57 years ago today 1958. Sheffield United v Brazil....well maybe not but that's what it said on the ticket.

There was quite a bit of excitement when Bela Vista rolled into town, after all Brazil had just the World Cup, heralded as one of the leading Brazilian sides by a enterprising brazilian businessman, they played 16 games in continental Europe which included an opening tour defeat to Real madrid 2-1.

They weren't particularly successful and won only 2 out of 16 games. Things started to recede further when they came to the UK for a further 6 games, perhaps they were tired as they lost heavily to Birmingham, 5-0 and although they managed to score against Newcastle lost 12-1.

United went easy on them and won 4-0, by all accounts they were dreadful, and Middlesbrough recorded the same scoreline.

The Brazilian FA were embarrassed and tried to have them deported, but not before they'd lost 8-0 to Luton.

They arrived home to a firework street parade and celebrations. These Latin types eh!

Does anybody have any old photos Shoreham street or old photos of Bramall lane? I'm looking for old photos from the 70s,80s so I can use them as guide lines for a artist to do a amazing painting of it
Thanks

I remember being at that game at St Andrews against Birmingham in October 1975. (referred to above). Len Badger had an absolute nightmare and when he got sent off I thought that may well be his last appearance. Not sure how often he played for us after that Brum game but I note from Wikipedia he only made 17 league appearances that season.

Just as we saw the end of the Coldwell, G. Shaw, Richardson, J. Shaw, Summers defence in the previous decade was this the start of the demise of the brilliant Badger, Hemsley, Colquhoun, Flynn back four?

50 years ago, October 9th 1965.

Northampton's only season in the top tier of english football, 1965 represented the pinnacle of their history at the beginning of the decade they were in the 4th division by the the beginning of the 70s they were back where they started. Small pocket sized programme. The game ended 1-0 to United with Ken Mallender getting the goal.

Great photos. Work on the Bramall Lane Stand didnt start until after the Blades v Northampton match on January 1st 1966. Not sure how long after

I've got 1965 but I may be wrong. However, while I was looking for it, I came across this in Wikipedia:

Sheffield United play at Bramall Lane, near the centre of Sheffield. Bramall Lane is the oldest major league ground anywhere in the world, having hosted its first game in 1862,[13] a match between Hallam and Sheffield Club. Bramall Lane also hosted the world's first ever floodlit football match on 14 October 1878 with two teams picked from the Sheffield Football Association. The power for the lights was provided by two generators. The crowd was 20,000 and the score 2–0. It was originally a cricket ground and the first important match played here was between Yorkshire and Sussex in 1855. A cricket club was formed in 1854 named Sheffield United Cricket Club and Bramall Lane was leased to the club by the Duke of Norfolk. The ground was opened with a cricket match on 30 April 1855. Yorkshire County Cricket Club also formed here, and played most of their games in Sheffield at Bramall Lane until the last match on 7 August 1973 against their old rivals, Lancashire.

The ground has seen expansion in recent years, and by 2006, on completion of a 3,000 seat corner stand,[14] was an all-seater stadium holding 32,609.[15] In March 2009 the club were officially granted permission to expand the stadium once again, over two phases. The first phase would have seen the Kop being extended to increase the grounds capacity up to approximately 37,000. It would also have seen the removal of the main supporting pillars and a giant screen installed as part of the stands roof. The second phase would have seen the Valad Stand (formerly Arnold Laver Stand) also extended, bringing the total capacity to a 40,000 all seater. The expansion would also have had a secondary focus of being available for selection for FIFA World Cup matches in 2018 or 2022, if England's bid were to be successful. However, on 16 December 2009 The Football Association announced that should England's 2018/2022 World Cup bid be successful then any games played in Sheffield would be staged at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough Stadium. Following this Sheffield United's Chief Executive, Trevor Birch, made it known that all planned ground redevelopment had been put on hold until the club was able to regain and maintain Premiership status. With the club's relegation to League One in May 2011 any ground redevelopment would look unlikely in the near future.

I always suspected this, but didn't know it was a fait accompli.

