Pre match view from Bury

Can only see a home win for this one. We must have far too much for Bury even when taking into account their very impressive away record.
6 points from the next 2 matches would do very nicely indeed.

Gone are the days of failing to break down stubborn teams ☺

Bury always makes me think of Len fairclough ,he was sat just along from me at Gigg Lane in 1982 on the way to div 4 promotion. It was a night match and we drew I think ,they were doing well as I remember.

They seem like a reasonable bunch.

It's the sort of game where a routine home win is required to be serious about automatic promotion. There will be plenty of those and we can't afford to drop many points in them.

I can't really remember any games against Bury at the lane, but I do remember watching one at Gigg Lane on the telly. I distinctly recall Tracey catching the ball cleanly in both hands and being bundled over the line for Bury to be given a goal. My memory is telling me it was a certain Laurent D'Jaffo that did the bundling and the game finished 3-3. My memory may be wrong!

I remember us losing at Bury in the League cup in Bassett's last days at the club. The radio summariser (was it Edwards back then?) said it was as bad a performance as he'd ever seen. It's amazing how often I've heard that said. :)

The obligatory Bramhall Lane puts in an appearance

I like this little snippet

“1925 was the last time we won there. The season after that we beat them 7-4 at Gigg.”

90 years ago. What could possibly go wrong?

'Bramhall Lane'

Boy does that make my piss fizz. Almost as bad as 'Sheffield'.

Four minutes to go we are trailing 1-0
Jeff King collects the ball to the right of the area and takes on his man
He does a trick or two and drives to the by-line where he creates enough space to stand up a cross that the keeper has no chance of collecting
In comes Edwards, whose read the situation perfectly, already lost his marker and he powers the header in for the equaliser.
Cue pandemonium as the travelling faithful in red and white (some in yellow) at Gigg Lane go absolutely mental.

Memries :)

(cue Darren to piss on my parade and tell me it was yet another figment of a misguided set of disorganised brain synapses)

I remember going to bury for a night match, (believe it was the league cup) with Bassett in charge.
We were bloody awful in the first half. The players went in for half time and within a minute they were back out to stand around like spare parts until the ref and other team came out some ten minutes later. Bassett had given em a right bollocking.

I believe it was in the days of Andy Barnsley and who was the right back, bloody awful player worst I gave ever seen in a parks team let alone sufc.

Yeah, I watched it in a pub in Nottingham with a mate, who described it as 'the worst 3-3 draw he'd ever seen' - which was a pretty fair description. There was no quality from either side, and the goals game about largely as a result of defensive errors or (in the case of D'Jaffo's goal) poor refereeing. My clearest memory was of D'Jaffo's bemused shrug when the goal was given - "how the hell did I get away with that?!"

I like Gigg Lane, it has a proper old fshioned football feel to it. I was sat in one of the home stands that night, I was working very close by at the time. As somebody else says, we sneaked a 1-1 draw with a last minute Edwards equaliser. I think that goal may have been significant also for the fact that it put Keith one goal ahead of Craig Madden, the Bury striker and Sir Keith won the Golden Boot award, with 36 to Madden's 35.

Darren? Who needs him :-)

They haven't won at the Lane in their last 23 league games: this is the joint worst record with Portsmouth.

They've also gone winless in 4 Cup ties in this period.

They last beat us in the league in 1952. We are unbeaten in 20 games, our longest run against anyone. Oddly, they have beaten us 4 times in the league cup at Gigg Lane during that period.

I was also at that match at Bury in the old 4th division (27th April, 1982). When Edwards equalised, I thought the Blades were going to destroy that old wooden stand!

Where on earth did Erik Tonne go?! Showed a bit of promise, didn't he?

14 away games undefeated!!!

This is not a foregone conclusion!

Only 3 in League One though.

Must admit their last result, beating Walsall away from home, was quite the coupon buster. Fair play to them.
It certainly wont be easy.

ERIK TONNE!!! I REMEMBER HIM
Wonder what he's up to now?

EDIT:
To answer my own question, he's playing in the Norweigan top divison for Bodo/Glimt, a side who's fans famously take big yellow toothbrushes to away games... erm okay.
Seems to have done pretty well for himself. As does Ayhmen Tahar who also left us at a tender age, was playing european football this summer.

It's a shame neither of them made it as they showed a lot of glimpses with us.

Couldn't agree more, I think that this will be the first real test for the Mr Adkins "Respect Campaign".

At one time this was exactly the kind of fixture that we would lose or dig out a turgid 0 - 0 draw. I think the Bury result, and the manner in which it is achieved, will be a good indicator as to whether we are on track to make the step up from League 1 play-off to automatic promotion contenders. I think that the crowd will play a big part.
