moves back and will not trust himself to keep a high line. As he dashes back so do all the rest and we invite pressure. It happened a lot yesterday and I notice it a lot with Collins. Even though he lacks pace he needs to move the defence out 5-10 yards more than it is. Them being right on top of the keeper adds to the confusion and pressure. Collins it not only one who does this but when he plays it is so much more noticeable.

The fact that Collins and Edgar are our current regular cb's is a sad endictment of where we are as a solid back 4 at the moment and if it is allowed to continue will surely cost us big time come the end of the season

Furthermore, it seems currently that we are more likely to concede goals on a regular basis, rather than score more than the opposition at the other end

What mistakes did Collins make yesterday? Genuine question as I tend to see the towering (free) headers and extrapolate from that that it was a commanding performance.

Several early misplaced passes. One of which we were really lucky to get away with. Check it out on Blades player.
Oh just imagine if that had been J Mc.

He is what he is. A limited but experienced centre half who can head and kick. He made a very good interception to set us on our way to the 2nd goal. He scored a goal and often looks a threat from set pieces (misses more than he should though). At the same time, so many times when he tried to play out from the back his distribution was awful. He's slow and lacks agility so any nimble player running at him gives him problems. Pretty much a bog standard league 1 centre half.

Didn't he play a fantastic diagonal ball in for Billy against Bury?
He does things like that so often, you can refer to one singular instance around 8 games ago!

I don't know whether that was Edgar, or was it against Colchester? The one over the top for Billy which he should have put away.

Watched the whole thing again yesterday. His defending 1v1 is absolutely fine afaics.

His distribution is poor but he's hardly alone in that.

The little bit of footwork on the touchline - I didn't think that should've been a throw in at the time and BP didn't make me change my mind.

He puts in a good interception before our second, and scores our third.

Unless someone can point out a series of hideous errors I've missed it looked like a good performance.

Edgar's form gone right off

I heard he came back from the international break with a niggling injury, though that said he's played in about 5 games since then before being taken off at Port Vale. Canada have another competitive match on 14th November, hope he's fit for that ;)
