Didn’t the Hecky promotion season dispel the myth that you need to exit the cups as early as possible if you want to get promoted?

We have an outside chance of the play offs at best. A good cup run gives the fans something to get excited about, puts money in the coffers and gives game time to fringe players.

I’m going on Sunday, hopefully Wilder has them up for it but given past experience I won’t hold my breath.

First!

“I guess there will be 25000 in , they are well supported”

Not a cat in hell’s chance of that. 12,000 will be pushing it. The Kop will probably not be open.
I agree. If that number turn up it will be chaotic.

That’s more like it! Some good comments there. A little bit of credit, a little spice, a little bit clueless and some confidence. It’s refreshing to see after the last couple of months in the league with shite views from

For me the comment below sums this one up, the gap between our 1st X1 and theirs is huge, but if we play a mix then they have every chance.
“Really difficult to predict this one but my head says if Utd put out a strong side we will be out.”

Clough harshly sacked? His plans revolved around signing Shaun Barker. A quick check shows he played 0 games 2012-13 season, 2013-14 season and 2014-15 season. He played 6 more games over the next two seasons for Burton before retiring.

The Burton manager that signed him? I'm glad you asked. It was Clough.

I have very fond memories of Cloughs time as manager.

He did really well with limited funds (ok he signed a couple of dodgy ones)
but mostly good.

An unbeaten league run and some incredible Cup games along the way.

Forest, Charlton, Villa away all were amazing topped off by Wembley and that famous crowd ovation from Blades that went around the stadium.

Never experienced the like before or since.

It’s £2 for my 15 year old; 10p more than a pack of digestives! Plus, according to Chris, no chance of Shackleton playing. Lots of tickets sold since his presser today, coincidence? I think not.

Hahahaha blunts, never been called that before. Pity it’s not at theirs as I could dig out my flares and be fashionable again.

Chesterfields poor cousin, let’s hope we take this at least semi seriously.

Thank you Roy

Good comments.

"We've got nothing to play for" - check the table fella

"Jamie Shackleton could do with a bit of game time. We could provide that" - I'll drive him there myself, even from Australia.
If they think Jamie Shackleton could do a job for them then their standards are as low as a 60 year old bird in the Bessemer on a Friday night

“Could easily have more away fans than home.”

Are they on crack? Mansfield is basically an industrial estate.

To be fair at a tenner a pop they might, especially as they might have a chance of winning.

To us it is (sadly) a game that gets in the way. To them it’s their big day out and they can have a wankathon with the pigs about it

"Nice opportunity to visit the 2nd oldest ground in the football league"

Haha quite. And of course, they have to hand this title over to us whenever they get relegated too many times!

On our preview with the opposition view, their fan has said that during their previous league game against Bradford City, Mansfield Town started 9 fit players and 2 riddled with injuries with nowt really to come off the bench. Not sure if the week+ (their League 1 game on the 4th was postponed same as ours) has done anything for their injury crisis, but they seem to be in dire straits as far as having fit players is concerned.

Clough was a false dawn. He did well when expectations were low and we were desperate for results. He got the best out of a talented bunch of players with a rigid defensive shape nicking results on the break. In the second season, when he was tasked with recruiting his own players, despite him saying publicly he wanted a few top quality players, he lost the plot and signed a load of dross on shortish term deals (two years). He didn't change the style of play to something more assertive and was never going to trouble top two with that approach. He essentially signed his own death warrant. It took until the Wilder league one season to move on all the dross he'd accumulated. The irony was that that approach suited the cups.

Was quite interesting listening to Wilder’s warm words for Clough today, saying it was a “mind blowing” decision to sack him, given how many of his players Wilder needed to move on when he took over.

Tad harsh, he never set the world alight, deserved to be sacked in the end, but he was a rare uptick amongst the dross served up between Warnock and Wilder.

He also signed a lot of decent players, some of whom thrived under Wilder.

By the end of the window we’re going to have two quality players per position.

Certainly at this stage having cup games isn’t going to do any harm.

Once you start having league games cancelled it might become a challenge but let’s cross that bridge if or when we come to it!
