The massive advancements made in the application of sports science to football have lead to modern footballers being finely tuned athletes and an understanding of the need to allow sufficient recovery time between games to permit continued performance at peak conditioning.
When people refer to players being 'tired' it's just shorthand for not recovering enough to perform at optimum levels. It's a shame people still don't understand this.

Also happens in cricket. Though there the message is beginning to seep through, and there's a growing acceptance of players resting. (Perhaps aided by the high profile cases of depression - though I wonder if these are strictly related.)
I do think some of this is about communication. If those point about sports science and optimum performance levels were more widely discussed then I think this conversation/criticism might not arise.
