for Bury, hopefully we can sign a good referee in time for Tuesday, why didn't we sign a good referee in the transfer window? Did we try to get a good referee in on deadline day? How much do good referees cost these days?

I don't know his name but Bury brought on some big lump for the lad who got injured in the first half. He had an interminable talking-to from the ref shortly after he came on, but he still got to clump our players twice more before eventually being booked.

Strange ref that one.

To be fair they had a team of excellent referees did Bury.
Almost all of their players were aggressively in the face of the ref at and after every decision, giving him loads of gyp.
Particularly good at reffing were 5, 11, and 27.
They were so lucky they only got the 5 yellow cards, all were bad fouls and every time we got the ball they fouled us.
We have no one except McEv, Sharp and Howard.
We are a right set of wimps

Agreed. That's what worries me. This side lacks the 'character' / 'characters' to get promotion. I saw the thread about Barton a few weeks ago and cant abide the man in many ways but we need a player of that type. Someone who will grab the side by the scruff of the neck and drive them on. They are all so timid and weak for me.

He was absolutely useless, although I don't think our penalty should have been a penalty, it looked to me like it was outside the area.

Conversely there was one in the first half that started outside the area and ended up in the area when the foul was finished that he gave outside the area...

I thought he wouldn't give our penalty, it seemed to start outside the box. It felt like our luck turned with that one. Otherwise it was one of those shitty games - 9 yellows, most of them justified but the ref still seemed quite pernickety (for want of a gayer word) and yet inconsistent. We never got any momentum but I'd say that was more down to a classic away performance.

Can someone enlighten me to the Clarke/Sharp incident? I was ballwatching at first but it then looked like he had Billy by the throat.

Yeah, I thought so too (& was pretty amazed he gave it).

Generally speaking, he took refereeing incompetence to a whole new level. The guy had totally lost the plot by about the half-hour mark & couldn't really cope from then on in.

From my seat (centre of Kop. near the back) it looked in the area. And was reported as such on Sky (according to Mrs HMB).

OG has not scored for us for a while.

Dare say the ref (ahem) had soares up his arse

surely the only reason he didn`t send that get off.

My dad would have said of the ref; "He was strutting around like a little bantam cock."

The ref was also very dramatic with his sweeping gestures to signify a free-kick or a corner. Despite his cosmetic shows of confidence he was hopelessly out of his depth.

Talking of which, when Clarke was grabbing whoever it was by the throat it reminded me of that scene in A Clockwork Orange when Alex is being dunked in the water trough by Dim and Georgie; whenever he tried to come up for air he was pushed back down again and again.

It was right in front of me. Clarke dragged Freeman to the ground and started punching him on the ground for no reason and then Billy just came charging up and tried to get himself sent off. Clarke along with Soares and at least one other should have been sent off.

Between the ref, the fourth official and the linesman; they all managed to miss several red card offences when Clarke was ramming Basham's head into the turf.

Their useless number 40 committed at least four bookable offences, also.

One thing I noticed which annoyed me was the ref getting his hand signal mixed up. He used the wrong signals for 'advantage' and 'play on'.

I hope the assessor took a dim view of his performance. He was absolutely useless and unable to cope with this L1 game.

No doubt they had a drink and a good laugh about him being man of the match. Hope we never see this cock again.

It wasn't why we lost but dear me standards have to be higher than that surely ?

Totally agree mate, and i'm the same as you in that we shouldn't blame the ref for our loss and we should look more at where we can improve but when you look at it from another angle, as in him sending their bloke off in the first half, meaning he has a grip on the game, leading them to making less crude/rash challenges otherwise more red cards, we can then get a grip of the game and really control it.

So, in reality, you can put part of the blame onto the ref, he is part of the game afterall and at times can have more of a say than any player on the pitch when you think about it.