October 10th 1970, Birmingham 0 Blades 1 (Tudor)

My second league away match (since my first away match at Leicester in March 1970 I went to Gerry Young's testimonial, the friendly at Rotherham and the Watney Cup semi final at Derby) . My first time travelling in the Train Special. After the match arriving at the Birmingham train station there was a bit of commotion and laughter when word came round that Wendy lost 5-1 at home to Luton (Malcolm MacDonald got a hat-trick and Don Givens a brace)

The goal in the video below (thanks to MobileBlade ) is one of my favourites. A Len Badger throw-in to Frank Barlow who looked up and hit a good ball for TC to flick his header on to John Tudor who timed his run and hit the ball perfectly. Love how he celebrated. Highlights of the match was shown on Match of the Day (we appeared in Match of the Day only once or twice per season between 1965 and 1971) and at that time at the end of the Match of the Day programme they would show "the goal of the day" and have the celebration in slow motion with the rolling credits being added on. That night, at the end of the programme, they chose Tudor's goal and his celebration in slow motion. It was a proud feeling for any Blade fan with millions of viewers watching it

12 October 1974 Blades 2 (Dearden, Woodward) Everton 2 (Lyons, Buckley)

Start from 46 mins 27 seconds in the below video

30th October 1971. Video by MobileBlade

Great memories of this match. I'd won a football competition in the old (Sheffield) Morning Telegraph and the prize was tickets in the old John Street stand for this game.

We were sat right behind TC as he hit that shot and saw it fly in beyond Ray Clemence.

Bill Shankly was sat just behind us and pretty sure I saw him thinking in his usual way 'My God what a player....'

(The following home match (Coventry?) there's a photo of TC's goal and I can see exactly where we were sat. I've tried to make that picture clearer but been told that even modern technology cannot make the background of the photo any clearer)

13th November 1971. Blades 2 (Woodward 2) Coventry 0

GOAL - v Coventry (h) 13.11.71. In the 44th minute United broke the ice with Woodward scoring direct from a left flank corner kick. Woodward's inswinger completely fooled Glazier and his colleagues.

Woody had his penalty saved by Bill Glazier at the Kop End, I think this happened before he scored his second goal

GOAL - v Coventry (h) 13.11.71. Currie and Scullion did the groundwork, Woodward chesting the ball into the penalty area before hammering an unstoppable drive past Glazier.

That photo of Woody - is that one if the Harris brothers? Ron or Allan. Not sure if either played for Coventry. Players are wearing black arm bands. Any idea why Silent?

Enjoy this thread. It transports us (for a few seconds) to better times.

Cant remember the reason for the black armbands. The Coventry player on the left is Scotsman Roy Barry (later played for Hibs) and Bobby Parker (fair hair) is on the right. Bobby played for Carlisle in their only season in the top division (1974-75)

17th November 1973. Blades 3 (Flynn, Woodward, Colquhoun) Derby 0. A comfortable win against a team that were League Champions 18 months earlier and 18 months later too. Match kicked off at 2pm because of the power cuts

Wow, the power cuts. Oddly enough, as a kid I looked forward to the power cuts - it meant we could put candles on for lighting and it was all spooky!

There may well be an error, but my point is that all the official records are going to continue to have Field as the scorer whatever you or I might say.. I suspect that the goal was something like Field shooting and the ball taking a serious deflection off Keeley and it thus being a matter of interpretation as to who the correct scorer is. In those days, there was no official designation of scorers and who is ultimately recorded as the scorer is a matter of whose interpretation prevails. The Field interpretation prevails in this case.
Went to the Library last Friday, here is the report of that goal on Morning Telegraph in the next day

"But Newcastle's shaky defence which conceded eight goals in their previous three outings soon cracked again in the 17th minute- but it was a lucky goal for United. They got into a tangle trying to clear a United attack and the ball broke for tiny Tony Field, whose shot was deflected by Keeley, to go curling past an astonished McFaul"

Not long after that, Keeley scored Newcatle's goal to make the score 2-1 to us (Cammack scored our first after 73 seconds)

However in the Morning Telegraph's classified scores and scorers on the same page, it credited the goal to Field. It looks like that SUFC decided that it was an own goal and Field's goal tally for that season is one less in the 1974-75 programmes than in Clareborough's record books

One or two, have been in touch to ask if I would resurrect this thread for the rest of the season, if only to cheer us up.

Well can't promise that it will always be happy memories, but that's part of being a Blade I suppose. so here goes:

as usual feel free to add anything,

today February 22nd, the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Good
19 years ago: Sheffield united 3-0 Grimsby Town. No doubt a few aero-planes were seen on park pitches the following day as Fjortofft grabs a hat-trick

The Bad: 11 years ago: Plymouth 3-0 Sheffield United: Kenny got injured and Jags goes in goal. Miserable Tuesday night in Devon, especially if you had to kip in a tent on a roundabout, Greenwich Blade's finest hour.

And the Ugly: 38 years ago: 1978. Villa Reserves 10 United Reserves. I blame our Number 5. :tumbleweed:
