Comes to the club after a bad experience at Reading:

  • Finds that most of the better players he thought he had are injured
  • His only fit quality player leaves after one game
  • The fans boo his team and abuse his players after the first game
  • Maybe realises that his definition of game changing is different to that of the Board
  • Realises he has a bunch of players who do well under no pressure but as soon as they have to perform they wilt
Poor bastard.

Why did he fail at Reading?

General view?

What is Adkins' view on it, recorded anywhere?

Imagine if we lose today.

The atmosphere will be poisonous.
Unfortunately some of the " players " have no-one to blame but the fellow in the mirror , time to man up Blades , man the fuck up , The first tackle today has to be in the vinnie jones mould , one so every Blade gets up and roars there approval, not something you like to see but something that needs to get done!!.
Cause otherwise , you could be right BB .
The atmosphere could turn very fucking nasty , hope they have enough barriers out .

A club in which decline had already set in.
New owners joining after Adkins' arrival who altered the parameters set when he joined the club.
They're a set of plastics who Nige couldn't be arsed about.

Maybe the former applies here! :)

To be serious a mo, the difficulty and challenge at SUFC is this.

Large club in too low a division
Culture of always selling, not really investing
Intense local rivalry
Large crowds
Piss poor achievement record, arguably the worst in the country by far
Getting the majority of the players to consistently over-achieve in order to get promoted.

The only manager who has ever achieved the latter is Dave Basset. In that sense he and his team were geniuses.

He's paid well so don't feel any sympathy but if he wants promotion he's got hell of a hill to climb.

Commentary on the Burnley game has pointed out that their last promotion started with one loss in the first sixteen games.

Unbeaten fifteen game run anyone?

Fair points. Just that I think Reading had already headed into decline from a historic high - the only way was down realistically, & the momentum of decline had already set in.

We're the opposite in a way, mired in a near-historic low but having bottomed out. The very great potential is encased in the very problems that you list. No guarantees with Nigel, far from it, but the personality is there (not to mention the skills) to see that potential for what it is & not be overwhelmed. There was no real potential for Reading to maintain or rise further from the position they were in IMO.

Not if it's fifteen 0-0 draws ;-)

I'd just amend that to the abuse by the fans was after about ten minutes.

Also tbf I think the board are ambitious. Why else is the Prince here?

What was the point you think we bottomed out then?

Just fourteen to go.

And a centre half, injury to either one leaves us short.
