Honestly if I was the manager without letting on I'd be planning to get him out of the club. We may need him at some time, so we can just exile him like Collins, you have to man manage but:
  • He got into some drugs trouble at Everton (I think)
  • There was the drugs (again) over the summer
  • There was the straight red last season
Then comes this evening...

Adkins has given him a key role to play - he's almost central to his plans - and he gets himself sent off and a three game ban for a needless and even reckless challenge in a lost cause in a meaningless match, with a big game on Satdi.

It really couldn't be much worse.

I think players should be given a second chance but that was career suicide.

As someone else has said, it's Wallace's shirt to lose.

It's not really about his ability his merits and demerits on the ball, it's about his liability, his attitude.

Furthermore if the management team have, say, been planning behind the scenes to sign a CB - and others - with the Murphy money this may even affect those plans. Or maybe Adkins will just have to accommodate him till we can afford to jettison him.

One day it'll be good riddance to bad rubbish. Till then hope he doesn't implode again.

Problem is, baxter isnt the same baxter when we signed him as baxter at Oldham was a striker alongside that 6ft 8 matt smith & impressive in the fsla cup but the longer hes been at club further he gone backwards & I always thought hes a no10 or old ACM position not CM

Baxter obviously doesn't learn from past mistakes.Bollocking from Adkins and out for 3 games, at least that's a positive from last nights game(plus great support once again from Blades in the capital)
He's a liability both on and off the field, will never learn, needs offloading before window shuts !

Short term Yes, Long term No, not good enough in a middle 2 to control a game, be surprised if Adkins views it differently.

Who (apart from us) would buy a player who will miss his first 3 games?

The manager signalled that this game didn't matter with the team selected, and the Professionals understood that.

Alcock shirt tugging for a pen, the lunge from Jose, and the pull from Wallace

Each of the above showed lack of Effort, Caring about the result and Professionalism

Just what the manager ordered .....................................

Me thinks not.

My opinion is that Adkins sees Baxter as the heartbeat of the side, and that really is the only opinion that counts. We are quick to jump on a "slag him off" bandwagon though. He has made a bad, rash tackle. No one died !!

He will be going nowhere fast.

Baxter is a footballer but not an athlete unfortunately. Technically good but can't do the running needed. There are loads of players earning a wage that are the opposite, good athletes but not footballers.

I've voted yes..

I know we need a scapegoat at the minute, but were only downgrading baxter cause doyles left the club, no complaints last week were there..

However I am 50% for because hopefully one day he'll grow up and realise his quite clear potential, kick the drugs and be a star.. he's still young enough..

The other 50% wants a payday out of him if he leaves....

Too much smoke with the drugs..lol.... where there's smoke...

Heart says keep....head says offload...he looks like he's not gonna learn from his mistakes....sadly..

It's not the first time he's done it though, is it?

He was lucky with a lenient drug ban, That counts for nothing if he keeps missing three games here and there.

Sounds like a dickhead challenge on the radio when the game was already lost. Let him work his nuts off to get back in, not banish him to the phantom zone like Clough did with Brandy.

and what has Brandy done since.... shows Clough was actually correct about him...

on leaving us he signed for Rotherham, played once and was shipped out on loan to Crewe 6 months in to his contract at Rotherham he is released by mutual consent and joins Rochdale... plays 4 times and is released at the end of the season....

he is currently a free agent.... people dont want to touch him with a barge pole it seems...

As annoying an underperforming as he can be, if we are serious about getting promoted we need him. He is a class above most at this level. I would love Reed to come in and shine, but im not convinced he can yet. For me, despite the crap you get from Jose, the good outways the bad.

why do we need a player who actually only performs twice, maybe three times a season if we are lucky.....

surely playing with the equivilent (and sometimes physically playing with) 10 men for 43 league games is far more a hinderence than a benefit.....

Thing is, if Wallace grabs his spot on Satdi, Baxter may well have kicked himself out of the team anyhow...

For the duties of a central midfielder I think Wallace has a better all round game, if he can stay fit.

Neigh.......not unrelated to that high whinnying noise you sometimes hear when a scouser responds. But I digress, Baxter was stupid, proving he can't tackle, and reminding me that there's a reason why he's spent most of his career in the lower divisions. His worth to the team is a question that many of us consider, and to be perfectly honest I have my doubts about his inclusion in a team that's meant to be focussed on promotion this season. His athleticism is lacking, and as we should be thinking about improving at all times, I think that Baxter has comprehensively answered those questions surrounding what sort of midfield we should be looking to create.

Hopefully Baxter wont do anything like that again his season still think a red for Wallace after that Chablis harsh tho theres not enough contact on it to give him a straight red deffo a yellow but red was harsh on the young lad

I am sick of him stealing a wage and taking the piss out of Sheffield United. From false number 9 to false number 11.

I’ve defended Baxter in the past but am very annoyed with him over this stupid sending off (as I was in the Coventry game last season), For me, he needs to be fined and told in no uncertain terms that he might have a wait on his hands to get another chance in the first team.

We are in a bit of a bind now for Saturday as it’s a big ask to play Wallace on Tuesday and then again on Saturday. Whilst I would prefer Wallace, I can see Reed playing there (or maybe even Woolford?). If he impresses, it would be his shirt in the interim, if not, I figure Wallace would get a go in the next game. Whoever impresses the most will keep the shirt and that’s the way it should be. If neither does a good job, Jose will probably come back in after his suspension. I don’t think anybody should be guaranteed a shirt for a long run of games and players should only start games if they are earning the position.

It's well documented that I'm not a big fan of Jose ( in this Division ), however, I would have started him last night at Fulham, because his game is more suited to the PL & Championship.

Having said that, it was a badly miss-timed challenge, not for the first time, so he cannot have any defence if NA gave him a right good fu**ing bollocking.

I can't agree that we need him in order to get promoted though. Another no prisoners CH, GK, a loan LB and defensive CM are more important to us at the moment than Jose ....... I still believe that he is largely ineffective in this agricultural division that we have trapped ourselves in.

Baxter is simply NOT a central midfielder for a 4-4-2. Similiarly to Scougall, he would work in a 4-5-1 or 3-5-2 in the hole, linking the midfield and attack. But playing 4-4-2 he doesn't have the box-to-box game required for midfield or the pace/presence required to be in the front two.

Wallace and Basham together may be an improvement, but I remain unconvinced that Basham has the distributional abilitites required for the long-term. Here's hoping we sign a midfielder before the window shuts.

Yes but thats with hindsight. Clough did not seemingly push him away due to him being shit. It seemed it was because he was so pissed off with the red card. He said after the Crewe game I think it was, that Brandy had cost us the game. I am just suggesting we dont cut our noses off to spite our faces with Baxter.

I think there must have been attitude issues with Brandy. He's clearly a talented lad so for his career to be going down the toilet the way it is says something aint right there. I think Clough saw the red card as a symptom of that and bombed him out as quick as he could. After all, Doyle, Higdon, Baxter and Basham all got red cards under Clough without suffering the same fate. It's now the second time Baxter has done this for us though (like Brandy) and he's another who's attitude is the subject of scrutiny so who knows.
